Breathing Air Apparatus

The face mask and breathing valve are the central parts of the breathing apparatus. Itis their function and performance that determines under which conditions and withwhat degree of safety the equipment can be used. Primary design parameters aresafety, comfort and physiological requirements. The user must be able to breathefreely and feel no limitations, regardless of how hard he works.

The MaskThe mask body is made of easy to clean long lasting black rubber. The head harnesshas five straps. The wide sealing edge of the mask is pressed slightly against the faceby positive pressure and follows the contours of the face giving an effective seal. Aspeech diaphragm is standard on the Unipack face mask. The visor is made of polycarbonate but is also available in a laminated glass version. The Triplex visor has ahigh degree of chemical resistance.

The Breathing ValveThe positive pressure breathing valve LA 96-AS on the Unipack has a plastic housingwith an integrated diaphragm servo control. The LA96-AS automatically switches topositive pressure with the first breath.The connection to the face mask is by means of a plug connector. This assures safeand quick handling during use. According to the new SOLAS regulations the following will apply with regard to the need for EEBD units onboard:

All ships shall carry at least two emergency escape breathing devices within accommodation spaces; inpassenger ships, at least two emergency escape breathing devices shall be carried in each main vertical zone;in passenger ships carrying more than 36 passengers, two emergency escape breathing devices, in additionto those required above, shall be carried in each main vertical zone. (Regulations 13.3.4.2 to 13.3.4.5 -

certain exemptions apply see regulation 13.3.4.5).Furthermore under section 4.3 of the new SOLAS Amendment, Chapter II-2 governing Emergency EscapeBreathing Devices the following will apply:

4.3.1On all ships, within the machinery spaces, emergency escape breathing devices shall be situated ready foruse at easily visible places, which can be reached quickly and easily at any time in the event of fire. Thelocation of emergency escape breathing devices must take into account the layout of the machinery spaceand the number of persons normally working in the spaces.

4.3.2The number and location of the devices shall be indicated in the fire control plan required in regulation

15.2.4. (regulation 13.4.3, which refers to the Guidelines for the performance, location, use and care ofemergency escape breathing devices (MSC/Circ.849).)

1. Do I need EEBD's on my ships?

Yes, according to the SOLAS Amendment, Chapter II-2:

4.3 Emergency escape breathing devices

4.3.1On all ships, within the machinery spaces, emergency escape breathing devices shall be situated ready foruse at easily visible places, which can be reached quickly and easily at any time in the event of fire. The location ofemergency escape breathing devices shall take into account the layout of the machinery space and the number ofpersons normally working in the spaces.4.3.2The number and location of the devices shall be indicated in the fire control plan required in regulation 15.2.4.4.3.3Emergency escape breathing devices shall comply with the Fire Safety Systems Code.

2. What is an EEBD?

An Emergency Escape Breathing Device is defined in MSC 849 as follows:2.1An EEBD is a supplied air or oxygen device only used for escape from a compartment that has a hazardousatmosphere and should be of approved type.

3. Does the M-20.2 cylinder require periodic hydrostatic testing?No. Unlike larger cylinders used in compressed air devices, cylinders of the size used by the M-20.2 EEBD do notrequire any periodic hydrostatic testing.
