The DOs and DON’Ts of Choosing Your Wedding

DressDON’T schedule your wedding dress appointment late in the day.

The early bird gets the worm—er, in this case, the early bride gets an energetic, fresh bridal store staff that hasn’t dealt with the concerns of a million clients already. “If you get the first appointment of the morning, the store will likely be less crowded, and you’ll get the full attention of your consultant,” says Camille McLamb, owner of Chicago-based wedding planning service Camille Victoria Weddings.

DO focus first on finding the best wedding dress silhouette for you.

Details are important—a long row of teensy pearl buttons and a well-placed ruffle or two can mean the difference between a good wedding dress and a great one. But before you start nitpicking the details, “first figure out the silhouette that works best for you,” says gown designer Amsale Aberra. “Try not to get caught up in the trend of the moment, but instead focus on your personal style and what flatters you most.”

DON’T forget about the top of your wedding dress

A long, gorgeous wedding dress with a fancy hem is to die for. Just remember that the top of your dress is what people will notice most—and what will show up in most wedding pictures. “The majority of wedding photos that guests take of you are from the waist up,” says Margee Higgins, 30. Higgins picked a Lazaro gown with straps and a high belt, both of which you could see in all her photos.

Page 8: FIND THE BEST WEDDING DRESSES - vivimagazine.com · actual wedding day is going to be like. 8. Hiring everyone from hiring the photographer, to the caterer and booking some entertainment

DON’T pick a wedding dress just because it’s trendy now.

Trendy wedding dresses won’t necessarily stand the test of time—flip through your parents’ wedding album for evidence of that. “A gown should be timeless,” says Erika Unbehaun, owner of Flutterfly Events, a wedding planning company in London. “When you feel sexy and glamorous in a gown that has both modern and traditional elements, and you feel like a better version of yourself when you’re wearing it, you’ve found your timeless gown. It’s something that will never go out of style.”

DO bring your camera wedding dress shopping (if the boutique allows it).

Embrace your inner Cher Horowitz (we all have some of the Clueless character in us) and photograph your dress possibilities instead of putting all your trust in the mirror. “Mirrors are used to sell dresses—cameras don’t lie,” says Richard O’Malley, owner of the O’Malley Project, a company that offers consulting services for event planners. “Because you’ll be looking at the photos of this dress for years to come, know how it photographs from all angles. One potential hiccup: Some boutiques don’t allow dress photography. Call ahead to see if you can take a few snaps for decision-making purposes only.

Page 9: FIND THE BEST WEDDING DRESSES - vivimagazine.com · actual wedding day is going to be like. 8. Hiring everyone from hiring the photographer, to the caterer and booking some entertainment

DO try on as many wedding dresses as you need to…

According to Nicole Janowicz, celebrity wedding stylist, almost any dress can look gorgeous on a hanger (or it can look terrible). Resist snap judgment. “Once a dress is on a woman’s body, it takes on a different shape and look,” she says. “This means that a bride will try on many dresses, and she should. I had a celebrity bride try on 27 dresses at a fitting in order to find the perfect reception dress. Just as it takes time to find a husband or wife, it takes time to find the perfect gown.”

Page 10: FIND THE BEST WEDDING DRESSES - vivimagazine.com · actual wedding day is going to be like. 8. Hiring everyone from hiring the photographer, to the caterer and booking some entertainment

…but DON’T try on too many wedding dresses.

We’re not trying to confuse you here—we just mean that you shouldn’t feel forced to try on more or fewer gowns than you want. According to Lacy Pool, a bridal stylist and blogger for Serendipity Bridal, you can suffer wedding dress overload (and total panic) if you feel like you must try on 20 different dresses at each salon you visit. “Too many choices and too many places can add stress and confusion,” Pool says. Nine times out of 10, you will go back to your first salon and order your favorite gown anyway, so go with your gut.” Pool’s tip: Find a bridal salon that carries your top three designers and “gets” your style.

Page 11: FIND THE BEST WEDDING DRESSES - vivimagazine.com · actual wedding day is going to be like. 8. Hiring everyone from hiring the photographer, to the caterer and booking some entertainment

DON’T feel like you must bring an audience when you try on wedding dresses.

