Day 1 of2 Grade: 1 February 23, 2016

Kimberly Alessio Subject: Math Time: 30 Minutes

Objective: The learner will show understanding of number concepts by finding the number that is one more or less and ten more or less by using a hundreds chart.

Bloom’s Taxonomy: Create, Analyze, Apply, Understand

NJCCCS:

I.NBT.5 I can explain how to find 10 more or 10 less than a two-digit number.

I.NBT.1 I can count from any number to 120. I can read and write numbers up to 120.

Opening:

1. Good morning boys and girls, we can use tools to help us in math. You all remember how we used a number line to help us count up and back for addition and subtraction. Today we are going to use a number line and a hundreds chart to count forward and backward by ones and tens.

Presentation:

2. The teacher will write the objective and the importance of learning this lesson on the board.3. The teacher will then call the students to the carpet.4. The teacher will put out the number line and have the students form a circle around it. 5. The teacher will pick on students and say a number and have the students go back one number

which is addition and back one number which is subtraction.6. After the students are masters at counting by ones they will go back to their seats.7. When the students are back at their seat the teacher will model the lesson then the students

will receive a piece of paper and one chip. The teacher will state “when you are working with higher numbers... a hundreds chart is like a bunch of number lines on top of each other. Show how to find one more or one less with hundreds chart.”

8. The teacher will call out numbers and have the students move the chip around, the teacher will monitor. The teacher will also show them how the number line is not helpful for 10 more or 10 less. The teacher will then explain how there are patterns on the hundreds chart that help us find 10 more and ten less.

9. The teacher will then demonstrate how we count by 10s...10 20 30 40... they are in a column. You move up and down columns to find 10 more and 10 less.

10. When the students are finished with the 100 chart they will then work on a worksheet.11. The teacher will work on two examples and have the students work on their own.12. They will then go over the worksheet together.

Guided Practice:

13. The teacher will do the “I do, we do, you do concept”.14. The lesson will be differentiated as needed. If there are any struggling students the teacher can

pull them aside and work one on one or in a small group. For higher level learners they can work on different addition and subtraction worksheets.

If the classroom consisted of technology I would use a SMARTboard and have the students come up one by one and fill it out an answer. However I did find worksheets off of a teacher pay teacher website.

Closure:

15. The teacher will then ask the students what they had learned today. (Anticipated responses) “We learned counting with the number line” (Summary of major points). The teacher will then clearly state the objective one last time.
