Not all the I/O in a fieldbus system can be connectorized, but when it can it is extremely effective. A few minutes oflayout and bill-of-material planning can replace hours of costly wire installation. In addition, product replacement isgreatly facilitated by using industrial grade quick disconnect plug-and-play receptacles.

InterlinkBT uses two industrial standardized connectors. The generic names for them are “Mini” and “Micro or Euro”.In one variation or another these two standardized connectors are produced by the thousands. Rough estimates put the“Mini” style at over 10,000 per day and the “Euro” at over 25,000 per day. They are used in every industry that requiresrugged economic plug-and-play connectorization. Both were standardized by DIN (German Industrial Standards) in theirearly design. Today they are recognized standards throughout the world. The sheer volume means that the build processes for these two standards are understood, tooled, automated, and eco-nomical. The volume and breadth of applications means that broad selections of off-the-shelf products are available.

There are three materials for coupling nuts; stainless steel, nylon and nickel-plated brass. The mating pin and sleeves aregold-plated brass. The body is made of polyurethane and is injection molded to the cable jacket to provide strain reliefand to seal the connections from the atmosphere.

The Mini’s pin and sleeve are rated at 9 amps and the Micro is rated at 4 amps. The designated ground pin of the Minifamily is longer than the other pins, resulting in a make-first/break-last ground. This feature is not explicitly required forIS or NI applications, but is a sound engineering choice. All the pins of the Euro make and break at the same time duringinsertion and removal.

The junction boxes shown in this catalog are passive hubs. Although no conditioning or monitoring takes place, somejunctions have short circuit protection. This protects the power on the trunk and allows use in Class 1, Div 2 locations. The boxes are made from two different materials; copper-free die-cast aluminum with a powder coated enamel finish orpolyurethane overmold. Both housings are available with either 316 stainless steel or nickel plated brass connectors.

The junction boxes are rated NEMA 1, 3, 4, 4X, 12, 13 and IEC IP 67. These ratings are conditional, requiring thecordset or cap to be installed. Although the die cast housing is rated 4X (salt-water spray test) we highly recommend thepolyurethane or fiberglass housing for aggressive environments.

Active hub - a multiple port repeater or amplifier that lengthens the branching ability of a bus.Barrier Box - limits current/voltage to an area.Brick - fully connectorized passive junction.Bridge - there are two types; one is a double-sided node that connects two segments together that are the same protocol butdifferent transmission speeds, the other is a smart repeater that only repeats the data between two bus segments when thesource and destination address are in different segments. The bridge must be programmed to know what the addresses areand their respective segments.Bus Junction - generic name for a passive hub.Busline - any group of wires that carries data from node-to-node.Dropline - a reduced branch (spur) from a trunkline.Gateway - a special node on two different buses that serves as a signal and data translator between the buses.LAS (Link Active Scheduler) - controls comunication on the bus. Creates a token circulation list (Live List) that definesaccess on the bus. Devices may only communicate when given access by the LAS unit. Multiple devices may have LAScapabilities but only one can communicate at a time.Node - an addressable device on the bus.Power Conditioner - device used to condition the power to be for a bus segment. Allows power and data to exist on thesame wires.Repeater - a product that strengthens a signal, while adding up to a half-bit wait state and producing a fresh signal withoutdistortions. It also links two portions of the same bus together. A repeater is used when a signal is weak or distorted.Router - a higher level bridge for connection of wide area networks.Simple Device - anything that does not have LAS capabilities.System Tee - a field wireable tee.Tee - a product that creates a branch or drop from a bus.Terminating resistor - a resistor that is put at the beginning and end of the main busline to stabilize and minimize reflections.Trunk line - the main busline.

Topology is a term that applies to buses. It describes how the data lines connect the nodes together. The first bus goesback to the original telegraph - two data lines hanging on wooden poles going from telegraph station to telegraph station.

Bus - the simple straight-line topology is called a bus. Another term used is “Daisy Chain”, where the trunk simply runsfrom device to device.Branch - a common bus can have branches, and sometimes the branches can have branches. Another term used todescribe the branches is “drops” or “spurs”, as in FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus. Depending on the bus the branches may berestricted to just a few centimeters or a free-form topology with restrictions only on the cumulative distance of all datalines.Star - the bus lines radiate from a single point. A junction (either passive or active) looks like a star. FOUNDATION™Fieldbus also refers to this as a “chicken foot” topology with many branches connected in a relatively small area.