Wedding TV shows make it look like you need to bring every one of your female relatives, your neighbor and your kindergarten teacher with you to help with the dress search. “I felt pressure to bring a group of girlfriends with me,” says Breen Halle, 28, from Miami Beach, Fla., who was married in February. “The result was negative. Too many opinions, thoughts and coordination. I found success going to the salon myself and selecting my gown. And I learned it’s perfectly normal to go alone—not to mention stress-free.”

Page 12: FIND THE BEST WEDDING DRESSES - vivimagazine.com · actual wedding day is going to be like. 8. Hiring everyone from hiring the photographer, to the caterer and booking some entertainment

DO wear a gorgeous bra when you’re trying on wedding dresses.

On wedding dress try-on day, you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your skivvies. Admiring your pretty new bra between gowns will make you feel much more positive than catching a glimpse of the ratty old gray one you’ve had for years. Plus, a well-fitting bra can actually help in your search. “Many women don’t realize the power of having well-fitted undergarments,” says Kpoené Kofi-Nicklin, the owner and designer of Mignonette Bridal. “Go to a department store that has a bra fit specialist, or a lingerie shop, and get fitted for a new bra. You are going to be wearing a gorgeous dress on your wedding day, so there’s no excuse for wearing the bra you’ve had since college underneath.”

Page 13: FIND THE BEST WEDDING DRESSES - vivimagazine.com · actual wedding day is going to be like. 8. Hiring everyone from hiring the photographer, to the caterer and booking some entertainment

DON’T freak out about wedding dress sizing.

“I’m a bridal consultant, but even I was alarmed by how big the dresses were when I was trying them on,” says Gail Johnson, of Gail Johnson Weddings. “Bridal gowns run two to three sizes larger [than your regular size]. Once you get your head around that, be realistic; pay attention to how it looks, not what the label reads. It took me some time to deal with that myself—I actually cried because of the size!”

Page 14: FIND THE BEST WEDDING DRESSES - vivimagazine.com · actual wedding day is going to be like. 8. Hiring everyone from hiring the photographer, to the caterer and booking some entertainment

DON’T forget that all wedding dress and accessory sales are usually final.

Gulp—no pressure, right? But it’s a realistic reminder that you should stay serious in your search for your wedding dress and accessories. “I had an impulse buy of a fun fascinator,” says Lori Lenz, 40,.”Now I’m realizing it doesn’t really work with the rest of the wedding and I should just get a simple veil. Only now, I have a hundred-dollar clip-on hat that I didn’t realize was nonreturnable. ”

Dream DressesChoose the right dress for your body

An A-Line or Princess Shape dress has fitted vertical seams running from the shoulders down to the flared shirt, creating an “A” shape. The A-Line shape can be created from a variety of fabrics including lace, satin and chiffon. Best for: brides with small waists and those wanting to hide broad hips and large thighs.

Empire: A high waistline and seam just underneath the bust. Best for: small busted brides and creating height for petite brides.

Ball Gown: Traditional wedding dress with a fitted bodice and a floor-length skirt. Usually worn in a more formal setting such as a church. Best for: brides with slim waistlines, and great for hiding full hips.

Sheath: Straight –line, fitted dress from the shoulders to the ankles. Best for: tall slim brides. Mermaid: A narrow fitted dress designed to show off a brides curves, with the bottom flaring out like that of a mermaid. Best for: tall slim brides, and creating height for petite brides.

Strapless: Wedding dress without any straps. Best for: curvaceous brides wanting to draw particular attention to their face and arms.

Once you have decided on which style of dress is most flattering for you, you need to take the other important factors into consideration. It all depends on what you can afford to spend.

If you are between sizes always buy the larger size, as it will be much easier for you to have the dress taken in to fit you if you lose weight, rather than taken out as a result of you gaining weight.

Give yourself plenty of time to find your wedding dress. Start looking 12 months in advance. At this stage in the search this should be seen as research to help you decide on which styles you like. Build your accessories around the dress rather than the otherway round. By doing so you reassure yourself that this is the right dress and you are just looking for accessories to complete the look.

