Provenance: Acquired from the artist in November, 1900, by W.P. Toler, New York City; returned to the artist for touch up; upon Nast’s death in 1902 the painting was retained by his widow, Sarah; rights transferred by Toler to Harmon De Pau Nutting, New Jersey, in 1904; sold to J. P. Morgan in 1908; donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1910, where it was given the object number 10.208; returned by The Metropolitan Museum to the Morgan family in 1928, then donated to Cooper Union Museum that same year; sold at auction in 1946 to Meredith Galleries, New York City, with a group of other items from the Cooper Union Museum; sold by Meredith Galleries, then whereabouts unknown; purchased in 1961 in Detroit by the current owner.

N.B. The painting at hand, a deeply mystical rendering of the head of Christ, seems an unexpected subject for Thomas Nast, the renowned and influential political cartoonist. However, Nast maintained an interest in history painting, and there exists at least one other related religious work by his hand, a charcoal drawing entitled He Who Practices His Teaching (1895), in the collection of the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum in Morristown, New Jersey. Nast is best known for his drawings, featured regularly in Harper’s Weekly from 1862 to 1886. Nast’s images are iconic—the Democratic Donkey, Republican Elephant, Uncle Sam, Columbia, Tammany Tiger, and Santa Claus, all were his creations.1 The power of Nast’s drawings, based on his fiercely held political beliefs, was never to be underestimated. Ulysses S. Grant attributed his election as President in 1868 “to the sword of Sheridan and the pencil of Nast.” And the infamous “Boss” Tweed, object of some of Nast’s most pointed cartoons, told his followers, “Stop them damn pictures. I don’t care what the papers write about me. My constituents can’t read. But, damn it, they can see the pictures.”2

N.B. The lot is accompanied by the original sales receipt made out to Mr. Arthur Goadby from The New York Co-operative Society dated May 26, 1909, and by a handwritten letter from Maxfield Parrish to Arthur Goadby, dated November 10th, 1915. Parrish’s letter responds to a note of appreciation sent by Mr. Goadby to the artist. In his reply, Parrish discusses the title, Summer, and relates that, “...it was begun as a painting of ‘Pandora’ reclining against the box and idly fingering the knot. Afterwards it was cut down and changed to its present form. May be the dealer gave it the name of ‘Summer.’ I dare say it was merely a guess, and any name you may see fit to give it, I am sure will answer just as well. The landscape was purely imaginative, and the figure partly painted from life. It was painted here in Cornish, and represents no particularly country.” Further jottings from Mr. Goadby

include a photograph of The Vale of Tempe in Thessaly, and his notes drawing parallels between that landscape and his Parrish painting. Goadby writes, “it is remarkable that the artist had conceived an imaginary scene laid in Greece which later is shown to be so accurate.” So struck was Goadby by the similarity, he decided to re-christen his Parrish painting “The Vale of Tempe.”

The lot is also accompanied by a letter of authentication from Alma Gilbert-Smith that provides further history. Consulting Parrish’s records, Ms. Smith found that the artist completed two different paintings of Pandora that were both submitted to Collier’s. The first, a nude, and the painting at hand, was submitted in November 1907, but the painting was returned, unused. In June of 1908 Parrish submitted a second Pandora to Collier’s, this version with the figure in a diaphanous gown. The second painting was published by Collier’s as Pandora: Paradise for Children in their October 16, 1909, issue, and later appeared in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s A Wonderbook of Tanglewood Tales in 1910.

We wish to thank Alma Gilbert-Smith for her kind assistance with cataloguing the lot. $40,000-60,000

416.Elihu Vedder (American, 1836-1923)

Study for The Abundance of the Days of the Week, Sunday, A Ceiling Panel from the Residence of Collis P. Huntington, New York, c. 1893Inscribed “Elihu Vedder” within the composition.Pastel on paper, circular format, 8 1/4 x 8 1/8 in., framed.Condition: Rippling, paper tape residue in corners, affixed to backing mat in three corners.

N.B. Through architect George Post, Elihu Vedder received a commission to create ceiling panels for the home of Collis P. Huntington in New York in 1893. Vedder was particularly pleased with the commission, because it offered him a reason to decline a commission for ceiling paintings at the World’s Columbian Exposition, which he felt posed particular technical difficulty and which would require his staying in Chicago to create on site. While Vedder was reluctant to disappoint architect Charles McKim, who had brought him to Chicago, Vedder considered the Huntington commission to be the best he had ever received. The ceiling for the Huntington residence could be completed on canvas in Rome and then brought to New York for installation.1 The subject for the Huntington commission was the “Abundance of the Days of the Week,” with each day presented using a corresponding god or goddess and planet. The drawing at hand shows Apollo, who represented Sunday, surrounded by the Four Seasons.2 The finished painting, which formed the central panel of the ceiling, is now in the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery, as are a number of Vedder’s studies for the commission.

