AnthropologyatKbenhavenUniversityasanexchangestudentfortwosemesters20112012 InterestedindanishdocumentaryandfollowingDocumentingcomplexities,visualanthropologycourse,coordinatedbySinePlambech WORKED JURNALULNATIONALnewspaper/september2006-april2008staffphotojournalistWorkingatJurnalulNationalmeant,besidesshootingregularnewsphotography,travelingaroundthecountryforstoriesaspartofatwomanteam:editorandphotographer.Thestayswereveryshort,persubject,one,two,maximumthreedays.Itwastooshortforin-depthdocumening.Thisexperienceaugmentedmyinterestindocumentaryphotographyandpeople.SuchitwasmotivatingthatichosetopursueanAnthropologyMastersDegreewhichwouldgivemetheopportunitytobetterunderstandtheprocessofproperdocumenting.Atthesametime,afterstudyingoptoelectronics,ihadverystrongtechnical/practical/analyticalskillsthatallowedmetoeasilyunderstandallhardwarerelatedissues

/motivation/

Iamparticularlyinterestedinapplyingforaninternshiporfindingworkinthefieldofvisualanthropologyordocumentarybecauseiwanttofocusontopicsthatconnectwellwithmyinterestsandthestudyprogrammeinanthropologyatmycurrentmastersdegree.Also,inDenmarktherehasbeeninterestindocumentariesandothermixed,artanddocumentaryfilms,andtherearepeoplewithalotofexperiencethaticouldlookuptoandlearnthingsunavailableinmyhomecountryRomania.

AlthoughIstartedbystudyingoptoelectronics,inmysecondyearofstudies,beingfondofastronomyandphotographicequipmentsinceIwasakid,Igotajobshoot-ingnewsforJurnalulNationalnewspaper.IsoonbecameinterestedinpeopleandstoriesandsoIstartedlookingforsomethingtocultivatemy,atthetimerecentlydiscovered,fondnessofthedocumentingprocess.GiventheopportunitytoworkwithphotojournalismprofessionalsIstartedtolikecoveringnewsandworkingaspartofateamwiththerestofthephotographersatJurnalulNational.TheteamwascomposedofaboutadozenphotojournalistswithgreatexperienceandIstartedtolearnveryquicklythewayIhadtoshoot,selectandcombinephotographstohavearelevantstory.AtthesametimeIhadtogoaroundthecountrytofollowsomestoriesaspartofatwomembereditor/photographerteam.

Thedocumentaryorientedtripsweretooshorttobeabletothoroughlyfollowthesubject.AtthetimeIstartedthinkingaboutstoriesandtheneedofin-depthdocumen-taryandtheproperwaytodoit.Workingwithanewspaperrequiresaveryfastworkflowandyoutendtoleaveoutsomeimportantdetailsthatyoucouldntacquireinatwodaystay.Ithendecidedtolearnmoreaboutdocumentary,peopleandplaces.Theeditorialteambeingverylargeandcoveringallkindsofstoriesmademereallytakeinterestinnewsandthepolitical,economicalandsocialchangesinadevelopingcountrysuchasmineandthestreamofimagesthataccompaniedthosechangesandalsodocumentariesandfilmsthatrelatetopeople.

Beingself-motivated,IknowthatIneedcontinuousworktoimprove.Confident,butopen-minded,Ihaveanout-goingpersonalityandIdealwithproblemsinanas-sertiveway:beingcreativeinidentifyingsolutions,keepingmycalmandusingmypracticalknow-howindifficultsituations.Myanalyticalabilitydoesntminimizemyspontaneityandmysenseofhumor,whenitcomestointerpersonalcommunication.IliketolearnalotfromthepeopleIknow,sharingatthesametime.

Ihopeyouwillconsidermeforapossibleinternshiporvoluntaryworkasthisisavitalexperienceformyeducation.

AfterjoiningtheEuropeanUnion,theromanianauthoritieswereobligedtosolvetheproblemofchildrenhomes.Thereintegrationinthenaturalfamilieswasoneofthemethodchosenandalotofchildrenweresenttotheirparentswithonlyasetofclothesandwithoutanypriornotice.Usuallywithpoorsocialbackground,thesechildren,someafterfiveoreventenyearsofseparation,didnotreceiveawarmwelcomeathome,beingaburdenfortheiralreadyim-poverishedparents.Infouryearstherewerealmost15000childrenreintegrated.

