Chapter I

It was four o’clock on a Friday afternoon and I

couldn’t wait for the week to be over. The clock

mounted on the far end wall of the floor was ticking

louder by the minute. I was desperate, tapping a pen

against my desk, the tapping was so loud that my co

workers were starting to get annoyed by it, I knew I

was acting a bit too restless but there was no way to

shake off the awful feeling that something was

about to change in my life. I can’t explain how I

knew it but it was a nerve raking certainty and that

did nothing to atone the misery I was living or the

whirl of emotions tempting to shatter my over

rehearsed sanity, I was on the verge of panic and the

only thing that could prevent it from happening was

for the damn clock to strike four thirty! Suddenly

my friend Jane came by my office, if you could call

my 5 foot long cubicle an office, to talk with me

and let the thirty long minutes pass by a bit moreeasily.

“So, Laura, what are you going to do this

weekend?” she asked, almost cooing at me. See

Jane has this thing that she does when ever she

wants to get away with something it’s almost like

she uses a psychological power over you, it is a

shame that she is not a lawyer or a negotiator she

would be a shark among them.

It was not hard to answer that question; I knew that

like every single weekend I would spend it cleaning

up my already tight apartment.  Not much, I said.

Trying to sound as interesting as possible so that

she wouldn’t keep on bugging; But as I expected

she wasn’t going to give up the subject, so I took a

deep breath and waited for her mouth to open again.

“Really, and I’m supposed to fall for that?” She

said. “Come on Laura!” She was pouting; she

became childlike when ever she did that. “You have

to go out! Have fun! You know it’s not fair for you

Page 3: First Pages of My Book

to behave like that, it simply isn’t healthy!” She

enforced that last part.

I rolled my eyes at her, I knew what she was

planning and it wasn’t pleasant at all. I knew she

meant no harm, instead she was trying to make

something good for me, but I wasn’t up for such

games, not this weekend, not ever.

You know I can’t Jane, I said. I grinned at her,  I’m

busy.

She laughed at that and got up from her chair,

“cleaning up your apartment is hardly being busy!”

she said sounding as haughty as ever, “So it’s set

then, you are coming with me and Sean tomorrow”

What you and Sean?! I said; Great, I thought, the

last thing I wanted was to be the fifth wheel, but

apparently I had no choice. I shrugged my face indiscontent.

“Oh silly, we’re not the only ones going, Sean’s

friends from L.A. are coming with us!” She said

while cupping my face between her hands, and just

like that she went from a pouting child to a hovering

mother.

What? Oh no, no, no, I see were you’re going with

this and you are NOT going to make me! I will not

let you do whatever you’re planning on doing to

me! I said; I was so furious that she out of all people

who knew how I felt about dating was doing this to

me. I felt betrayed and back stabbed.

She came closer and grabbed my shoulder, gave a

sigh and said “I can’t let you do this to yourself, I

know you are afraid, but you have to try it, and if

you can’t do it on your own, then” she paused and

half smiled “well friends have to do some kind of

“intervention”” she said while making quotations

with her fingers.

I relaxed my shoulders and gave up; I knew I was

not going to win this battle, at least not with so little

time to run away. Ok , I muttered, but I must warn

you I’m not going to put up the “one brain cell

 girl” act, ok?

She raised her arms as in sign of victory and then

hugged me as if I’d given her the most exciting

news. “You’re going to love it; it’s the most

beautiful cottage in the middle of the woods! It’s

cozy and romantic, who knows maybe it all works

out in your favor!” She said giving me a wink.

Four thirty P.M. strike the clock and with that the

most boring week came to an end. Jane ran back to

her office while yelling at me “See you in a little

bit” she said. I knotted, I grabbed my bags, shut

down my computer, locked my drawers and off I

went. I couldn’t help thinking what Sean’s friends

must think of me, the “crazy” friend that can’t seemto fin a guy normal enough to keep.

I was about to leave the building when Sean yelled

my name, I froze, I didn’t expect to see him tonight.

I thought I was going to have at least one night to

mentally prepare myself for what was about to

come.

Hey Sean, I said. Sean is my best friend; we’ve

known each other since we were two years old,

basically he is like the brother I never had. We were

very close, so close that we could figure out what

was wrong with each other just by the sound of our

voices. I waived at him as I approached the car.

He smiled at me and patted my shoulder, “I’m

sorry” he said; I knew he was being honest about it,

because if there was something he couldn’t do was

lying to me.

