Oscar Wilde once said, “There isonly one thing in the world worsethan being talked about, and that

is not being talked about.” Theplaywright may have died over 100 yearsago but this statement remains asrelevant today as it was then. Theproblem is, in today's increasingly globalbusiness world, word of mouth will onlyget you so far. That’s why companies justlike yours are increasingly working handin hand with PR professionals to deliverkey messages to their target audience.

Picking the right communicationchannels is a crucial step and one that anexperienced PR consultant will be familiarwith. They will be able to guide youthrough all the appropriate mediachannels to create a strategic PR plan thatwill not only target the right market foryour business and the individual productsyou sell but also increase brand awarenessand sales leads - whilst creating materialthat can be used to assist positivecustomer reaction in future sale pitches.

PR is not only about promotingcommerce through the media. Whenused efficiently, it can be used by astutesales staff in your company as a newbusiness ice-breaker and is an invaluablemarketing tool which underlines that you

are a serious contender in the market andendorses your company's ethos.

Knowing who to talk to and when ishalf the battle. A good PR will havecontacts in different sectors of the media,be able to target the most appropriatechannels and provide what editors want, exactly when they want it. Taking controlof the day-to-day aspects of thecampaign leaves you free to get on withyour job, knowing all press requests arebeing taken care of.

Is this a job you could do yourself?Knowing and understanding yourproduct doesn't always put you in thebest position to publicise it; inventors -like those who are closest to a product -seldom know how to make the most ofits unique selling points. That's where animaginative PR consultant comes in.Information you may discard or take for

granted about your product or yourcompany can be gold in the hands of acreative PR and can open the door to acreative campaign that will work intandem with your objectives.

Just like having a plan for yourbusiness, your PR needs a strategy as well.Setting objectives should include setting abudget for their realisation. A good PRprofessional knows the cost and will helpyou maximise your budget and it'seffectiveness.

There is no substitute for beingproactive in PR because one piece ofpublicity, or one means of publicity, willseldom achieve the end result you want.Publicity takes time to work and the bestresults often come after much exposurehas been achieved. And there’s only oneway to know if your PR campaigns areworking: monitor your results. Ask newcustomers how they heard about youand regularly assess the results.

Don't wait for new business to comeknocking. Use the power of publicity andfind out how PR can help you win ordersin today’s increasingly competitive market.

We’re switching over toBonlex as fast as we can,”exclaims Richard Hagan, the

enthusiastic MD of Crystal Doors. “Weknew Bonlex foils were good 20 yearsago but we couldn’t get hold of them. Now we are buying them from Plasfilms.Plasfilms carry a very good stock andthey make sure they don’t run out.”

But it’s not just good availabilitythat’s encouraged the Rochdale-basedkitchen, bedroom and bathroom doorspecialist to make the switch. “We’vetalked to most of the foils people,” saysRichard, candidly. “They’ll come outand tell you their product is extruded,0.4, 0.5, 0.6mm or whatever. It doesn’tmatter. The test for any foil is how itpresses. Sometimes they’ll send you asix-metre sample and it’s fine on thepress. Then you’ll get a roll and find itdoesn’t perform with a particular kindof door. We’ve been working with

Bonlex for about six months and in thebeginning we trialled it with just onecustomer. Now we’re using it for all ourwork - doors, shopfitting, restaurantsand even an airline project.” Crystal’smost recent project has been 50 metresof foil-finished panelling with anincised, laser-cut pattern for a local bar.“We’ve had absolutely no problemswith Bonlex at all, whatever the job. Itperforms brilliantly.

“Customers are demanding softpostformed edges, square-cut and evenrouted, raised and fielded panel doordesigns these days and they expecthigh gloss doors without orange peeleffect. That’s what Bonlex gives us. Itforms very well around tight radii -even square-cut edges - and it doesn’tcrack. We haven’t found that with anyother foil.”

Crystal Doors has gradually uppedits order with Plasfilms from 200-metre

rolls to 1,000 metres at a time. Bonlexfoils applied with Henkel adhesives on arecently-commissioned Wemhönerpress are proving an unbeatablecombination for Crystal Doors with animpressive zero delaminations to date.

