WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O Lord, you have created us for goodness, yet we have ignored your teachings. Through sin we have perpetuated a world torn by violence, oppression, and strife. In this fallen world, hope is hard to muster. The seed of faith is small within us. Have mercy on us. Stir us, empower us, redeem us, so that we might move toward you and grow in the ways of faith, hope, love, and peace. We pray in Jesus’ name.

PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks

through despair, life breaks through death.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen.

* CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

* EXCHANGE OF PEACE

Leader: Let us open our hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to us, and God will be glorified.

People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

(Exchange Signs of Reconciliation and the Peace of Christ with your neighbor - e.g., “The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

Response - “And also with you.”)

THE WORD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

FIRST LESSON Lamentations 1:1-6

* HYMN 357 O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee Maryton

SECOND LESSON Luke 17:5-10

SERMON “Expected” Rev. Richard S. Hong

* NICENE CREED

We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE OFFERING

OFFERTORY Like as the Hart Herbert Howells

Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks: so longeth my soul after thee, O God. My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God: when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? My tears have been my meat day and night : while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy God?

Pastor: We take this bread and wine and joyfully celebrate this Holy Sacrament. ... And now, with the confidence of the children of God, let us pray:

People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

NOTES ON TODAY’S MUSIC

Olivier Messiaen (1908 - 1992) was a French composer, organist, and ornithologist. In 1931, Messiaen became an organist at the church of La Trinite in Paris where he worked until his death. His compositional style was very complex - he used Greek and Hindu rhythms, and specially designed modes of limited transposition. The most important influence on Messiaen's style was bird songs. He travelled widely, recorded,

transcribed songs of birds of various regions of the Earth, and used them extensively in his compositions "Le Banquet Celeste" (Heavenly Feast) is one of his earliest published composition (1928). Although the piece is only 2 pages long, it lasts about 7 minutes. This slow tempo is a symbol of the heavenly feast, which lasts eternally. Our choral pieces today are by three British composers of different eras. Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) was the most noted composer and keyboardist in England during his lifetime. Among other posts he was organist at Westminster Abbey. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was a leading symphonist of his time. His academic and church music credentials provided him the editorship of The English Hymnal. His interest in folk music can be heard in the melodic shape of today’s introit. Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was trained as an organist but poor health attributed to Graves disease prevented him from holding a church position. His whole career was spent composing church music and teaching at the Royal College of Music in London. Johan Albrechtsberger (1736-1809) was an Austrian composer, theorist and Kapellmeister at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. He is best remembered as being one on Beethoven’s teachers. Today’s postlude is an academic fugue on the Gregorian chant sung at the end of traditional Catholic masses “The Mass is ended, go in peace.”

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Lamentations 1:1-6 (NRSV) How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. 2She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. 3Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. 4The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. 5Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the LORD has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. 6From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer.

Luke 17:5-10 (NRSV) The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” 6The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this

mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. 7“Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? 8Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? 9Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’”