I know, I said, as we kissed each others cheeks,  I’ll

kill her whenever I have the chance, I told him, andwe both started laughing; being with Sean always

made things easier for me; I knew that in spite of

his rather erratic girlfriend, he would never let

anyone or anything hurt me.

He opened the back door of his brand new Hummer,

helped me in and closed the door; he then got into

the car and started the engine. “Well ladies, here we

go!” He said while adjusting the car mirrors.

What? We can’t leave, I have no cloth! I said with a

high pitch note.

“Oh don’t worry about that” Jane said “Sean went

to your apartment to get you some”.

You did what? I snapped at Sean, slapping him in

the back of his head. Unbelievable! Ah! That is it;

you can kiss my spear key good bye! I said with a

frown on my face.

“Please don’t get mad at me Laura, like I said I’m

really sorry!” Sean said, almost pouting about it.

Whatever! I said, apparently there is nothing I can

do about your little “intervention” I just can’t

believe that aside from being set up on a blind date,

I’m going to be wearing cloth picked up by the one

person I know that lacks a sense of fashion. We all

laughed as in acknowledging the fact I just stated.

“Relax!” Sean said, “What is the worst thing that

can happen? I think nothing can get worst than

Francesco!” He laughed as he made that last part in

an awkward Italian accent.

I stood quiet thinking to myself. Francesco! He was

a piece of work, I thought, that mindless, stupid,

freaking Italian! I was nothing more but his ticket to

AMERRRICA! I laughed remembering the many

misadventures’ I had, all in the name of finding truelove. First was Michael who couldn’t find the

difference between a girlfriend and a maid. Then it

was Jose, the Spanish hunk wanted by the police in

seven different countries for drug dealing. And oh

Billy the guy who still lived with his mom and that

had the biggest Star Trek toy collection ever; he

used to dress up as Mr. Spock. I shook my hands off

in sense of disgust, looking at Sean through the

mirror as I said, Yeah, you are right, this can’t get

worse. We all shared a laugh for a while.

“Ok then” Sean said, “Get comfortable, because this

is going to be a long ride”

It was a rainy night; I was curled up on my bed

holding my pillow tight so that they couldn’t hear

me crying. I was looking out the window staring at

the rain drops hitting against the glass. It was windy

and loud but the silence of the night deepened the

pain burning high inside my chest, and although I

Page 10: First Pages of My Book

was surrounded by people I was as hollow and

alone as anyone could ever be.

As I rambled about different ways things could

happen, I started getting tired and more sudden than

I’d expected I was out, away in my sleep, dreaming

about the life I was never going to have. It was

 beautiful.

I was standing near the beach feeling the ocean

breeze blowing my hair away from my face, it was

fresh, peaceful. The sun was just starting to appear

through the mountain back at the east side of where

I stand, the sand was soft and I rubbed my feet

against it, it was a great feeling knowing that here

nobody could get hurt, that it was a magical place

where dreams finally came true. And then I felt his

hands rubbing my arms, I hadn’t noticed that

although the sun was already out, I was actually

very cold, but his hands where warm enough to stopthe shivers that ran through my whole body. It was

Page 11: First Pages of My Book

nice, safe, whenever he was around I felt

strengthen, fearless and complete.

“Hello” he said.

That was all it took for my heart to start pumping

fast enough to get propelled out of my chest. I

sighed and smiled back at him. He was beautiful,

too beautiful to be real, his skin was a tanned almost

a cinnamon color, his eyes where a shade of honey

green, his nose perfectly straight and center between

those gorgeous eyes. And his lips, oh his lips where

soft and the most intense reddish pink I’ve ever

seen in my life. He was strong, his arms felt like a

bear clutch around my minute body, but even so

they where as soft and tender as a baby caressing

your skin.

“What are you thinking about?” He asked.

“You worry too much” he said while kissing my

forehead, he placed his chin on top of my head and

gave a deep sigh. “And it is I who has to worry

instead, you have no idea how much I miss you

whenever you leave me, it’s nerve racking not

knowing if you will decide to come back to me” He

looked straight into my eyes, his eyes where so

piercing that it made me feel naked, but it wasn’t

weird, un contraire it was reassuring, as if we where

one person instead of two.

