Finley Pony Club Combined Training Day The Finley Pony Club Combined Training Day was held on Sunday 21 st April 2013 and attracted an impressive 54 entries, some who came from places such as; Tocumwal, Cobram, Deniliquin, Corowa, Jerilderie, Chiltern, Lavington, Howlong, Numurkah, as well as a good representative of Finley riders. The day kicked off at 9am with the dressage component beginning in Arena One, starting with the Grade 5 riders, later the Grade 4 riders. The second dressage arena began at 10am with riders from Grades 3, 2 and 1. The riders each had to memorise a dressage test and perform the moments in either a 40 x 20 or 60 x 20 metre arena. Dressage Judges were; Miss Adrianna Morris, Janette Morris and Mrs Tina Bell and the rings were pencilled by Julie Maconachie, Adrianna Morris and Janette Morris. The show jumping competition commenced in the ‘Helen Hendy’ arena at 10.30 am and provided an exciting spectacle, as the riders and horses attempted to negotiate a series of jumps, to try and achieve a clear round. The course, designed by Mr Kevin Hare of Deniliquin, provided the riders with jumping challenges to test the riders and horses’ courage and timing. The jumping judge for the day was Kathy Johnston and the pencillers were Kim Kelly and Kerry Lunn. The jumps were gradually raised in height, for each grade, until the very last exciting event, the Grade 1 competition, which saw Jill Lockhart and Shannon Kelly, two very talented local riders, pit their abilities against each other, in the final duel of the day, The crowd were all ‘on the edge of their seats’, as they watched the two horses fly over the incredibly high jumps in the exciting battle. The littlest riders were also catered for on the day, with them having their very own mini competition in the small sand arena, which began at 11.30am. The children were firstly presented with ten riding challenges, which were timed. The children could enter either the ‘led class’ or the ‘independent rider class’, in both Pony Club and Open sections. They then had to ride over six small jumps. A great deal of fun was had by all these younger riders. A big ‘thanks’ must go to the following members of the Finley Pony Club; Grace Ingram, Abbey Maconachie, Rachael & Jessica Butler, for judging and running this activity, the first time they had done so. The girls did a wonderful job. Above: Georgia riding Pixie grade five dressage test.

After the presentation of the ribbons, Finley Pony Club had one final surprise for all the riders and their families that had come along to support this wonderful day. A variety of prizes, ranging from hay bales, bags of chaff, jams, preserves, horse feed, grooming kits, halters, lead ropes, kids cooking kits, etc, had been kindly donated by Finley Pony Club parents, to be offered as a lucky dip prizes. All of the competitor’s numbers had been placed in a hat, in the form of raffle tickets and the tickets pulled out, one at a time and the lucky winners announced, to come and select a prize from the pile of available prizes. Great excitement was generated, each time, as the lucky winners were announced. The Finley Pony Club would like to thank all the competitors and helpers, who came along to help make this day a success, especially Mrs Leanne Williamson, who was our official Gear Checker for the

day and her husband Steve, her Penciller. It was a big and important job to help ensure all competitors were able to compete as safely as possible. Mrs Bronwyn Bourchier, our ‘Club Visitor’, was also on hand to offer support and also provided her wonderful ‘PA System’, to keep everyone informed throughout the day.

It was certainly a very successful and enjoyable day for the Finley Pony Club. The very next official Finley Competition will be held on the 15th of September, later this year, two weeks after the Finley Show, in the form of a ‘Games and Showjumping Day’. PCAV State Horse Trials The PCAV State Horse Trials were held in Deniliquin on 4th and 5th May. Shannon Kelly represented Finley Pony Club, competing in Grade 2. Shannon placed 9th out of 26 riders. Congratulations Shannon, an excellent effort. Shannon would like to thank Finley Pony Club for their support.