There are several different bus types utilizing the following technologies:

Client / Server - upload/download information, setpoint changes, alarm management, remote diagnostics and one to onecommunications.

Media Access - this is the “right-of-way” for talking on the bus. There are three main types:Master Control - one super node controls all transmission, sequence and time. Remaining nodes do not talk unless told to by the master.Token Passing - this is a message shift method that is incremented in a manner that allows each node a chance to talk

during each cycle.CSMA - an access method allowing each node to speak, provided that it has something to say and no other node is talking

on the line.

Message Collision Avoidance - when two people talk simultaneously there is a verbal collision. A few humans can talk andlisten to someone else at the same time but nodes cannot. Both token passing and master control do not have that problem. Afield node can only access the bus when it is its turn to talk or when it has been told to talk. CSMA-type buses do have thisproblem. The problem goes away when they are operated as a master-to-slave. When operating in the native CSMA accessmethod two nodes could start talking simultaneously. Two major ways have been developed to handle a potential collision:

CD - collision detection - all senders must also be receivers. If two nodes start talking at the same time they will hear a collision. Both stop talking, wait a random length of time, then look for a clear line to start talking again.

BA - bitwise arbitration - all senders must also be receivers. The busline must be of a specific length or less so that all nodes hear the bit at the same time (actually the first node and the last node can be approximately 1/6 bit apart).

Messaging - there are three major types in the run mode, but many more during start-up and initialization.Solicited - a response to another node or a response when it is the node’s predetermined time to speak (token passing).Unsolicited - a response to a change-of-state at the node.Explicit - a command order. It may command an output be turned “On” or “Off”. It may command any node to

report its diagnostic status or identity itself in full detail.

One last distinction must be made for the output nodes. How do they get the information so they know what to do?Although there is an overlap with the terms used for messaging, there are important differences:

Explicit Message - this is a command from another node.

Limited Peer-to-Peer - exclusive one-to-one relationship between the input node and the output node. This could also becalled exclusive peer-to-peer.

Unlimited Peer-to-Peer - similar to limited peer-to-peer, but the output node may get information from several input nodes.

Publisher / Subscriber - scheduled distribution of data to nodes on the subscriber list.

FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus OverviewFOUNDATION™ Fieldbus is a communication protocol and defined physical method to interconnect smart devices such astemperature transmitters, pressure transmitters and valve actuators. The physical layer conforms to ISA SP50.02 and IEC1158-2 standards for fieldbuses. In comparison to 4-20 mA loops that only allow for one device connection per twistedpair, fieldbus technology enables many smart devices to share one communication medium. The digital communicationsignal is superimposed onto a DC carrier. This greatly reduces the amount of terminations needed to connect all the fielddevices to a host system. It also allows greater flexibility for future additions of I/O points.

A FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus device is addressable and has capablities to store and transmit data. The devices can storevalues, track changes and use pre-set alarms to trigger. Based on pre-defined tag names, host systems can read transmit-ter values such as temperature and pressure or set values of a valve actuator.

The digital signal encoding is done using Manchester BiPhase-L and error checking is done with the CRC method.FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus has two types of devices; a Basic Device (BD) and a Link Active Scheduler (LAS). A BasicDevice is designed to read inputs, track values and set outputs if programmed to do so. A LAS device performs the samefeatures as a BD, however it goes one step further by handling network communication timing between all the activedevices on the network. The LAS essentially creates a time table so that all devices can get a chance to transmit/receivedata on the bandwidth. A fieldbus segment can have many Basic Devices but must have at least one Link Active Sched-uler. At least two LAS devices are recommended on the network to provide redundancy. If there is more than one LASon the network, the one that powers-up first gets the LAS designation and the other LAS unit switches to BD mode ofoperation.

In essence, all devices on a fieldbus segment are connected in parallel. All transmitters connected to the fieldbus segmentlisten to all communication signals, however the protocol determines the rules as to which devices respond to the messages. For the purpose of this guide only the physical layout will be discussed in detail. The general layout is either a Star (chickenfoot) or Daisy Chain.

General Layout Topologies

Communcation SignalThe FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus H1 communication signal is a square waveform superimposed on a DC carrier. Thefrequency of the signal is 31.25Khz. Although they do not have to, most devices derive their supply power from thefieldbus communications cable. The fieldbus specification states that devices must not be polarity sensitive. It is goodelectrical practice though to have all devices wired with the same polarities. The voltage range allowed for properoperation is 9-32 VDC. A typical fieldbus device will consume 20 mA of current.