“We’re currently using Bonlex’sblack, white, grey, ivory and alabasterhigh gloss and we’re looking forward tousing some print designs as well,” saysRichard. “Pressing tests show these arejust as good but we haven’t taken on awoodgrain yet.”

There is one more ace from Bonlex:“The price is good,” says Richard, “Andthat always gets sales. It’s comparablewith others but the service we get fromPlasfilms is better than we’ve had, we getbetter performance from the productand our rejects have gone down.”

Bonlex is clearly tops for Crystal Doors- and that seems crystal clear.

Interior Film from LG Hausys is aproduct with so many applicationsthat its use is only limited by

imagination. Terry Hayden, theManaging Director of interiorrefurbishment specialists Pro AV DirectLtd, has found many uses for it inshopfitting and showroom displays. One of his company’s recent projectswas the refurbishment of DunkinDonuts in Cambridge. “The walls weregetting damaged and scuffed at lowlevel with chairs,” says Terry. “I’dconsidered panelling the walls but thatwould have been expensive. I’d usedDavid Clouting’s Interior Film before inone of their company showrooms upin Dewsbury and knew it was a greatway to get a nice-looking finish quicklyand easily which would also protectagainst damage and save on costs, so I

decided to use it on the DunkinDonuts project.”

After looking over several samplesprovided by David Clouting Ltd, theowners of Dunkin Donuts chose PineCubic (EL209) Interior Film (shownright) for the high wear wall areas.“Interior Film is very easy to use,” saysTerry. “You buy it in a roll, cut it, peeloff the backing and smooth it onto thesurface. It’s self-adhesive but becausethe adhesive remains tacky, it’s easy totake off and reapply if you don’tposition it perfectly the first time. It’s abit like applying wallpaper without thepaste and the problem of smoothingout loads of air bubbles.”

Durable and with a high resistance toimpact, abrasion and scratching, InteriorFilm can be applied to virtually anysubstrate from walls and doors to

Much has been done in recentyears to make life on the edgemore interesting. We’ve seen

perfectly matched edgebands, we’veseen contrasts, we’ve seen digitallyprinted patterning, high gloss, evenglass-look. But now, with Egger’s newcollection of ABS edging for melamine-faced chipboard panels, a new and quitedifferent style of edgebanding has beenintroduced that replicates the look andfeel of sawn timber planks. And it could- quite literally - give your furnituredesigns the edge.

Egger’s new edgebanding is calledEnd-Grain Edging. It’s designed to workwith 12 of Egger’s latest woodgraindécors and it takes realism to a newlevel. Elliott Fairlie, Egger UK's head ofdécor development, feels End-GrainEdging completes a picture. “As our

wood grain décors became more andmore realistic - particular our deeply-textured Feelwood synchronised porerange - we felt one piece of the jigsawwas still missing,” he told FurnitureJournal. “Being able to see the verticalgrain and detailing on the ends of theboard might seem like a small thing butit is this attention to detail and realismthat lifts this product above the ordinaryand makes all the difference to thediscerning end-user.

“Using standard edging on the longsides, with End-Grain Edging on theends finally creates an MFC panel that isreminiscent of real timber - fromwhichever angle you look at it.”

Egger’s 23 x 0.8mm End-Grain ABSedging is available from UK stock with aminimum order of just one 75m roll.

The next generation of Vollmer grinding centres is the CHC840 and CHC1300grinding machines, for the processing of saw blades up to 840mm and

1300mm diameters. The new CHC lines has four CNC controlled axes thatallow accurate grinding of virtually all tooth geometries in a single cycle -

resulting in improved blade quality and tool life. The CHC machines feature a new multi-function hand wheel that selects

and controls the axes through a single module, which avoids operator error andcan be used as a potentiometer to conduct adjustments to speed when in

automatic mode. The user-friendly qualities are further extended by a large 10”LCD display and large viewing window.

In addition to oscillating grinding as standard, the machine has a motordriven hook and clearance angle adjustment for a rapid changeover from faceto top grinding making the machines one of the most productive available for

sharpening carbide tipped circular saw blades.0115 949 1040 • www.vollmer-group.com

inside story

So many people learned their trade on famous British-made spindlemoulders you would struggle to count them. The attractions were clear:immense stability, robust design and great flexibility meant the highest

quality work could be produced on such machines. However, these machinesneeded one essential element - human skill. With the demise of the Britishmanufactured machines, users were in a dilemma. Should they stick withwhat they have or should they buy a low quality, mass produced spindlemoulder to replace the trusty workhorse? Not much of a choice really, withmany users hanging on to “old faithfuls”. Now, the Hofmann spindles range, available exclusively through Weinig UK, is a genuine replacement.