I looked at him trying to memorize his face

knowing that our time together was about to be over

and that timeless hours had to pass by before we

met again, I moved my fingers through his hair, it

was like touching silk and smelling lavender and

roses, then I moved my hands to his face it was soft

and smooth but it had sharp masculine features, his

jaw was tight as if trying to contain a swirl of aemotions, his lips where warm and yet they

Page 14: First Pages of My Book

trembled, but it was not quiet a shiver but more like

grief entrapped inside those tempting lips, I paused

right there and immediately stared back at him, his

eyes where closed, but a running tear was starting to

roll down his cheek, I kissed it away and held him

closer to me, our bodies intertwined in one

symphony orchestrated by the most amazing

director, music was flooding the air and the most

eloquent words ever written where inspired by us.

We held each other that way long enough to feel

like an eternity had gone by, the sun was now

setting and nighttime was making it’s debut, the

first stars where just starting to appear embellishing

the skies night gown, it looked like diamonds

decorating a princess dress. I could stare at it

forever, except that he was beside me and he

overshadowed any marvel ever created.

I turned and looked at him, it was time to say our good byes, this was hard, even harder than I could

Page 15: First Pages of My Book

ever prepare for, the pain inside my chest was

rising, burning higher with every second that passed

by, I didn’t want to leave, but it was inevitable,

staying could only be possible one way, and it was

not something to be even considered. I shrugged

and wrapped my arms around his waist, rested my

head on his chest, I could hear his heart beating

faster with every breath he took, that sound was

soothing and calming. I unfolded my arms from him

and placed my hands inside the pockets of my

pants, gave him a half smile and turned around.

He grabbed my arm trying to stop me, and reached

for my hands that where still inside my pockets, he

got one out and softly held it up with his warm

hand, and pressed his lips against the back of my

palm caressing it with the tip of his nose; he moved

away from it and touched my face gently. “I love

you” He said, then gave me a half hearted smile as

he turned and started walking away from me.

I woke up and found myself still in the car on our

way to wherever Jane and Sean were taking me. I

was still sweating from my forehead and had tears

in my eyes. I dried them away with my hands and

realized that I was shaking, I didn’t really know if it

was fear or excitement. I sat back up trying to get a

grip out of my retched soul.

That was a strange dream, I thought, and yet it felt

so real to me. I exhaled heavily and said to myself

that it was probably part of all this commotion that

Jane and Sean had come up with. I shook my head

and kept saying that to myself as if trying to believe

in it. I was so scared that it could be a revelation of

my heart’s true desire, I resented that thought, and I

was not going to let them overpower my sanity.

We finally arrived to the cottage and it was

beautiful, just like Jane had said. It was set in the

middle of a thick pine tree forest at the top of a

small hill. It was surrounded by gardens of freesiasand roses that you could even smell the scent from

Page 17: First Pages of My Book

8/6/2019 First Pages of My Book

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/first-pages-of-my-book 17/19

miles away. The house was made of dark wood

logs, old solid oak I dare say; it had a front porch

with two rocking benches and an outdoor fireplace I

could tell it was on because I could hear the fire

creaking already, probably because Sean’s friends

were already there.

I kept on examining the gorgeous house in front of

me; it had big windows in every single wall in order

to let you appreciate the forest around you.

I got off the car and started walking towards the

house and as soon as I got closer it made me feel at

home right away. The fresh but slightly cold

weather was pleasant enough as to make you want

to stay camping outside. But it was the house that

was appealing to me; it’s old solid looking way

made me wonder how many things this house had

witnessed, years upon years of changes in it’s

surroundings but most importantly how many

people could have left a mark on it and with it the

largest collection of secrets ranging from lies, sadness and hate to laughter, passion and forbidden

Page 18: First Pages of My Book

loves. And yet it was still intact and looking even

more beautiful as time passed by.

I felt envious of the house, I felt jealous of its

beauty, its strength but mostly of its glory, all

qualities I lacked and was never going to have, not

even in my wildest dreams. I got into the porch and

started walking towards the fire place; I found it

very strange how I felt there in presence of that

house, as if I had been there before. I got my hands

a little closer to the fire in order to make myself

warmer.

Suddenly Sean’s friend came out of the house.

“Welcome to my home” said a tall rather muscular

man.

“Hey Pete” Sean exclaimed, “Thanks for having us”

“You are welcome” Pete said. He then turned and

started walking towards me. “Hello” he said, “you

must be Laura” while extending his and towards

me.