A perfect placeSome people plan their whole day around their dream wedding location, while others start with a blank page. Either way, choosing your wedding venue is one of the most important wedding planning decisions you’ll make.

The first thing to take into account when choosing a wedding location is that there are likely to be two parts of your wedding to organise – the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception. As regards to the ceremony, a church wedding is still the favourite choice for many couples, and most have a particular church in mind.

If, on the other hand, you’re thinking about a civil wedding, you have the option of choosing a venue that will host both your wedding ceremony and your wedding reception. If this is what you are hoping for, you will need to choose a venue that is licensed for marriage ceremonies. This may come with a higher price tag than non-licensed wedding venues, but has the benefit of minimising the amount of travelling involved for you and your wedding guests. How many guests? The type of wedding you have will depend partly on how big it will be, so here are some things to think about before approaching wedding venues:

Page 19: FIND THE BEST WEDDING DRESSES - vivimagazine.com · actual wedding day is going to be like. 8. Hiring everyone from hiring the photographer, to the caterer and booking some entertainment

It may sound obvious but many venues will not be able to magic up extra space from nowhere if you add 20 extra guests at the last minute. You should have a good idea of numbers before you start looking at venues.

Seated or standing wedding reception? A formal meal will obviously require more space than a stand-up buffet, so a venue whose seated capacity is 100 might well be able to accommodate 200 for a canapé reception. Which do you want? Entertainment facilities: Bands and other entertainment can take up a large amount of space, as can a dance floor, so decide when and where you want the entertainment to take place, and check with the venue that this can be done in the space available.

Which wedding venue?Any number of buildings can make a perfect wedding reception venue, but here are some of the most popular options:Historic wedding reception venue. Castles, country houses and stately homes are among the locations many dream of for their big day. If your budget can stretch to it, this offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy the use of a stunning building.Hotel wedding reception. There are so many different types of hotel that there’s likely to be something for everyone, from traditional to ultra-modern. Having accommodation on the spot is, of course, a big plus.Marquee wedding reception. If you have access to spacious gardens or other outdoor space, a marquee could be worth consideringRestaurant or pub wedding reception. Food and drink are among the main ingredients for a successful wedding reception, so where better to head than to a lovely restaurant or pub? Bear in mind that you’re more likely to find a good match if your wedding party is smaller, and if you’re lucky you might even be able to escape the heavy costs that are often quoted as soon as you mention the ‘w’ word!

Once you have decided on your dress and you are happy with the way it looks, you should at some point consider carefully what is the best way to accessorise your wedding day attire. Wearing the right jewellery is important to any bride wanting to ensure she has the perfect look on her special day.

Most accessories comprise of necklaces and bracelets as well as earrings, and for some brides, tiaras, headbands and even some facial jewellery can be added to their accessory list.

Don’t forget the most important jewellery of the day. If your engagement ring already has a relatively big stone(s) you might want to go for a matching, but smaller, subtle stone to compliment the one you already have. Alternatively you could go for a plain wedding band. This is often the more popular and affordable option. The metal used in your wedding ring not only affects the look of the ring but also how hard wearing it is. Rings worn everyday will wear away gradually. If your job involves manual work but you want to wear your ring all the time then look for a hard wearing metal. The most common finish for a wedding ring is a mirror finish where the ring is polished until the metal becomes highly reflective. This is a simple finish which looks elegant and traditional when combined with a classic gold band, or ultra modern and sleek in one of the silver metal

It is a memorable experience for mothers and daughters to organise a wedding. Traditionally, the mother of the bride plays a hugely influential and prominent role.

If the bride’s mother is hosting the wedding, especially from her home or at a local venue, then her level of involvement is high. Alongside the bride, she is in charge of most of the organisation.

The bride should clearly establish how much she wants her mother to do. She can take some of the pressure off the bride by attending meetings and making appointments; she may also be asked to send out the invitations and manage the responses.