Star Topology MethodA Star topology has a central connection point for all terminations. This layout works well when there are many devices ina localized area. For instance, the control room may be located about 300 meters away from a cracker tower. This towermay have five or six temperature transmitters. All of these devices need to be connected to the fieldbus segment. The bestdesign would be to connect them all to a junction brick and then run a Home Run cable from the junction brick back to thecontrol room. See Figure 2 for a pictorial example.

The Home Run cable is considered the main trunk line for communication. Each device that is connected to the junctionbrick is called a spur. In other industrial networks spurs are called drops off the trunk line.

Figure 2 - Star Topology Example

Daisy Chain ConfigurationIn a Daisy Chain configuration each device would require a tee so that the Home Run cable would be able to go to eachdevice. From a design standpoint, the Daisy Chain method is easiest to do when the exact cable tracks are known. Pre-made cordsets can then be purchased, making the network easy to assemble. See Figure 3 for an example drawing. Afieldbus transmitter is connected to each of the tanks in the field. The Home Run cable essentially is routed to eachdevice in series.

In many fieldbus installations it makes sense to mix both Star and Daisy Chain topology layouts. The key to the wiringdesign is to make layouts valid per the fieldbus specifications. One of the benefits to fieldbus is reduced wiring ofdevices, leading to faster start-up times.

Fieldbus Cable SpecificationsThe specifications for fieldbus H1 physical media are defined by IEC 1158-2 and the ISA-S50.02 Part 2 Physical LayerStandards. The same standard is also listed in the FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus specifications under 31.25 Kbps Physical LayerProfile FF-816-1.4. There are essentially four types of cable designations for Fieldbus. Type A cable is the most preferredfor new installations because it allows for the most versatile lengths. The other types of cable are for installations wherecable already exists from 4-20 mA systems. See Table 1.

This surge suppressor protects the data communication lines (V+ and V-) rather than just the shield. The unique multi-stage design provides superior surge protection. The surge suppressor absorbs thefront end of the transient, responding in less than a nanosecond, then diverts the surge energy toground. Once the surge has been dissipated the suppressor automatically resets and waits for thenext surge.

The minifast® connectors provide IEC IP67 protection in the rugged polyurethane overmoldedbody. The surge suppressor is available with stainless steel coupling nuts and a ground stud.

The Power Supply Conditioner meets the needs of redundant power supplies for FOUNDATION™Fieldbus. This product has primary and secondary power inputs to supply two Fieldbus H1segments. Standard 24VDC power feeds into supplies A and B. It also takes care of filtering thefieldbus signal from the power source. LED’s indicate which Power Supply is primary andsecondary. Diagnostics provide the status of each power supply, indicating either READY orACTIVE. The status is also provided through relay outputs for further monitoring. Internalswitches turn on/off terminators per segment.

Supply “A” is Primary. If Supply “A” Voltage drops below 11 V, Supply “B”becomes ActiveSupply “A” becomes Active once Voltage >11V

PROFIBUS®-PAPROFIBUS®-PA (Process Automation) uses synchronous transfer mode technology, as defined in IEC 61158-2, tocommunicate between field devices and the RS 485 backbone of PROFIBUS®-DP. A segment coupler, or gateway isinstalled to bridge PROFIBUS®-DP with PROFIBUS®-PA. Otherwise, the protocols are identical, allowing transparentcommunication between general purpose automation systems and decentralized field devices.

PROFIBUS®-PA is a master-slave bus. Transmitters used in the process industry are typically slave devices or passivestations which only communicate at the request of the master.

General Layout TopologiesThe topology for PROFIBUS®-DP is a linear bus. Branching can be accomplished with repeaters or, in the case ofPROFIBUS®-PA, this can be accomplished with the segment couplers. The PROFIBUS®-PA topology follows thephysical layer as defined in ISA SP50.02. Daisy Chain or Star topologies are allowed.

Page 46: Fieldbus Connectivity

Star Topology MethodA Star topology has a central connection point to all terminations. This layout works well when there are many devices in alocalized area. For instance, the control room may be located about 300 meters away from a cracker tower. This tower mayhave five or six temperature transmitters. All of these devices need to be connected to the fieldbus segment. The best designwould be to connect them all to a junction brick and then run a Home Run cable from the junction brick back to the controlroom. See Figure 4 for a pictorial example.

The Home Run cable is considered the main trunk line of communication. Each device that is connected to the junctionbrick is called a spur. In other industrial networks spurs are called drops off the trunk line.

