Introduction to BusinessGBUS 5 OnlineI prefer to use online orientations to save a little wear and tear on your time. You can start, pause, resume, replay and fast-forward this video from the button bar below.

Welcome to the Gbus5 online course. My name is Myke Mc Mullen and Im looking forward to helping you achieve your learning goals this semester. After you have read this page, go ahead and move on to the next slide.

3As some of you may have already experienced, there are very definite pluses and minuses that come with distance learning. If this is your first online course, make sure your eyes are wide open to the minuses. In addition to the fact that learning online can be lonely and boring, your self-motivation will be severely tested. And the absolute most important element to your success will be, to paraphrase one of our favorite shoe companies, Just Do It. Get Started. Dont procrastinate. As you will see when you browse our website, all course components must be completed on calendar, just like in the classroom.

4I always feel a necessity to let everyone know upfront how I fit into the equation. For some reason, when we are in the classroom everyone seems to know their role, but when we get seperated by distance our roles seem to get fuzzy. As you notice in the slide, the column on the left gives you a very straightforward look at the scope of my responsibilities this semester. But as you see on the right, there are some things that Im definitely NOT.

Your (mother, father, husband, wife, children, boyfriend, girlfriend or pet dog) will probably be able to help you with the Internet or your computer better than I can.

I also am unable to read minds, so if you have a question, comment or complaint please express it in an appropriate manner.

PERSONAL TRAINER? Well, heres the reality. I have from 150 - 250 students per semester and it just becomes physically impossible to hold everyones hand along every step of the way. Youre the boss of your own destiny, take control. That doesnt mean that youre by yourself out there, but if you work things out for yourself you will have a better learning experience all the way through. If you still need to bring situations, then Ill be more than happy to help.

POLICEMAN? Well, honestly, this has to do with cheating. Im always asked by people, How do you keep your online students from cheating? My high-road response is that they are mature adults and they are here to learn. So who are they cheating? Themselves! And why would they want to do that?

On the other hand, my reality response is that I can eventually tell when someone is cheating and the punishment never fits the crime.1 strike and youre out! Why risk an F!

But mostly, understand that you have to PUSH yourself through the course. I can only help PULL you through. But together, we will both achieve our goals.

Written Business CommunicationsCourtesy, accuracy and professional standards are just as important in written communications as they are in oral communications. Traditional writing standards matterPunctuation, grammar, spellingTone and accuracyThoroughnessSignature6

6Although I know that this is a Business course and not a writing course, the ability to communicate effectively is an important facet of business and therefore it will be an important facet of this course.
