What  it  is  about?  Introduction At St. Catherine’s High School, we are developing dual learning pathways at the Junior School level. This initial pilot project will involve the creation of a Sports' Academy (initially Football) for the Junior 5 and 6 students. This will be an optional programme and students joining this programme would have an hour of football training (and tutorial lessons) every day during school hours and then continue with mainstream learning during the remaining school hours. The idea is to provide learning vocational pathways for children at this age which they could then continue throughout their compulsory education journey.

Benefits It is estimated that this programme will help students by:

• Improving their football (sports) education;

• Introducing them to Vocational Education and Training;

• Increasing their career options in the future;

• Improving their learning aptitudes;

• Improving their focus in the other academic areas.

Who is this programme for? This programme is intended for all those football enthusiasts who would like to further their knowledge, competence and physical training. It is aimed at boys and girls in the Junior 5 & 6 (October 2015) and will be the first Football Academy to be set up during School hours. Participants will be able to do this while still following the mainstream curriculum (although they will necessarily miss 2 lessons a day of subsidiary subjects). Students following this programme will be affiliated with SCHS but will still be able to continue their football training with their respective clubs/nurseries in the evening.

Who will run this programme? The programme will be run by St. Catherine’s High School. Qualified coaches/sports psychologists/experts will be called in to run the sessions at School (for the tutorials) and at Luxol Sports’ Ground (for the practical sessions). The programme’s curriculum will be drafted by Mr. Renzo Kerr-Cumbo, a PhD student with the University of Sheffield and an MCAST lecturer in Sports as well as a Football Coach himself, in collaboration with the School. Although the programme forms part of Mr. Kerr Cumbo’s PhD study, it will be an integral part of the School’s curricular programme and assessments will be held periodically and assessment grades/marks reported on the School Progress Reports (Mid-Year and Annual).