Figure 4 - Star Topology Example

Daisy Chain ConfigurationAnother layout design is to daisy chain all the devices. Each device would require a tee so that the Home Run cablewould be able to go to each device. From a design standpoint, the Daisy Chain method is easiest to do when the exactcable tracks are known. Pre-made cordsets can then be purchased and the network is easy to assemble. See Figure 5 foran example drawing. A fieldbus transmitter is connected to each of the tanks in the field. The Home Run cable essen-tially is routed to each device in series.

In many fieldbus installations it makes sense to mix both Star and Daisy Chain topology layouts. Remember that one of thebenefits to fieldbus is reduced wiring of devices, leading to faster start-up times.

Fieldbus Cable SpecificationsThe specifications for PROFIBUS®-PA physical media are defined by IEC 1158-2 and the ISA-S50.02 Part 2 PhysicalLayer Standards.

The minifast® connectors provide IP67 protection in the rugged polyurethane overmolded body. The surge suppressor is available with stainless steel coupling nuts and ground stud.

HART® Overview

HART® (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) is a 4-20 mA protocol which supports two-way digital communicationfor process measurement and control devices. Although it is not an international standard, it is considered an “open”protocol, broadly accepted in the process industry. HART® devices can store process related information and communicatedigitally. It can also be used with traditional 4-20 mA devices. This is beneficial if there is a large existing installed base of4-20 mA transmitters.

HART® is a master-slave protocol. This meansthat when the master calls out the slave’s address, the slave responds. The master takes control of thetime and operational sequence of the bus. Therecan be two masters, including a hand-held commu-nicator. Up to 15 slave devices can be connectedto one multidrop line (limitations exist for intrinsi-cally safe areas).

HART® uses the Bell 202 standard frequency shiftkeying (FSK) for digital communication. The FSKsignal is superimposed on the 4 to 20 mA analogmeasurement signal. The FSK signal does not cause interference with the analog measurement since the average value iszero. The frequency of 1200 hz is used for a logical ‘1’ and 2200 hz is used for a logical ‘0’.

General Layout Topologies

Field wiring of HART® uses twisted pair cable, either screened as a pair in a cable or multiple screens and an overall screenon cable containing multiple pairs. There are two basic structures for wiring a system. The first is point-to- point wiring. This means that every pair that connects to an instrument is returned to the control, completely isolated from the other pairs. This can either be accomplished with twisted pair cable or a bundled multiple pair cable. See Figure 6. The second type ofstructure is multidrop wiring. This can be used when the HART® enabled transmitters are operating in digital communica-tion only. The transmitters may be wired with a trunk and drop layout(or a Daisy Chain). See Figure 7. Either of thesemethods greatly reduce wiring and allow for the most flexibility in expansion.

The maximum HART® cable length is 1500 meters. However, the physical media is limited by a maximum systemattenuation of 3 dB. This is ensured if there is a resistance-capacitance combination having an RC time-constant value of65 µF (the circuit resistance R divided by the capacitance C). The system design must consider both resistance of thedevice and the cable, likewise the capacitance of the device and the cable. In a typical system the host load resistance is250 . HART® recommends a maximum capacitance of 5000 pF on slave devices. Devices with higher capacitancemust list the capacitance number (CN). This number equals the actual device capacitance divided by 5000 pF. Forexample, a device with a capacitance of 10,000 pF would have CN = 2.

Resistance is measured for both conductors in series. Capacitance is measured from one conductor to all others and thescreen. The values for InterlinkBT cables are as follows:

The maximum cable distance is dependent on the cable type and the total capacitance of the devices. The graph belowprovides guidelines for cable distances based on the standard InterlinkBT cable and assuming a 250 load resistor. Inthe example if the system consisted of 9 devices with an average CN of 2 (i.e. 10,000 pF each) and a host with 5000 pFcapacitance, which totals 0.095 µF (95,000 pF), the maximum cable length would be 900 meters using multidrop struc-ture cable HM40.

Most projects start with a rough definition to develop the capital scope and then progress to detailed development.Development of the capital scope is often expressed in terms of the number of segments, transmitters and tanks. Thecabling can be expressed in the same way. Each transmitter requires one device gland and one cordset. Each tankrequires one tee, one drop cordset and typically one brick. The Home Run or trunk cable can run in either conduit orcable tray, so either a field wireable tee or a conduit adapter is required at each tank. A terminating resistor is needed atthe beginning and end of the network. A simple bill of materials can be developed as follows:

Example: 4 segments, 50 transmitters, 10 tank process

Often, for estimating purposes an average length of cordset and segment length is assumed. In this example 6m (20 ft.)cordsets and four 75m (250 ft) segments are estimated.

