Large numbers are numbers that are significantly larger than those ordinarilyused in everyday life

    Examples:

The number of neuronal connections in the human brain (estimated at 1014) The Sun age is about 4,5 billion years: 12105,4 years

he Earth Mass is 24105,4 kg

Small numbers are number close to zeroExamples:

    Radius of ahydrogen atom: 2.5 10-11 m

Mass of an electron: 31109 kg

    2.- Maps: Scale and distance

If you are travelling from London to Oxford, for example, and you need to knowhow far it is, it would be very difficult to work this out if the map does not have ascale.

Go to the POWERPOINTSCALE AN DISTANCE

HOMEWORK1) The scale of a map is 1:500.000.

    a) A distance is measured as 3cm on the map. How many km is thisequivalent to in real life?

    b) What distance on the map will represent 25km?

    2) The scale of a map is 1:300.000.c) A distance between two towns is measured as 12 cm on the map. How

many km is this equivalent to in real life?d) What distance on the map will represent 24km?

    3) A particular map shows a scale of 1:250.000 What would the map distance

(in cm) be if the actual distance is 100 km?

    4) A particular map shows a scale of 1 : 5000. What is the actual distance ( inm ) if the map distance is 8 cm?

    3) CONVERSION TABLE : IMPERIAL to METRIC

    HOMEWORK

    1) How many km are there in 5 miles?

    2) how many feet are in 3,45 km?3) how many yard are in 72,5 miles?

    Length1 mile = 1.609 km1 yard = 0.9144 m1 foot = 0.3048 m1 inch = 25.4 mm

    4) Basic questions on geometry ( perpendicular and parallel lines )

A line extends infinitely and is named by labeling two points on the line withcapital letters or by putting a lower case letter near it. Both are illustrated

    below:

, which does not have the arrow heads, indicates a line segment, which isfinite in length (only the part of the line from A to B).

    This lines are parallels

A right angleis one that measures exactly 90 degrees:

    These lines are perpendicular

    this lines are intersecting lines