The TFS 1245 is just one machine in the Hofmann range that is charac-terised by quality German engineering at its best - but available for attractiveprices. The range extends from the entry level TFS 107 spindle right throughto the highly advanced award-winning spindle UFM Vision which comes withtop-of-the-range design and features. Hofmann also manufacture a range ofrobust planers and thicknessers targeted at users who understand and believein quality machines to produce quality products, making Hofmann productsthe “old faithfuls” of the 21st Century.

The large 815 by 1250mm table has a planed finish, not ground. Extensionsare available which increase the table length to 2750mm.

Jowat is inviting visitors to thinkdifferently at Ligna 2015 and reapthe benefits of better bonding, today

and in the future. What can youradhesive do and does it measure up?

Adhesives can do a lot more thanjust bonding. Those with electricalconductivity, for instance, can providea source of heat for a more comfortableenvironment, while sound buffering, permeability and conductivity arebenefits of some of Jowat’s morespecialised formulations.

Are you a user of hot melt adhesives?PUR Jowatherm-Reaktant® hot meltscan be supplied in standard granulateform and can be processed on thestandard edgebanders.

Jowat’s primers function as adhesionpromoters as well as being multi-functional all-rounders. When reactivepolyurethane adhesives are used theyfunction as an accelerator for the

crosslinking reaction. Sustainableadhesives for the manufacture ofupholstered furniture from Jowat’sJowatac® range are formulated withover 80% renewable raw materials, while for load-bearing structural timberapplications and solid wood bonding,Jowat improves performance andprovides easier handling as well asimproved quality in the final structuralcomponent. Among these are one-component PUR prepolymers whichprovide high-performance bonding andensure gluelines which are free offormaldehyde. Jowat’s EPI dispersionsoffer superior heat and moisture-resistance, reaching levels above thedurability class D4 in solid woodprocessing.

Can your adhesives do all of this? Ifnot, maybe it’s time to start thinkingdifferently. Call Jowat UK on 01782565265 or visit Jowat at Ligna 2015.

it’s a no-brainer

Under the motto “Think differently - better bonding“,new solutions will be introducedby adhesive specialist Jowat onstand B37 in hall 26 and standB61 in hall 12.

The characteristics of adhesives used in upholsteryhave to provide a long open time, a broad spectrumof adhesion, and superior initial strength. Jowat’snew generation of solvent-based adhesives fits thebill. Its thermoplastic and reactive hot melt adhesivesprovide a healthier environment when laminatingand coating mattress cover fabrics, in textilecompound lamination, mattress assembly and thelaminating of foam-based materials.

Traditional Sash Windows is verymuch a flourishing family business.Increasing demand brought the

need for a CNC machine capable ofgrooving, bevelling and machininghorns, draught excluding strips andsecurity bolt locations. It was felt a CNCmachining centre, with a 5-axis routinghead, would machine all window anddoor components in one location on theCNC’s table without loss of datum whenmoving components from one machineto another and, at the same time, would provide greater accuracy and abetter finish.

At SCM Group’s CNC manufacturingunit in Rimini, SCM UK’s Area SalesManager, Mike Lee arrangeddemonstration of the new Accord WDCell. The Accord WD Cell includes anautomatic component feeding andstacking facility and can be used forproduction in batches and in singleunits without interruption of the workcycle whilst maintaining maximum feedspeed (and without the continuouspresence of the operator). The 5-axismachining unit is supported by a rigidmobile gantry-type structure for fastprofiling of large section elements. Themachining area is 6360 x 1905mm and

machining takes place on one half ofthe table while the finished componentsare unloaded from the other half andnew ones are loaded. The worktable caneasily be accessed for manual loadingand unloading.