The cost and time of coping with continuous changes during the engineering design phase can be very expensive. However, with this model the changes are limited to the length of the cordset and spool of bulk cable. Design changescan even wait until all the transmitters are mounted. Simply taking physical measurements is as valid as any other designmethod.

Plug and play connectorization has been standard practice in industries ranging from appliance manufacturers to indus-trial sensors for many years. These industries have found it necessary to compete in a business climate where speed andconsistency of connection is king. Connectorization is the perfect complement to fieldbus systems. The concepts andgoals are identical…reduced installation, reduced troubleshooting and easy expansion. The fieldbus system minimizespoint to point wiring which can be time consuming and difficult to troubleshoot. Connectorization takes that one stepfurther, almost completely eliminating troubleshooting. Of course unforeseen problems are difficult to measure duringthe initial planning stages. However, problems do happen resulting in real costs - delayed startups, scrapped product, etc.The plants that have implemented plug-and-play connectorization claim up to 75% reduction in start-up. These are realcost savings.

Cost Savings

The initial capital cost is the major factor in selecting a method of connecting devices. These costs include material andinstallation costs. The cost of incorporating plug-and-play connectivity will cost 10 to 60 percent less. Actual savingswill depend on the size and complexity of the installation.

In addition, other factors include reduced design cost, reduced maintenance cost, reduced troubleshooting cost andreduced expansion costs. Some of these cost savings are difficult to determine until the condition exists. However, thesecosts can quickly change from potential cost savings to real cost savings when the installation begins.

The cost of cordsets and bricks will be equivalent or slightly lower compared to the cost of termination in enclosures. The plug-and-play junction bricks are IP67 rated (equivalent NEMA 4X). This mean they can be mounted indoors oroutdoors without any secondary enclosures. A NEMA 4X enclosure can cost anywhere from $75 for steel to $275 forstainless steel. After the design and installation time required to put mounting holes in the enclosure and installing cableglands, the cost can increase by another $40 to $60. A cage clamp style termination block costs $200 to $450 dependingon whether it has short circuit protection. The plug-and-play bricks cost only $295 and $445 depending on whether theyhave short circuit protection. A set of six cordsets costs only $264 (RSV RKV 490-1M).

The material cost comparison for a stainless steel installation is as follows:

Field Wiring Plug-and-Play

NEMA 4X Box (Hoffman® or equivalent) $ 275 Junction Tee (JTBS 49SC-M613) $445Cage Clamp Termination Block 450Installation of Block in Box 50Bulk Cable (6 Meters) 12 Cordsets (Six RSV RKV 490 - 1M - $44.00) 264Device Gland (1/2 NPT Fitting - $8) 48 Device Gland (RSFV 49 - 0.3M/14.5 - $30.30) 181

Total $ 820 Total $ 890

A junction brick system that is completely encapsulated for use indoors or outdoors is equivalent or 10% more expensivethan a termination block mounted in an enclosure. The real savings are in the installation.

The cost of installing a plug-and-play connector system can be 90% lower than terminating in cage clamps. The timerequired to make a plug-and-play connection is less than 30 seconds per connection. The time required to strip the jacket, prepare the conductors, feed the cable through a gland, insert the wires into the terminals and tighten the cable gland is 5to 10 minutes per connection. This is often complicated when the installation is in a physically demanding location. At alabor cost of $28.00 / hour per NECA labor units, this adds up fast. Terminating this many connections on just a 6 – portjunction brick means a difference of $33.00 as compared to $3.30. The real savings are often hidden since the wiringerrors are eliminated.

Field Wiring Plug-and-Play

Install 6 cables to brick (10 min. ea.) $28.00 Install 6 connectors to brick (1/2 min. ea) $1.40Install 6 cables to device (10 min. ea.) $28.00 Install 6 connectors to brick (1/2 min. ea) $1.40Termination check of system (20 min) 9.33 Termination check of system (n/a) -----

Total $65.33 Total $2.80

One of the most important features with plug-and-play connectors is that transmitters can be taken on and off the bus veryquickly – with little or no disruptions to operations and no disruptions to the bus. A device can be added to a junctionbrick spare port much more easily than any terminal strip. Any conceivable change required in the process can be madesimply by planning a couple of spare ports.