Bogdan,12, is seen here atschool in Livezi, Bacau coun-ty.HehasbeenstayingattheBacauchildrenhomesincehewas7.Theparentssaythatoneofthemainreasonforkeepinghim inschool is to receive thestatechildrenallowance.

ThisisBogdansfamilyhomeinLivezivillage.TheparentsformerlyworkedasmanufacturersinafactorynearBacau,butasitshutdowntheyhadtocopebyworkinganykindofjobsthattheycanfindinthearea.

Bogdan is preparing to go outside and playwithafriendthatwascallingforhimatthewindow.

Andrei,17,isbackwithhisnativefamilyinHorgetiafter7yearsofbeingintheBacauchildrenhome.Hismotherandyoungerdisabledbrotherarehisfamily.Sheworksany agriculture related jobs to feed herfamilyandshenowneedsallthehelpthatAndreicanoffer.Be-cause of this,Andrei cant go toschoolandhastoworksidebysidewithhismother.Lifeisveryhardin themudcottagethat theyownandresourcesareveryscarce.

The younger brother muststay at home becausehis mother does not haveenoughmoneytosendhimdaily to Bacau, 30 kilome-tersaway,toaspecialfacil-itywherehecouldbecaredfor. She only gets a verysmall amount of moneyfromthestateasapension.

BogdansmotherstaresacrosstheyardasshetalksaboutthewaythatAndreiarrivedhomeoneday,aftersevenyearswithonlyonesetofclothesandsomeinspectorthatgavetheokforhersonsreintegration.

Inspring2009theBucurestisubwaycompanywasworkingonreplacingmostofitsaging,1975made,rails.Eventhoughmostofthemachinerywasworkingautomaticallywithjustsomeminorassistance,theprocessofunloadingtherails(some120mlongandweighingasmuchas6tons)andplacingthemwasmainlymanualhardwork.Itwasagoodoccasiontolookunderthecityatthesepeopleworkingeverynighttokeepthesubwayrunning.Theworkstartedat2330eachnightandendsat0500whenthefirstrailcargoesonlineanditsaverybusyschedule.Therewerespecializedteamsworkingonrailcars,rails,electric,mechanics.Iwentembeddedwiththeraildivisionbutalsoshotsomeotherteamsworkinglateinthetunnels.

The team is unfastening bolts toremove the piece of rail that isdamaged. Because of the smallspace in the tunnel powertoolslargeenoughforboltremovalarevery difficult to handle, so all the workisdonebyhand.

Flaresareseenherebeinggeneratedbythemachine that cuts away the rail.Theheatandfinedustgeneratedaffectmostof theworkers that dealwith railmainte-nance. The ventilation during workinghours is stopped so that workers dontcatchcoldsbecauseofsweatinganddrift.Theairisveryhotandfeels,attimes,hardtobreathe.

The operator of the cutting machine isseenheretakingabreakandsmokingacigarafterthefirstcutoperation.

Workersuselargepincerstoremovetherailandreplaceit.Theyworkinpairsandhavetobeverycarefultobeinsync,toavoidbackinjuries.Piecesof lineweigh60kilogramspereverymeter.

Afterplacingthenewpieceofrail,aspe-cialist reconnects the linkagesbetweenthe rails and gives the approval for clos-ingtheline.

TwomembersoftheTunnelsandrailsteamarescrubbingafteranightofwork.Usuallyalltheirgearandthemselvesarecoveredinafinemetallicdustthatishardtoputoff.

At0500hourstheteamisbackatrailheadquartersandtheirshiftisnowover.

Asaresultofthechaosensuingthe1989revolutionandthedegradingofthechildrenhomessystem,thatwasactiveduringthecommunistpe-riod,inBucurestitherewereanalarmingnumberofpeoplethatlivedonthestreet.Occasionally,thepoliceevacuatesthesewersthatareshelterforthehomelessinthewintertime.Afterreceivingashortmedicalconsulttheyarereleasedandsomeofthemintegratedinthestatesshelters.Theretheyhavetolearnanddosomeworkstogetfoodandaroofabovetheirheads.Sadly,manypreferthelifetheyhaveinthesewersandthinktheyadaptedsowelltoitthatisfutiletostayinthestateownedsheltersandtheysurvivebystealingordoingsmalljobs.
