What does the company do?

GAB manufactures and distributes beers. Brands of beers they are selling are: Guinness, Tiger,

Heineken, Anchor Smooth, Anchor Strong, Kilkenny, Anglia Shandy and Malta.

What we know about the company now that we have visited them:

GAB is the first and only brewery in Malaysia to receive the Hazard Analysis Critical Control

Point (HACCP) certification from the Ministry of Health.

The basic materials used to produce the beer are roasted barley, malt(protein), pop, yeast and

water. Product is tasted by tongue.

Apart from manufacturing and distributing beer, GAB has a foundation called GAB foundation

for corporate social responsibility purpose which focuses in environment, education and

community.

Environment- Since the beer is made up of 95% of water, GAB emphasizes the importance of

water and does environment conservation through the protection of water sources. In year 2007,

GAB launched the W.A.T.E.R Project (Working Actively Through Education & Rehabilitation)

to improve the water quality of river in Malaysia, to increase awareness on the importance of

conserving the environment. GAB started the River Rehabilitation Project by adopting the entire

2.5 km stretch of Sungei Way, which flows behind the GAB brewery. It was very dirty

previously and today, it is so clean that people can swim in the river.

Education- GAB understands that there are a lot of children who are grow up in a non-English

environment and are lack of confidence to communicate in English. Therefore, GAB launches

English class to help the children to adapt and improve their English. The children are

encouraged to speak and communicate with each other by using English only in the class.

Community- Through GABs initiative called The Big Day Out, employees throughout

Malaysia were given one day off to go out and work for charity of their choice. This activity is

planned 2 months in advance.

Moreover, we have learned that GABs packaging line can be divided into three- bottling,

canning and barrier.

Bottling (35k to 50k in an hour, 24hours a day, 5 days a week and is fully automated which 8 ppl

can manage); Canning(70k/hour); Barrier (300 barrier /hour).

Although GAB does not have own recycle system on the disposed cans and bottles, they leave

the recycle job to outsiders who do it as a living.

Our overall experience in this trip:

We have been welcomed warmly by Ivan and ____, who came from Holland. We are brought to

visit the factory to see how beers are manufactured as well as invited to have a slip of their

proudly brewed beers. It is a fun, knowledgeable, and relaxing trip and I really enjoy seeing how

the employees feel strongly connected to GAB and love their careers in GAB.
