FLORIDA ARTIST~ GRoup·
1949- 2000 The 50th Anniversary
PURPOSE The Florida Artist Group was Incorporated as a non-profit organization of practicing artists who had gained recognition nationally or state-wide and whose work would contribute significantly to its exhibitions. The purpose of the group is to stimulate attainment of the highest standards of creative art within the State of Florida.
ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM Since 1949, the Florida Artist Group has held a symposium and a member's exhibition each year in a different Florida city. Education and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions and films.
In addition to the Symposium and Exhibition held in the Spring, area exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows, in a small way, the character of the Spring meeting. They also serve to bring the members of the organization more closely together.
JURIED SHOWS The annual exhibition is juried for awards. The organization always brings in an eminent juror who is primarily associated with art administration, education or a painter or a sculptor of national repute. Past locations of exhibitions have included the Norton Museum, the Ringling Museum, the Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami Metropolitan Museum and the Lowe Museum, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences and many other outstanding galleries and art centers.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Thanks to the camaraderie of all our members the 501h Anniversary Symposium was a great success. Thanks to the eloquence of Fred Messersmith we were informed of the significance of FL.A.G.'s past, particularly the traveling shows. Thanks to the creativity and imagination of our artists the 501h Anniversary Exhibition is exciting visually. Congratulations to all the award winners.
I am grateful to so many people for their help and support: Ron Bishop, Curator of the Edison Community College Gallery of Fine Art for preparation and installation of the exhibition. Janis Balaban and Elizabeth White Cochairmen of the Symposium. Mary Keogh and her husband for the delightful Friday cocktail party. The members or the board, particularly our Treasurer, Shirley Frank and Roberta Schofield. All our Award donors who have contributed so faithfully through the years. A special thanks to those members who responded to my late night phone calls.
It has been my pleasure to be president during our 501h Anniversary year. I look forward to our Symposium and Exhibition in Tallahassee next year. Cecily

JUROR'S STATEMENT:
Upon viewing the 501h
Anniversary Florida Artist Group AnnualExhibition, I reflected on other regional shows I have judged. What stood out in comparison was the consistent quality and professionalism of the FL.AG. works. In this show every piece has the mark of a serious, creative and successful work of art.
The process of judging was not easy, because it was difficult to evaluate the various elements, composition and content that enabled the award winners to distinguish themselves from the other quality works. Other than the nine receiving awards highlighted in this catalogue, there were numerous to which I could have easily given honorable mention. Many pieces rank strongly with the award winners.
The show reflects the changing media of some artists in what could be considered a traditional show. Although mostly painting, watercolor, acrylic and oils, there were strong entries in the area of digital imagery, which by necessity are primarily prints. This wide use of new techniques is a positive sign in a world where art is changing as fast as the other elements in our society. The FL.A.G. should have a great future and I wish you well for another fifty years.
