Downtown Dayton is transforming itself into a hip, urban scene. People work, shop, eat and play downtown because they enjoy

the funky, trendy vibe, and they love to share the experience with guests. The PNC 2nd Street Market is no exception. Located in the historic Webster Station district, the Market is housed in a renovated railroad freight building. People from all over the county flock to the Market for farm-fresh meats, cheeses and produce; delicious prepared foods, including a variety of ethnic offerings; handmade gift items, such as scarves, soaps and pottery; and much more. They choose to shop the Market because of its unique atmosphere, family-friendly activities and the personal connection that happens when you purchase a handmade soap, tomato or loaf of bread from the very person who made it.

This is your invitation to be a part of this up-and-coming revitalization.

Be a Part of the Revolution

PNC 2nd Street Market patrons come from a culture that seeks out new experiences and has a zeal for sampling different customs. They are aware

about health and environmental issues, so buying produce and other local goods is important to them. Five Rivers MetroParks conducted a user survey in 2009 and from the data collected here are facts about your “typical” Market customer:

• Products that current shoppers are most likely to suggest to others include: produce, bread, eggs, flowers and prepared foods.

• PNC 2nd Street Market shoppers are focused on quality and variety over price. They are health-conscious, educated food lovers. They are looking for something different, done well and sold by small businesses that supports the local economy.

• Shoppers expect to have personal relationships with the vendors, and these relationships play an important role in why they choose to shop at the Market. They expect courteous, fun and social experiences – a feeling that the Market is a community in action.

• In terms of demographics, nearly half of shoppers are in the 40-55 age range, come from mainly urban or suburban ZIP codes in the Dayton region, are nearly twice as likely to be female and are middle class-to-affluent in income.

P NC 2nd Street Market vendors choose to belong to the Market family for a variety of reasons. The Market has been a successful business incubator

for former vendors such as Cannery Art and Design Center, Las Americas (South American cuisine), and Basically British. These hard-working men and women are passionate about sharing their talents with Market customers. Here’s a snapshot of who your potential fellow vendors are and what the Market does for their business:

• In a 2009 survey, 100% of vendors were satisfied with their experience of selling their products at the Market.

• 2nd Street Market vendors average over 200 weekly customers who say they shop the Market for its atmosphere and the personal connection they feel with the vendors.

• In a 2009 survey, nearly two-thirds of vendors indicated that the demand for their product met their supply on hand.

• About 30% of the vendors have been at the Market more than a decade.

• The peak produce season (May through August) are top visitation months at the Market; however, many vendors indicate that the holiday season (November and December) are top sales months, one of the benefits to being the region’s only year-round Market.

• About 44% of vendors surveyed in 2009 have increased their product variety and offering since opening, and 35% have product in retail stores and use their market booths to further promote their business. Several more vendors, such as Spice Rack and Bulk Foods, Big Sky Bread Company and The Wine Gallery, use the Market as a second location for their own retail establishments.

O ur mission is to support small, local entrepreneurs with a strong emphasis on food, agriculture, gardening and home decor in an atmosphere that

provides a comfortable and inviting gathering place for the diverse population of the greater Dayton area. Vendor selection is based on how the business supports the Market’s mission.

We are looking for the most dynamic group of local professionals that work as a community to serve the market customer the freshest, most diverse, ever-changing menu of prepared and grown food item selections unavailable elsewhere in the region for consumption on-site or take-home that utilizes market products when possible. We are not looking for flea market, rummage sale or bazaar-type vendors at this time.

All applicants will be screened by a panel of jurors to determine which potential vendors best encompass our mission. Applicants may be asked to provide samples of merchandise in advance of approval. The Market Jury has the right to reject any application.