A 13kW, 5-axis Prisma T machiningunit ensures profiling of large sectionelements with fast feed speeds. SCM’selectrospindles (with HSK 63 E toolholder fixing) allow the use of tools oflarge dimensions and with doubleprofile ensuring ease of profiling onelements of a large cross-section. ARapid 12-tool tool-changer is adjacentto the 5-axis head while a 48-stationTRC rear tool-changer accommodateslarge dimension and heavy duty cuttingheads. Cutting, routing and boring canbe carried out vertically andhorizontally without needing the toolchanger using the 3kW machining unit(Type BRC). There is also a singlesecondary unit using an independentZ-axis and dedicated inverter. The twin

spindle horizontal head includes a two-spindle boring unit and a sawbladeunit. Matic ensures automatic worktableset-up in seconds and all the bars andsupports move simultaneously.Cleaning blowers remove all shavingsfrom the sliding zone and on thecomponent hold down base duringchanging of the clamps. The Accorduses Maestro WD parametric softwarewhich supports the designrequirements of the most commontypes and geometric shapes of linearand curved door and window frames.A simple and intuitive graphic interfaceguides the user through every step ofthe project all the way to creating themachine programs.

Chairman, Paul Kitching, concludes,”We are very please with the SCMAccord WD and can see the benefits ofthe machine, especially the quality ofthe finished components and themachining of rounded edges. At themoment we are set up for sashwindow production and eventually wewill move on to door production.”

Strong organic growth in themanufacture of bespoke, high-endfurniture, cabinetry and joinery

fuelled investment in a 28,000 sq ftpurpose-built manufacturing complexat Bill Cleyndert & Company Ltd, with18 woodworking machines on the floor,a new bespoke finishing department -and a new extraction system to copewith the higher workloads.

The existing extraction was fallingshort of standards. “There simplywasn’t enough draw and its workinglevels were falling behind,” explainsdirector Mandi Cleyndert. “We prideourselves on maintaining high levels ofmanufacturing quality and that, for us,

meant a new woodwaste extractionsystem to keep us in line with the latesttechnology.”

Investment, not just in new extractionbut also a bio-mass burner, came with apromise of significantly reduced fuel andwaste disposal costs for the next 20years. “We knew the level of investmentwould be big,” said Mandi, “Thereforethe equipment had to be right andinstallation prompt.”

Keen to use one company to overseethe project, Dustraction was chosen towork with heating specialist WoodWaste Technology Ltd to upgrade theexisting extraction and boiler. The twocompanies, which have worked

together on several large projectsbefore, installed a bio-mass burner andwaste disposal system in tandem with anew, made-to-measure dust and chipextraction system. Steve Matuska,Managing Director at Dustraction, designed the system and worked withCleyndert to create a solution thecompany could work with well into theforeseeable future. “Working alongsideWood Waste Technology, we created anew and bespoke extraction systemincorporating elements that remainedfrom the existing system,” says Steve.“One of the original 22kW fan sets, anexisting extraction main and some ofthe steel ductwork were all still in goodworking order, so we incorporatedthese elements into the design, reducing costs while still guaranteeingoptimal wood waste handling.”

Noise levels and suction wereCleyndert’s main concerns. “We wereable to introduce our new low-noiseimpellers into the mix on fans sizedspecifically for this project,” confirmsSteve. “Noise levels are significantlyreduced and new LEV air volume testsbased on the existing 450mm mainoperating at a velocity of approx25m/sec show that suction capacity hasbeen increased by 50 percent.Extraction is also dramaticallyimproved,” he adds.

New cloth filters from Dustractionalso provide a filtration velocity ofapprox 2.4m/min (6.7ft/min), withthree new automatic shaker mechanismsfor the removal of caked dust from filtersleeves - all controlled on a fullysequenced touch-screen HMI panel.

The system was installed in twophases and the Cleyndert team wasgiven training by Dustraction’s engineerson the use of the purpose-designedcontrol panel and filters. “I wasexpecting teething problems becausewe were integrating new with old,” saysMandi, “But I’ve been pleasantlysurprised. It’s all very simple to use andthe shaker cleaning is fuss-free.”

Steve sums up: “At Dustraction, wedon’t believe one size fits all. We createdust extraction systems to far-sighteddesigns and we aim to forge lastingpartnerships with our customers withan eye on the future. We’re proud tosay that we manufacture bespokesystems to new designs here in ourLeicester factory and we offer a loyalservice to our customers, many ofwhom we’re still working with 40 yearsand more down the line… “
