reflecting on the events of the past dozen or so months. As many of you know, though I have worked as a pastoral musician since high school, this is the first time I have been the full-time director of a large parish. Every day presents new challenges, and I try to learn something new from every experience, good or bad. Thankfully, for me, the experience has been overwhelmingly positive. The parish music program continues to grow, we have had several successful concerts, and there seems to be increased congregational singing at both the weekend and daily school masses. I am also happy to say that our Holy Week liturgies turned out beautifully (phew!). Our last major concert is an inter-parish choir festival on Sunday, May 18th at 4:00pm. In addition to our adult choir, we will host the choirs of St. Josephat, Holy Trinity Lutheran, and All Saints Lutheran (Palatine). The combined chorus will be about 75 members. It will be a fun, musical, and ecumenical event. Please consider joining us for this unique concert. Admission is free to all, free will donations will be accepted. It is easy to get caught up in all of the “how” that goes into music ministry, but we also consider the “why”. Music is described as “A cry from deep within our being, music is a way for God to lead us to the realm of higher things [Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship].” As we move forward and plan for the future of our parish music program, we must not only strive for a high level of musical excellence, but moreover, a focus on spirituality through music and liturgy. I believe that one truly begets the other. If our music is well prepared, prayerful, and of the highest quality, it feeds our spirituality and allows us to grow closer to the divine. I ask myself a question once every day to remind me of the true purpose of what I do: “How does this glorify God?” I sincerely believe that if we always ask ourselves this question, regardless of our ministry or profession, all else will fall into place. Blessings in the Easter Season!

Third Sunday of Easter

You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. — Acts 2:28The Journey

By: Jeremy Kiolbassa, Director of Music MInistry

Though I find it hard to believe, this Easter marked exactly one year since I was first introduced to St. Benedict parish. Though I did not start as music director until July 1st, I was the accompanist for the Easter overflow masses in the gym in 2013. The past year has

truly been a journey for me, musically, career-wise, and most importantly, spiritually. Today’s Gospel, known as the “Emmaus Story” speaks of the journey taken by two of Jesus’s disciples after his death and resurrection. This story is unique to Luke’s gospel. As the disciples walk to a neighboring village, they recount the events of the previous days. They no doubt discussed Jesus’ trial, torture, and crucifiction. The disciples had seen Jesus as a sign of hope for a new age and were disappointed to see his life come to what they assumed was a tragic end. Jesus joins the disciples as they walk, but they do not recognize him. This story can also be viewed as a metaphoric representation of the early

days of Christianity. The years following Jesus’ death and resurrection were very uncertain times for his early followers. With Jesus no longer physically with them, it would have been easy to think

that the best days had passed. But their faith was continually renewed

through reflections on scripture and the celebration of the Eucharist, and these Christians went on to build the great church that exists today. Like the two disciples in the Gospel, we may not always recognize Jesus when he first appears to us. He may appear in places and times when we least expect him. Today, especially in these uncertain economic times, our lives are often burdened by earthly things. Whether we are

faced with financial hardship, physical illness, or emotional pain, these trials may seem like the bitter end to what were once happy times. It can be easy to get stuck in the past and become lost in nostalgia when the future is uncertain. Like the two disciples, we need the guidance of Christ to help us interpret the past and move forward into the future. We can find this guidance in prayer, scripture, and the Eucharist. As we near the end of the academic year, I find myself

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul - Help Us Help OthersOn Pentecost, the Holy Spirit entered the disciples and they were brave enough to begin preaching the gospel to all nations. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul preaches to all peoples by demonstrating Christian love for all, regardless of their religion, ethnic origin or status, because the Society members see the face of God in the poor they serve. You too can become a true disciple of God by joining the Society. The Archdiocesan Chicago Council Society of St. Vincent de Paul serves Cook and Lake counties and has more than 3000 Vincentian volunteers operating out of 117 local churches. Volunteering for SVdP is a rich and rewarding experience. As a volunteer, you will benefit from the satisfaction of helping others, sharing your skills, and teaching others. Please call (312) 655-7182 or visit www.svdpchicago.org to learn how you can make a difference through membership, volunteerism or donations. Thank you and God bless.