515.József Rippl-Rónai (Hungarian, 1861-1927)

Figures in a FieldSigned “Rónai” l.r., inscribed “Rippl-Ronai” in pencil on a label on the reverse.Oil on cardboard, 19 1/2 x 27 1/4 in. (49.4 x 69.4 cm), framed.Condition: Bowing to the support, wear along edges, surface irregularities, surface grime.

Provenance: Purchased by Miklos Sperling (Hungarian/American, 1899-1971), Indianapolis, Indiana, probably while traveling in Hungary, then by descent within the family to the current owner.

N.B. József Rippl-Rónai was one of the leading artists of his generation in Hungary. Born in Kaposvar, he began the formal study of art in Munich in 1884. However, he was drawn to the art climate of Paris, moving there in 1887 and working in the studio of Hungarian ex-patriot painter Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900). Rippl-Rónai enrolled at the Académie Julian in 1890, studying beside Vuilllard, Bonnard, and Maillol, as well as James Pitcairn-Knowles (Scottish, b. 1864), who would become a lifelong friend and artistic collaborator. During this time Rippl-Rónai became associated with the Nabis, but also absorbed the poetic aesthetic of James Abbott McNeill Whistler.

When Rippl-Rónai returned to Budapest in 1901, the city was emerging as a cosmopolitan center, and Hungary itself was focused on the cultivation of a national cultural identity. Rippl-Rónai developed a personal approach that brought the avant-garde styles of Paris to bear on subjects of Hungarian domestic life. His work was not limited solely to painting; he created prints, ceramics, and other decorative arts, and also art glass in conjunction with Pitcairn-Knowles. Later in life he would work extensively in pastel.

The painting at hand most likely dates between 1908 and 1914, a period in Rippl-Rónai’s work that is described as the “kukoricas,” which translates to “maize” or “rice” pictures. The description refers to the application of paint in bold daubs of pure color built up over the surface of the canvas. Rippl-Rónai tended to use very intense color, in the manner of the Fauves, but in this example the palette is more naturalistic. The scene of agricultural workers was one of several outdoor subjects favored by Rippl-Rónai at the time.

We would like to thank Dr. Mariann Gergely, Chief Curator, Magyar Nemzeti Galeria (Hungarian National Gallery), Budapest, for her kind assistance authenticating this painting, and Dr. Paul Stirton for his helpful comments and advice. A letter of authentication from Dr. Gergely accompanies the lot. $50,000-70,000

Oil on paperboard, 21 x 26 in. (53.3 x 66.1 cm), framed.Condition: Surface grime, subtle craquelure.

Provenance: A private Massachusetts estate.

N.B. Utrillo first began creating art at the age of nineteen, while hospitalized at Sainte Anne Asylum, a municipal hospital for mental and nervous disorders.1 He was persuaded by his mother, artist-muse Suzanne Valadon, to take up painting and drawing as a diversion from heavy drinking. Utrillo began painting intensely, producing 150 works between the autumn of 1903 and winter of 1904.2 Despite his personal struggles, he continued to work prolifically throughout his career, painting street scenes of Paris, particularly the bohemian Montmartre district. Utrillo’s work is characterized by a noticeable degree of impasto and vibrant colors, and at its best, displays a naïve vision with exacting detail. We wish to thank L’Association Maurice Utrillo for their kind assistance with cataloguing the lot. Exhibitions: Brooklyn Museum, Exhibition of Paintings by American Impressionists and other artists of the period 1880-1900, 1932, No. 93.

N.B. N.B. Theodore Robinson is considered one of America’s premier impressionists. Born in Vermont and raised in Wisconsin, Robinson studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design before heading to France in 1875. In Paris he continued to study both at the École des Beaux Arts and independently with Carolus Duran, and by 1877 his first work had been accepted at the Salon. From 1884 to 1892, Robinson divided his time between the U.S. and France, spending summers in Giverny where he was one of the few young artists to develop a friendship with Monet. In 1892 he returned permanently to the U.S. He settled in New York City, drawing subject matter from the city’s squares and parks, such as the painting at hand, as well as from the surrounding countryside in Connecticut and New Jersey. Robinson is credited with increasing the appreciation of French Impressionism in the United States. His style blended Impressionism with a deference to subject that did not abandon physical form to the pursuit of color and light.

This work is to be included in the forthcoming Theodore Robinson catalogue raisonné, which is being prepared by Sona Johnston and Ira Spanierman. $120,000-180,000

1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot.

2. All property is sold “as is,” and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability.

3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale.

4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale.

Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If any property has not been removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. (a) Skinner Inc., may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the three days, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser.

5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases.

6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale.

7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item.

8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots.

9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston.

10. Except for property purchased via on-line Live Auctions, a premium equal to 18.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the final bid over $200,000, will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the Buyer as part of the purchase price. The buyers premium on property purchased via on-line Live Auctions will be in the amount equal to 22.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus 15% of the final bid over $200,000.

11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.

12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalogue. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalogue, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent.

13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the nonexclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.
