  • THE WORD

    Prayer for Illumination Grace Austin

Let us pray: Gracious God, we ask that by the power and illumination of the Holy Spirit, you would now shine through the darkness and light our way. Open our ears, our eyes, our minds, and our hearts to receive your word for us today. Amen

First Reading 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Pew Bible Page 963

Our first reading this morning comes from First Timothy, chapter 1. Hear now what the Spirit is saying to the Church.

I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service,

13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and

a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14

and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

    15 The

saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the foremost.

16 But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me,

as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life.

17 To the King of the ages, immortal,

invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Response Walk Together, Children Spiritual, arr. Moses Hogan

Florida Gulf Coast Chamber Choir, Dr. Trent Brown, director

Walk together children, don’t you get weary. Walk on, my children, don’t you get weary. There’s a great camp meetin’ in the promised lan’. Gonna walk an’ never tire, gonna sing an’ never tire, gonna shout an’ never tire, great camp meetin’ in the promised lan’. Oh, walk together, children, don’t you get weary. Sing on, my children, don’t you get weary. Just-a shout together, children, don’t you get weary. There’s a great camp meetin’ in the promised lan’.

Second Reading Luke 15:1-10 Pew Bible Page 850

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. 2 And the Pharisees and the

scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 So he told

them this parable: 4 “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave

the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 When he has found it,

he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and

neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ 7 Just so, I tell

you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

8 “Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them,

does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 When she has found it,

she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’

10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who

repents.” Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon Overflowing Grace Rev. Craig Goodrich

  • *Affirmation of Faith (The Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

    RESPONSE TO THE WORD

Prayers of Thanksgiving and The Lord’s Prayer Rev. Rex Childs Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Please pass the Friendship Pads so everyone in your row may sign in and so that you can see who is worshipping with you this morning.

Friends, in Jesus Christ we have received grace upon grace. In gratitude let us now give gladly to the work of God’s kingdom. We will now receive the morning offering.

The Offertory When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Gilbert M. Martin

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; Love, so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all! Amen!

*The Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen *Prayer of Dedication

Gracious God, we entrust these tithes and offerings and our very selves to you. Use what we give and use our lives for your work and for ministries of the good news, for peace and reconciliation. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

    Chancel Flowers

The Chancel Flowers have been given in honor of Marion Turner on her birthday

and by William Morgan in memory of his niece, Angela Ramseur Morgan.

The stories found at the very beginning of the Bible are some of the most theologically rich in the whole of the Old Testament. They are about the origin of the cosmos and seek to explain the relationship between the Creator and creation.

Of particular importance is the relationship between God and humanity as well as the role humans play in regards to the earth and all other creatures. In modern times, with vast scientific inquiry, how we read and understand these texts are vital to our faith and how we view these scientific endeavors.

We will explore these major narratives found in the early chapters of Genesis. The class is led by Associate Pastor, Rev. Rex Childs, and meets each Sunday morning before worship at 8:30 a.m. in the Chapel.