Planning for plug-and-play can be second nature in a good installation. As with any process control, there are processesthat need to interact and processes that should stay independent. There are populations of activities and a material flow. The example below shows a layout of a chemical processing facility. The raw material kitchens are controlled on twoseparate segments and the main batch processing areas controlled on three segments. The diagram below shows theposition of the bricks in each process area.

Most smart devices use power from the network cable. Proper design should take this into consideration. The voltageneeded for fieldbus is 9-32 VDC. Most often the typical size for power is 24 VDC because of its popularity. Dependingon the length and type of the fieldbus cable there can be a voltage drop over the cable that can cause the level at the endto be below the 9V threshold. The amperage needed depends on the number of devices and the total current draw ofthose devices. The majority of smart devices will consume 10 to 25 mA of current each.

Fieldbus allows for up to 32 addressable devices per segment. However, most manufacturers of host systems recommendthat a segment have no more than 16 devices on it. The host cards do not have enough computing capabilities to handleall the different tags of data that a full 32 devices would generate.

See Figure 8 for a sample layout of how to compute the needed amperage for a system. On this segment there are 8smart fieldbus devices shown with their corresponding current consumption. Current consumption info should be listedon the device specification sheet or on the device label.

Figure 8 - Sample Layout

Power Considerations

The best way to do the current calculation is to do a Nodal Analysis. This type of analysis involves summing all thecurrent draws at each junction point and then sum the totals of those. It is easier to change the physical layout drawing toa nodal layout. See Figure 9 for the Nodal Drawing from the physical drawing Figure 8.

Figure 9 - Nodal Analysis Drawing

Starting from the right in this example, first sum the currents leaving Node 3.Node 3 = (4*25mA) + 20mA = 140mA.

This now becomes the amount of current necessary at I2, or departing Node 2 supplying Node 3. Then do the samecomputation on Node 2.

Node 2 = 25mA +140mA = 165mA.Now I1 is known to equal 165mA. Working back one more node to Node 1.

Node 1 = 25mA + 165mA = 190mA.

Therefore, for this segment of 8 nodes a power supply capable of 200mA output is required. A good rule of thumb whendealing with industrial networks is to size the power supply with a 25% greater capacity. This allows some coverage fordevices that have a higher inrush current than what is labeled.

In a hazardous area the use of an Intrinsic Safety Barrier will limit the number of devices because of the current output, voltage ouput and the total amount of capacitance and inductance with which the barrier can properly operate.

The voltage drop in the system can be calculated using the same nodal analysis. The voltage drop depends on the lengthof the cable, designated as D1, etc. and the location of the current draw. In this example, a typical 18 AWG fieldbus cablewill be used with a resistance of 6.5 Ω / 1000 ft (0.021 Ω / M). In these calculations we will designate it as Rcable/m.Most fieldbus power systems supply 24 VDC.

This time we need to start at the left and calculate the voltage at Node 1:

Voltage @ Node 1 = 24 VDC – [D1 * Rcable/m] *Itotal

= 24 VDC – [ 15M * 0.021 Ω/M ] * 185 mA

= 23.94 VDC

In a short distance there was not a significant amount of voltage drop, only 0.06 VDC. However, as the distancesincrease the voltage drop becomes a factor. The voltage at Node 2:

Voltage @ Node 2 = Voltage @ Node 1 – [ D2 * Rcable/M ] * I1

= 23.94 VDC – [300M * 0.021 Ω / M] * 165 mA

= 22.90 VDC

Continuing with the last node, Node 3:

Voltage @ Node 3 = Voltage @ Node 2 – [ D3 * Rcable/M ] * I2

= 22.90 VDC – [ 300M * 0.021 Ω / M ] * 140 mA

= 22.02 VDC

So, the entire voltage drop across the system is roughly 2 VDC. All fieldbus devices should operate at a voltage from 9 –32 VDC. Therefore this system should work fine with plenty of margin.

The SPTT1 – A49 field wireable tee has conventional screw terminals inside of a NEMA 4X enclosure for both thetrunk and drop terminations. This allows the drop cable to be pulled through conduit down to a conduit body. The

cable can then be terminated into the screw terminals of theBCA 49–M223 conduit adapter for connection to either oneor two devices or to a brick.

The BCA 49–M223 can also be used to adapt from any conduit body to plug-and-play connectorization.

The two most common methods of installing the trunk cable are cable tray and conduit. Longer runs are typically moredifficult to estimate, so using bulk cable is standard practice. InterlinkBT™ offers several adapter products to break outof either cable tray or conduit.