The Common Pantry’s Most Wanted ListOur next food collection for the Common Pantry is May 17 & 18. Non-perishable food items as well as toiletries can be left in the St. Benedict Shrine on the third Sunday of the month. Items most in need include: Cereal, Tuna, Oatmeal, Chicken or Vegetable Broth, Canned Fruit, Easy Prep Meals (such as Rice-A-Roni), Pasta, Rice, Vegetable Oil, Pancake Mix, Dry or Canned Beans, Toothpaste, Deodorant, Bar Soap, Can Openers, Zip Lock Bags (any size). Help Fight Hunger in Our CommunityLooking around our beautiful neighborhood, it’s hard to believe

that some of our neighbors struggle to provide for their most basic needs. The fact is that every month an average of 300 households representing 1,100 people depend on The Common Pantry for food and personal care items. The Common Pantry offers qualifying clients monthly allotments of groceries, produce, canned goods, frozen foods and health and beauty supplies at no cost. A significant portion of the food distributed by The Common Pantry comes from individual and corporate donations. The rest is purchased from the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation, and local grocery stores. Our parish community supports The Common Pantry with a food drive every third Sunday of the month. Non-perishable items as well as toiletries can be left in the St. Benedict Shrine. Our next food collection is May 17 & 18. Your support of The Common Pantry is needed and appreciated. If you are interested in volunteering at the pantry you can contact them directly at 773-327-0553 or by e-mail at commonpantry @hotmail.com. Questions about our food collection contact Mike O’Malley at 773-509-3806 or by e-mail at [email protected].

National HIV/AIDS Awareness Days, May 2014Did you know that there are over 1 ¼ million people in the United States living with HIV? 1/4 of them DO NOT KNOW that they are infected with the virus.Stigma, discrimination and shame---these continue to prevent people from talking about HIV, getting tested or seeking treatment. If you do not know that you are infected with HIV, you could be spreading it to others. The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested. Free and confidential or anonymous testing is available in a community near you. To find the nearest site you can call: 1-800-232-4636, The National HIV/AIDS Hotline 1-312-948-6500, Catholic Charities or Visit:www.catholiccharities.net/hiv, www.hivtest.org,www.cityofchicago.org, Chicago Dept. of Public Health,www.cookcountypublichealth.org, Cook County Dept. of Public Health, www.health.lakecountyil/gov/Pages/Default.aspx Lake County Health Dept. May 18th is HIV Vaccine Awareness Day. Despite ongoing research, there still is no vaccine to prevent HIV/AIDS. This day is a great reminder for us to pray for the success of the thousands of people who are working to help find an HIV prevention vaccine. The disease has no cure. There is no vaccine to prevent it; and it will not go away! However, HIV/AIDS can be prevented!! For more information, please contact the Catholic Charities HIV/AIDS Liaison to the Archdiocese of Chicago at 312-948-6500.

ILLINOIS DISTRICT 12 LITTLE LEAGUE CHALLENGER DIVISION BUDDY PROGRAM

The Horner Park Little League Challenger Division is looking for “buddies” to assist our Challenger Players this season. Buddies help each player learn the game of baseball, improve fundamentals, and stay safe on the field and in the dugouts. More importantly, buddies help their players have a lot of fun playing baseball. The Challenger Division meets every Sunday at 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM beginning Sunday, April 20th and will hold its final game on Sunday, July 27th. We will not meet during Memorial Day or Fourth of July weekends. Games are played at Horner Park (on the corner of Montrose and California). The Buddy Program is a great way to fulfill service hour requirements, but more importantly, is a great way to help kids with physical and mental challenges enjoy the game of baseball. If you are interested in becoming a buddy, please contact Ryan Smith at [email protected] or 773.391.7123. Volunteer forms will be provided upon request. We appreciate your interest and are excited for the upcoming season. Learn more about past seasons at facebook.com. Search for Illinois District 12 Challenger.

The Challenger Division is a baseball league for children with mental and physical disabilities. In this league, each player has a

"buddy;" a volunteer who helps him/her learn the game of baseball and stay safe on the field. We are trying to reach out to area high schools to encourage students to join our program as buddies. We have found that high school-aged kids really get a lot out of becoming a buddy for our league. They learn a lot about themselves and help someone have a fun day at the baseball park. If you have any questions regarding our league, or any other general questions, please call 773.391.7123.

Continuation of the Bible StudyWe are happy to report that the Bible Study is going to continue thru the end of May. We have a great core group of attendees that want to continue. The sessions are engaging and interactive. You are sure to learn something that you did not know about the passion narratives and/or the bible. All are invited. You do not need to have attended earlier sessions. Jump in at any point. The schedule is as follows: - May 14 = Passion according to John - May 21 = Passion according to John - May 28 = Scripture and the Art of Lectio Divina The bible is so core to our faith yet so many Catholics know so little about the bible or how to read the bible. Please consider joining us for one or two sessions to enrich your faith.

Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection on May 11, 2014Juan and Maria are parents to two boys. They wanted to work to support their family but struggled to find a safe place for their children during the day. They found the Catholic Charities Cordi-Marian Child Development Center in Chicago and today their children have made new friends and are on track to be ready for success in school. Every day 1,500 children smile, learn and make new friends at one of 10 Catholic Charities child development centers. Please give on Mother’s Day to support Catholic Charities. Learn more and watch a video at www.catholiccharities.net.

Respect Life MonthBeginning on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11th, our church will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 36,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church next Sunday, May 11th, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of Father's Day, Sunday, June 15th. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers.