The mother of the bride also plays a prominent role on the wedding day:

- She helps, if required, with the dressing of the bride.- She usually accompanies the bridesmaids to the ceremony.- She is the last to be seated before the bride’s entrance, and is accompanied down the aisle to her seat on the arm of the chief usher.- She sits, with the father of the bride or whoever is chosen to give the bride away, on the left of the aisle.- She sometimes lifts the bride’s veil back during the first hymn (this duty may also be carried out by the chief bridesmaid).- She joins the recessional on the arm of the groom’s father.- At the reception, she is a co-host, responsible for welcoming guests, circulating and making introductions.

Bloomin LovelyWedding flowers are a beautiful way to decorate your wedding ceremony and reception. As with the rest of your wedding details the wedding flowers and colours that you decide to choose will be key and play a big role in your day.

Not only will you need wedding flowers to decorate your ceremony and reception but you will need a stunning bouquet to hold as you walk down the aisle, your bridesmaids will also need a bouquet to carry and it is traditional to order a selection of button holes or boutonnières to distribute throughout your wedding party, including the groom.

Go for something that you will feel comfortable holding as you walk down the aisle. A bouquet that is too big, or too small, may not suit the overall style of your wedding. Your wedding flowers can also be incorporated into decorating your wedding reception via your wedding tables buffet table and the table where your wedding cake will sit.

Arriving there has never been a better choice of vehicle. From the traditional Rolls, the elegant horse and carriage it is now even fashionable to arrive in a camper van or VW beetle.

If the bride and groom are leaving the reception by car, chances are the best man will have attached various tin cans, balloons and other bits and pieces to the back of the vehicle. This stems from the old tradition of tying shoes to the back of the bride and groom’s carriage to represent the transfer of property from the father of the bride to the groom. Shouting and cheering, the shooting of fire crackers and the ringing of bells were supposed to protect the bride by warding off evil spirits! Guests are supposed to stay at the reception until the couple leaves, so if there is to be no formal ‘going away’ let your guests know (especially the older ones) that you intend to dance the night away

The wedding cake is often a focal point during your reception.

Choosing the right cake can enhance the atmosphere, and if it is made well, give your guests a taste to remember. Look in cake shops and bridal magazines for your inspiration. If you’re having a traditional wedding you might consider having a traditional wedding cake with a fruit tier and a sponge tier, as not everyone likes fruit cakes. If you’re having a contemporary wedding then you could have a more novel wedding cake perhaps reflecting your personality.

For most people not having a wedding cake at their wedding would be unthinkable. But open your minds to alternatives, or even an addition to the classic wedding cake.

For all you chocolate lovers out there, the chocolate fountain provides an irresistible aroma and beautiful display of cascading luxury Belgian chocolate to tantalise all who see it. Your guests can dip a variety of fondue foods into the fountain including marshmallows, strawberries, exotic fruits and profiteroles.

Sugar Sculptures are eye catching sculptures made of sugar and mixed media, something which is sure to get all your guests talking about long after your wedding day. They can also be designed to hold cake in the base. So you can have your cake and eat it!

Ice Sculptures create a unique sculpture for your wedding day. That will allow your guests to watch it delicately melt throughout the night. If your wedding is based on a particular theme the sculpture could be used to complete the picture

It may be a long standing tradition that weddings predominately revolve around the Bride and ‘the dress’ but times are a changing and the Groom’s are stepping up to the mark and putting their stamp on things in the style stakes.

The Morning Suit

Traditionally seen at the Royal Wedding or on a toff at Ascot, this consists of tails (jacket), waistcoat, and either plain or striped trousers. Would probably suit a traditional church wedding held earlier in the day. Still a popular choice but I would try and add a fashion element to it by going for a 3/4 tails with tux detail, or a slate grey with modern highlights.

The Modern Man’s suit

Slim fit (preferably) and tailored to perfection, modern attire for a modern Groom. Teamed with a smart tie, pocket square and sharp shoes I’m not sure you can go that wrong with this option. A shawl collar is a great update on the suit and works well for a wedding. You can also be quite creative with your shirt choice, a subtle floral print can be a great look for a summery country style wedding. Don’t be afraid to be a bit fashion forward with your choices.

The 3 PC’er

A personal fave of mine. Slim fit with a modern cut to the waistcoat and a statement tie, this is a wedding day winner. You could accessorise with cufflinks, a tie pin and a colorful pocket square to make it pop. A dark navy or bright blue works great in this style and is a great shade to co-ordinate with accent colors. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous check out the awesome burnt orange suit in the bottom right hand corner! (Love the tie too!)