The SPTTM1–A49 field wireable tee has conventional screw terminals inside of a NEMA 4X enclosure for the trunktermination and a minifast® port for the drop. Plug-and-play cordsets with either standard or armorfast® cable can beused to connect to either a single transmitter or a brick.

InterlinkBT offers a device gland receptacle that mounts into the ½ NPT or M20 port of most transmitters. The devicegland has 2 or 3 wires to connect to the transmitter screw terminals. The other side is either a minifast® or eurofast®receptacle. The device gland is offered as an option by some transmitter manufactures. Otherwise it can be installed in

the field. The advantage of this connection is that theinstallation or replacement of a transmitter can be made veryquickly.

After the transition out of either cable tray or conduit the use of bricks is the best way to consolidate wiring. The brick is aparallel wired device that essentially acts as a multi-drop box. The new JTBS-49SC series and JBBS-49SC series not only consolidate wiring, but also offershort circuit protection.

A terminating resistor is required at both ends of the trunk. The trunk is the longest run of the segment. The purpose ofthe terminating resistor is to preventreflections at the end of the cable.

InterlinkBT offers both a two and three conductor cabling system. A twisted pair (blue and brown) are used to carry thesignal (V+ and V-). The third conductor is provided as a convenience ground for transmitters. If the distance betweenthe transmitter and the brick is relatively short, less than 6m (20 ft), several transmitters can be grounded at the brick. The ground stud should be connected to earth ground with a 12 awg or equivalent conductor. The device ground conduc-tor is broken at P1 (SEGMENT IN) so that the local ground of one brick is not tied to the local ground of another. Thiseliminates the potential of ground loopsin the system. The cables also have ascreen and drain wire. The drain wirepasses through each of the connectorsand the bricks not connected to anychassis grounds. The drain wire shouldbe terminated to an earth ground at asingle point, typically at the earthground for the control system.

Nonincendive Equipment

Simply put, if you supply nonincendive equipment with its rated power and use it per its instructions, it will not produce heator sparks capable of igniting a hazardous atmosphere. It must not have normally arcing contacts and must not produce heatin excess of 80% of the ingnition temperature of the hazardous atmosphere. There is no fixed restriction on the amount ofpower as long as the preceding statement remains true. The energy level carried by the interconnecting wiring may farexceed the ignition curves.

Benefits:

♦ No NRTL approved safety barrier, special enclosure or supply of protective gas is required.♦ Quick disconnects are allowed with the use of a tool removable locking guard.

Nonincendive Circuits

The electrical energy in a nonincendive circuit is incapable of igniting a specific hazardous atmosphere under normalconditions. The concept is very similar to intrinsic safety, but lower safety factor and no faults considered in equipmentexaminations.

The energy level carried by the interconnecting wiring is below the ignition curves with a 10% margin. Therefore, anywiring method suitable for an equivalent non-hazardous location is acceptable.

Quick disconnects are also permitted because their disconnection does not result in an ignition-capable spark.

Benefits:

♦ No special wiring.♦ Quick disconnects allowed.

Terminology

Properly classified Division 2 locations are often non-hazardous. They are essentially ‘buffer zones’ around Division 1locations in which an explosive atmosphere will never be present under normal conditions and only rarely as a result ofunforeseen equipment failures. If electrical faults in equipment occur fairly rarely, the risk of these events happeningsimultaneously is negligible. However, acceptable protection methods for Division 2 locations seem to be less widely under-stood than those for Division 1 locations, despite the lesser hazard. This is partly due to the fact that the somewhat cumber-some term ‘nonincendive’ is used to describe two very different Class 1, Division 2 protection methods:

♦ Nonincendive Equipment♦ Nonincendive Circuits

Nonincendive Installation for Division 2 Hazardous Locations

Non-Hazardous Location

Non-incendiveequipment connectionNon-incendivecircuit connection

Hazardous LocationClass 1, Division 2

The JTBS SC and JBBS SC series of bricks provide short circuit protection. In doing so they also limit the current to eachdrop or spur. The brick is classified as non-incendive equipment. In other words, under normal operating conditions itcannot create a spark that will cause ignition. The connection to the brick is the trunk connection, indicated as P1 and S0.These ports are not current limited and should not be disconnected unless the area is known to be non-hazardous. Inaddition, a tool removable locking guard must be installed on the quick disconnect connector.

Each of the drops, or spurs, is classified as a non-incendive circuit. It is current limited so that the energy in any sparkcaused by the separation of a connector cannot cause ignition. Any method suitable for wiring in ordinary locations can beused on the drop connections, indicated as S1,S2, S3...etc.

