The nexus is the point at which two or more of four major IT forces converge to create new patterns of outcomes in technology use, business reality, market dynamics and changes to the lives of people. The Nexus of Forces Works Its Way Into the EnterpriseGartner September 2013

Page # 2013 FNT GmbH All rights reserved.About the Nexus of Forces

The Nexus of Forces is the convergence and mutual reinforcement of social, mobility, cloud and information patterns that drive new business scenarios. Although these forces are innovative and disruptive on their own; together they are revolutionizing business and society, disrupting old business models and creating new leaders. The Nexus is the basis of the technology platform of the future. We have a strong growth story for the datacenter and connect systems group because the underlying drivers are dynamic and compelling:

Gartner Group published a report in June 2012 regarding the Nexus of Forces: social, mobile, cloud and information. As a result of consumerization and the ubiquity of connected smart devices, peoples behavior has caused a convergence of these forces. Gartner also flagged a warning to all IT leaders at their annual Symposium/ITxpo 2011: Their existing architectures are becoming obsolete!!Whats happening in this convergence of social, mobile, big data and cloud?Big Data is the context for delivering enhanced social and mobile experiences. Mobile devices are a platform for effective social networking and new ways to work. Social links people to their work and each other in new and unexpected ways. And, cloud enables delivery of information and functionality to users and systems. The forces are intertwined to create a user-driven ecosystem of modern computing.

Million 350new Photos on Facebook Each DayPage # 2013 FNT GmbH All rights reserved.Facebook Users Are Uploading 350 Million New Photos Each Day

Facebook revealed in a white paper that its users have uploaded more than 250 billion photos, and are uploading 350 million new photos each day. To put that into perspective, that would mean that each of Facebook's 1.15 billion users have uploaded an average of 217 photos apiece. These numbers do not include photo uploads on Instagram.

Facebook is the world's largest photo-sharing site, and the acquisition of Instagram solidified its place at the top of all photo-sharing activity on the Web. However, Snapchat, despite being much smaller than Facebook, has proven to be a serious contender and drives incredible photo-sharing volume. Snapchat has also reported that its users share an average of 350 million photos daily.

5Mobile takes overConverging Technologies: one comprehensive data model for OSS and IT automation

6BillionSubscribersby 201619BillionCONNECTED DEVICESPage # 2013 FNT GmbH All rights reserved.Mobile phones are already well on their way to replacing cameras, cash, maps, remote controls, handheld gaming systems, boarding passes, tickets, cash registers, calculators, notepads, and much more. And theyre becoming globally ubiquitous: with over 6 billion subscribers, 1.6 billion phones were actually shipped last year; and by the end of this year, 1.4 billion smartphones will be in use.Mobile platforms will catalyze next-generation connected experiences.

Per Cisco: The proliferation of tablets, mobile phones, and other smart devices as well as machine-to-machine (M2M) connections are driving up the demand for connectivity. By 2016, the forecast projects there will be nearly 18.9 billion network connections compared with 10.3 billion in 2011. By 2016, there are expected to be 3.4 billion Internet users about 45 percent of the world's projected population (7.3B). Works out to 2.6 devices per person or 5.6 per internet user. Advanced economies will be above this average: A report from the OECD on the internet of things estimates that a family of four will go from having an average of 10 devices connected to the internet now to 25 in 2017 (6.25 per user)

On the intelligent systems side theres a very wide range of estimates on the device to server ratio. In energy, we have pilots in which intelligent systems are placed in the energy substation to optimize and balance energy in real time at a local level, while servers aggregate and analyze data across the entire energy grid. In this case, there is about 1 server for every 65 intelligent systems at the edge. Digital signs and kiosks drive 1 server for every 20 devices. Other high end example digital camera = 6:1 ratio for facial analysis.

5EXABYTESOF DATA CREATIONtook1000 YEARS2YEARS10MINUTESin 2003in 2011TodayPage # 2013 FNT GmbH All rights reserved. For years, technologists have discussed the ubiquity of information without realizing how to take full advantage of it. That time is here now!Social, mobile, cloud make information accessible, shareable and consumable by anyone, anywhere, at any time. Knowing how to capture the power of the ubiquity of information and use that information at the right time, will be CRITICAL!It took 1,000 years to create 5 Exabytes of data by 2003. Today, it takes 10 minutes!Big data is a business driver, not just an IT driver.

Big Data:It is said that over 3 Trillion will be spent in IT by 2016. One big growth factor is Big Data! The overall market for Big Data technology hardware, software and services is projected to increase to $23.7 billion by 2016, from $8.1 billion last year, according to IDC

More than 75 percent of midsize to large businesses are implementing big data-related solutions within the next 12 months with customer care, marketing and sales departments increasingly driving demand, according to new Microsoft Corp. research (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/Press/2013/Feb13/02-11BigDataRoundupPR.aspx)

Per Morgan Stanley CIO survey: 34 % of surveyed CIOs expect to increase analytics spending over the next three years (vs 13% that said they would decrease analytics spending)

Major trends in client computing have shifted the market away from a focus on personal computers to a broader device perspective that includes smartphones, tablets and other consumer devices.Emerging cloud services will become the glue that connects the web of devices that users choose to access during the different aspects of their daily life.

Cloud: Gartner estimates total cloud services spending at $200B in 2016 is more than double that of 2011 ($~90B). Global cloud IP traffic will increase six-fold over the next 5 years. Global cloud IP traffic will account for nearly two-thirds of total data center traffic by 2016.
