TokenizationTokenization is a process in which a debit or credit card’s primary account number (PAN) is replaced with a random numerical sequence that is unique to a specific device, merchant, transaction type or channel.

Data-at-Rest Tokens (Coming in 2015)Reduce the scope of PCI compliance by replacing PANs with tokens for the files that you store. For data-at-rest, First Data acts as the Token Service Provider (TSP), creating and maintaining tokens for your active accounts. These tokens are non-transactionable and replace the PAN for all files and reports sent from First Data. You will have the ability to access data to translate tokens back into PANs - real time or translate tokens back into PANs on an as needed basis.

Digital Payments Tokens Enabling game changing mobile device payment technology, Digital Payment Tokens are the future of mobile payments. Apple PayTM is the first device provider to pioneer Digital Payment Tokens, in conjunction with First Data and the Brand Associations. Consumers using Apple Pay transact with their token loaded iPhone® 6 (or other Apple Pay chip enabled device) instead of their plastic card at the merchant or when making an in app purchase. The use of Digital Payment Tokens eliminates the PAN from storage on the device or at the merchant, thus, eliminating the costly risk of PAN exposure when data breaches occur. First Data and STAR® offer a wide variety of options to enable Digital Payment Token processing.

Future of First Data Integrated Token Services Apple Pay is the first digital wallet to take advantage of First Data’s Integrated Token Services and they'll soon be joined by other wallets and merchants. Other providers are actively discussing leveraging the same token services as Apple Pay in the future. First Data will continue to build relationships with financial institutions, merchants and mobile providers to expand the breadth of card tokenization and digital/mobile payments. In 2015 First Data will become a TSP so that we can help expand card tokenization to other card types like commercial and private label that are not eligible to participate in digital payments tokenization today. First Data’s long term vision, for supporting digital payments, is to be a full service TSP so that our issuers can have a single source to manage both digital payment and data-at-rest tokens while also gaining direct control over the tokenization process.