Typical Installation

Minifast® and eurofast® connectors are not explosion-proof. They can only be used in a Division 1 location in an intrinsi-cally safe system. The standard bricks, JTBS and JBBS series (not JTBS-49SC or JBBS-49SC) are considered as simpledevices. The bricks have no active circuitry and cannot store or generate more than 1.2 volts, 0.1 ampere, 25 milliwatts, or20 microjoules. These devices can be placed directly in the hazardous location without any certification. InterlinkBT offersa complete line of cordsets with blue cable (change part number from RSV RKV 490 -*M to RSV RKV 490B - *M). It isnot mandatory to use blue cable, but it is considered to be the best practice.

There are basically four types of cable suitable for process bus installations. They are Type MC, Type TC, Type PLTCand Type ITC cable. Due to the similarities of the PLTC and ITC requirements cables will often carry a dual PLTC / ITCrating. Type ITC cable is for instrumentation and control circuits operating at less than 150 volts and less than 5 am-peres. Type PLTC cable is Power Limited Tray Cable, suitable for 300 volts. Process buses are typically 9-32 voltsystems that run at only 2 amps. In addition, ITC cable can be enclosed in a smooth metallic sheath, a continuouscorrugated metallic sheath, or interlocking tape armor applied over the nonmetallic sheath of an ITC cable.

The acronyms of each of the cables are expanded as follows:

ITC - instrumentation tray cablePLTC - power limited tray cableTC – tray cableMC – metal clad

Type ITC cable offers a great deal of flexibility in Class I, Division 2 installations. The basic installation guides requiremechanical protection and minimized open wiring lengths. This serves to protect the cable from potential damage. Someof the basic guidelines are noted in Article 727.6 of the NEC. The summary below may be used as a guideline. However, the local government inspection agency has final jurisdiction on the interpretation of the code.

Cable Types

Armorfast® ITC Cables may be used for open wiring. The cable must be supported and secured every 1.8 m (6 ft).

Standard ITC Cables may be used for open wiring without a metallic sheath or armor between cable tray and equip-ment in lengths not to exceed 15 m (50 ft), where the cable is supported and protected against physical damage usingmechanical protection, such as struts, angles or channels. The cable shall be supported and secured at intervals notexceeding 1.8 m (6 ft).

Installation of Fieldbus Cable in Cable Tray

Installation of Fieldbus Cable with Cables Rated Over 600V

Installation of Fieldbus Cable with Cables Rated 600V or LessFieldbus cable type PLTC is rated for 300 volts. Fieldbus cables may be mixed with other cables rated at either 300 or600 volts. Traditional instrumentation cable was often installed in a separate tray because of the volume of cables. Withfieldbus the number of cables is reduced dramatically, and as such may now be practical to install in the same tray asother general purpose cabling.

Fieldbus cables and branch circuit cables have been installed in the same cable trays without barriers with excellentperformance and reliability.

Fieldbus cable may be installed with cables rated over 600V if the cable is rated over 600 volts is Type MC (Metal Clad)or if the cables are separated with a fixed solid barrier of a material compatible with the cable tray.

Proper Bend Radius for Fixed and Moving Applications

Eliminating Stress Points in Cable Dress

Fixed ApplicationsMinimum bend radius 5 x cable diameter

Moving ApplicationsMinimum bend radius 10 x cable diameter

Strain ReliefCorrect Incorrect

Proper management of cabling systems can mean the difference between a dependable and smooth operating installationand costly recurring down time. The suggestions outlined below illustrate some of the common sources of problems andprovide simple and effective solutions.

Providing sufficent bend radius will allow the cable to absorb the energy of bending over a greater portion of its length, increasing its effective working life. Small increases in the radius of the bend can produce subtantial increases in cablelife.

Installing cables to allow for adequate stress loops and freedom of motion increases the life of the cables. InterlinkBTcordsets incorporate molded strain reliefs that will assist in preventing stress.

Cable Bundling Techniques

Tying Cables with Cable Ties

Correct Incorrect

Correct Incorrect

When bundling several cables together, always keep the bundle loose enough to move within itself. Tightly tied bundlescreate both compression and tension stresses when the bundle is moved.

When tying cable with self locking ties, always leave the ties loose enough for the cables to slide freely under the tie.Over-tightening will create stress concentrations that can cause the conductors to fail prematurely. Never tighten the tieto the point where the cable jacket becomes deformed or pinched.
