From Our NVBS President:

I hope all of the NVBS members are having a great summer of . . .

catching up, gardening, housecleaning (NOT), AND the biggie

BEADING! AND maybe a vacation, travel. A beading vacation?

I have had my usual busy season, sometimes I think there has been too

much on the plate, but then I would rather be busy than not.

I returned from Bead and Button this year to two grandchildren and their mothers dog-I say that

as King loves her the best, for three weeks as they were in the process of moving from Ohio to

MD. I am so very thankful to have my babies back in the area! It was so wonderful to celebrate

my daughter’s birthday this year with her and her family. And yes, the dog-King was really glad

to see me-I think me might love me second best as while he was at our house he decided to love

me best!

I have been of late busy prepping for the next round of applications, for Bead and Button and

Beadfest. I will also use these pieces for bead societies and bead shops in the next year.

As we go into the fall the Vienna Community Center is no longer available to us for quite a

while the community center takes care of some very much needed renovations. So we will be

meeting at the Vienna Arts Center for the interim. Vienna Arts Center is not perfect as the

parking lot is uneven and not well lit-so be careful. Also, we will probably need to set up chairs

and take them back down, so your help would be appreciated.

Also, as of this date we have had very little actual interest with follow through (as in the

returning of an application) in the Trunk Show to be held in October. Many of you expressed

interest in doing the show and have not sent in an application. If you want the show to be a go

PLEASE send in an application ASAP. Check out our NVBS home page as it has the

information for the trunk show and the email link to receive the application.

Also, check out the links for our NVBS classes this September with Amy Katz and the October

class with me-Diane Dennis. Take advantage of taking a class with us, we are national teachers,

and through the NVBS, you have the advantage of a great class and at a greatly reduced price to

you.

We also need someone to step-up to run the bead society. And to date I have not personally

heard any interest from anyone. We need a president and a vice-president. I will not be going

into the 2016 year. I have too much on my plate and I just can't do a good job of running the

NVBS. I feel most of the time like I am spinning plates and the pressure is just too great.

And don't forget to pick up your NVBS Bead Challenge piece at the September meeting. $10

for the challenge. Return with your completed Challenge piece at the December Holiday Party.

The rules are simple: use the 'piece(s)', add to it as you desire. It can be jewelry or not. Just

Bead Creative!

Bead Store Adventure in my own Backyard – by Pam Troutman I thumbed through the bead shop directory of the June 2015 Bead and Button magazine and there it was again – a bead shop in Annandale, VA. I’ve seen the ad several times, but this time I pulled the page out and put it on my “to-see” list. I used to live in Annandale 17 years ago, but I never saw any place that said “beads”. So May 26 was the day. After I ran an errand, I drove up Little River Turnpike and at 7120 there was a building marked “Antiques and Rugs”. Not the title in the ad of “Tribal Rugs and Jewelry”, but I’ll go inside. I figured there might be a section of beads.

The antiques are upfront in a clutter. Then you see the jewelry cases. To the left is a whole room full of gemstone bead strands and small containers of beads. Ahead are more jewelry cases – filled with necklaces, pendants, and rings. Then you might notice the rugs and the cases with sculptures and Middle East artifacts. To the right is another room filled with gemstone strands and silver beads. More jewelry cases are found in the back room. I truly was not prepared for the variety of gemstones, silver work and artisan jewelry that existed in this one place. I want to go back sometime and really take my time to look around – it is like a small museum.

The owner, Safi Habib, was very courteous and we talked about how he used to attend the NVBS shows but had to stop in 2007 because it was difficult to do shows and run several shops. He used to have locations in DC and Tyson’s Corner, but all that he can manage now is located in Annandale. I picked up a few Nepal and carved beads and then I saw a strand of jade beads that took my breath away – I did not leave empty handed. I also saw a necklace that I have to give serious thought to buying.

So the next time you want to go bead shopping, add Annandale to the list of Burke, Falls Church, Occoquan and Vienna

My Time at the 2015 Bead and Button Show, By Dianne Dennis

I stayed a full week at this year's Bead and Button Show in Milwaukee, WI. I flew in on a Saturday and a week and a day later I flew home. I taught two classes, my third class I canceled due to really low enrollment. I also treated myself to three classes. I traveled and roomed with the wonderfully bead possessed Susan Etkind! The first thing we did after checking in was to go to the grocery store for breakfast, lunch and snack things for the week, then on to dinner. We sorta got organized for the week. We each choose a side of the room and made a pile of all our assorted and very needed beading stuff! I actually had to put my clothes in drawers, as I needed my suitcases for transporting kits. And I had so much stuff I even needed Susan's suitcase for my display items. I stayed for the first time at the Hilton and I have to say I highly recommend it. Although as a teacher where you stay is often dependent on where you are teaching. This year I had two classes at the Hilton. My first year teaching I taught at the Hyatt, so I stayed there. The second year I taught, my room assignment said WC? The only thing I could think of was-water closet? Ha-it means the Wisconsin Center! So if I were to stay at the Hilton and my classes were at the Hyatt I would be facing a very long hike though the convention center, up and down the ramp near the Hyatt, up and down elevators near the Hilton. It wouldn't be so bad if I weren't rolling two large and heavy suitcases as well as a tote bag! On with the classes, I took a most wonderful beading class from Kathy King on Sunday. My class was on bead quilling, it was so much fun to learn a new beading technique. My next two classes on Tuesday and Friday were photography classes. One a basic hands on how to set up and take pictures. The other was on Photoshop and editing. Both were excellent and they were with Doug Baldwin. My first class I taught was my Puttin' On the Ritz Bracelet (that I am teaching in September for NVBS) on Wednesday, followed that evening by the Meet the Teachers Event. A very early and busy day for me! I had three students assist me for the event. Very busy couple of hours.

With such a busy day on Wednesday I was very grateful to have Thursday off. So I reorganized my kits, got organized for teaching for Saturday's class. I shipped home a box of things from meet the teacher’s night that I didn't need for the rest of the week. And yes, I did send home some laundry. I then roamed around Milwaukee a bit. The Hilton conveniently situated so that it makes it easy to get around. I walked to a market and had lunch and bought some fruit for the rest of the week. I also checked out the little mall near by. Thursday night was the opening of the show with a preview of the shopping! It was fun to roam and see what was new! I purchased our bead challenge pieces that night. A gal in my Wednesday class told me that she thought she had some goodies at her booth that I would like. And she was right! She helped me pick the challenge piece out-gave us a great price on them! I also, saw a component that gave me a great idea for another class to submit to the 2016 Bead and Button Show! Saturday was my completely full Puttin' On the Ritz Necklace. What a great bunch of ladies. I went to dinner that night with a group of beady friends. We were all so tired that we just ate the buffet dinner in the Hyatt! So it was then back to the hotel to start packing to go home on Sunday. After checking out on Sunday, I went back shopping. I only had the preview night and Sunday for shopping. Sunday is also a nice time to say hello to bead friends like our own Carrie Johnson who traveled all the way from Hawaii to teach and vend. I flew home on Sunday evening. Whew! What a week! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