The Tuxedo

Black tie is becoming an increasingly popular choice for Grooms attire, particularly for late afternoon / evening weddings. Update this classic by choosing an alternative color such as aubergine or slate blue. Also, pop Black Tie on your wedding invites and you’ll have one snazzy wedding on your hands. (Just saying!)

The Casual option

Maybe you’re getting married on a beach in Thailand (lucky you!) or at a vineyard in sunny Spain. Whatever the location, if your wedding day is set to be a scorcher the last thing you want is to be melting in a heavy wool suit. So choose your style and your fabrics wisely. If you want to stick with a traditional suit make sure the wool and the suit is a summer weight. Otherwise you could go for a more casual style and opt for a linen suit with an open shirt collar or lose the jacket completely and just have a really smart waistcoat and trousers. You can accessories it up (i’m thinking braces and a bow tie?!) and it can look just as good. Keep colors quite muted and go for dusky tones or neutral shades. You can always add a pop of color with a button hole or tie.

Whatever you decide to wear on your big day, make sure it’s something you feel 100% awesome in. A well made suit, be it bespoke or bought off the rack, should see you in to old age (i.e it should be bloomin’ well made!)

Every single bride that is preparing for her wedding day knows that she wants to look her best on the day and while some will have a professional make up artist come to their house and do their make up, for others this might not be an option. Whether it is because your budget is not able to stretch as far as a professional make up artist or if it is because you would prefer to do your own make up on the day in order for your look to be just the way you want it, you will need to practice and pick up as many tips of advice as you can. Make up can enable someone to show off their big eyes or high cheekbones and even cover up the great big spot that appears on the morning of your wedding! • Make sure that travel cost, service, makeup and VAT are all included in the total makeover price. • Whoever is doing your makeup on the day make sure you have a practice run, so you know exactly what to expect on the day. • Use waterproof mascara, in case you have a tearful moment. • Base. Use a thin layer of your usual foundation to your lips. Using foundation will also tone down your lip colour but will give more staying power. • Lip liners/pencils go a long way in helping your lipstick remain where it should be and not bleed. Thinner lips can be given a plumper look by using a slightly darker shade than your lipstick or apply liner just outside the natural lip line and dab a tiny dot of gloss in the middle of your bottom lip. You can use your lip liner as a base as well as you placing a line on your outer lips

When your wedding day arrives, regardless of what colour or length your hair normally is, you will want to make it look like it’s never looked before. Deciding on which style you really want may take more planning than you think. You may want to have a style that involves having longer hair than you have now, or maybe shorter, or maybe you want a tiara or other accessory. Maybe you fancy a different colour but are not sure which?

For those brides-to-be that have an all time favourite hairstyle that they have already worn a few times before, you will have more time to concentrate on what other accessories you will wear in your hair. For those who have not decided yet, or don’t know what will go well with their wedding dress, outfit or tiara a few ideas are listed below that may help.

•Browse through as many bridal magazines as you can looking at all the hairstyles. •Ask close friends and family members, as well as your hairdresser, which style may suit you. •Your hairstyle should compliment your wedding dress, for example swept up hairstyles suit a backless dress whilst romantic ringlets or cascading loose curls look wonderful on a princess ball gown. •Visit the hairdresser up to six months before your special day for any treatments such as perms, cuts and colouring. •Hair grows about half an inch a month so start growing as soon as you have decided if your chosen hairstyle is to be for long hair. It’s always easier to have shorter hair when it is long, than longer hair when it is short! •When booking a stylist try and get one that comes with a recommendation from friends and previous brides. •Take into consideration the texture of your hair before fully deciding on the style. What looks great in a magazine or somebody else may not look as good on you! •Choose a style that you are going to feel comfortable in. If you don’t like hair in your face and you are always pushing it away then go for a style that is tied away, keeping it tidy all day, yet at the same time elegant and classy. •Your hairstyle should compliment both your wedding dress and facial shape and of course, most importantly, make you feel beautiful
