Renkowski who claims to have been quilting for 100 years. We certainly hope to see most of you returning next month. Speaking of July, it's that time of year again, time to join as a new member or to renew your membership. Our annual dues continue to be a bargain at just $20. Checks may be made out to Foothills Piecemakers Quilting Guild or FPQG, or you may pay with cash. In order to expedite the process, I will once again have an envelope for each renewing member with the contact information we have on it. You will be asked to confirm that the information continues to be accurate and to return the envelope to me with your dues inside. There usually is a bit of a traffic jam at the membership table during this time, but we will try to minimize the delay. You can expect to have your new membership card by the end of the meeting. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! You actually have until the September meeting to renew and still be included in the new membership directory, but why wait? Join or renew early and often! New and soon-to-be new members, remember that we will have a new member social for you before the September meeting, just for you. Stay tuned. Sue Burton Membership Chair Opportunity Quilt If you haven't picked up your 10 tickets yet for the 2016 Opportunity Quilt please do so at the next meeting. Tickets can be picked up next to membership. If you choose not to sell, I would greatly appreciate you just letting us keep your tickets to save us from having to print extras. If you would like more tickets than 10, just ask! Also, if you know somewhere to display the quilt or want to take the quilt somewhere to help sell tickets, just let me know!! Thank you! Kristin Kipper Corresponding Secretary As our new year begins, please let me know if anyone in our guild is in need of a card! Thanks! Kristin Kipper Carolina Cut Ups The Carolina Cut Ups Quilting Bee meets the first Wednesday of every month beginning at 9:30 a.m. Bring a project to work on, a lunch (or some members go out to eat), and a $1 contribution (collected at each meeting). BLOCK OF THE MONTH – Nicole McClelland Quilters, I have been waiting to make a ‘purse string’ block quilt, since I saw it on Kelly’s blog ‘Quilt Infatuation’. I asked her permission to use this for FPQG block of the month and she was very happy for us to use it. She has 3 different sized finished blocks. The size we will use is 12” finished block size. The colors are citrus inspired. Think pink lemonade or pink grapefruit (pink, orange, and yellow). She has a great tutorial and fabric requirements at http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.com/2013/09/purse-strings-block.html. For those of you unable to connect to this tutorial, here is the abridged version of her instructions: To make a purse strings block, cut four 4.5 inch squares to make the "purse flaps," four 4.5 inch squares to make the "strings," and one 4.5 inch square for the center of the block, or the "inside of the purse." This center square would be a great place to use fussy cuts! You will also need sixteen 3 inch squares of white fabric (your background fabric or corner squares). We are using only three fabrics plus white. First, we'll make the four "purse flaps." These surround the center square, so if you have a stripe, chevron, or other design that would look cute in a radiating pattern, go for it. Draw a line diagonally on the back of the white fabric. Place it in the corner and sew on drawn line. Trim ¼” away from sewn line and press. Repeat this step in the adjacent corner. Repeat these steps for all four "purse flap" pieces. I promise, once you get the hang of it, it goes really quickly, and the end result is worth it!

The points on these don't go all the way to the edge of the block (unlike flying geese), and that's by design. When the blocks are all put together, it creates a great shape in the negative space! Now, we'll use the same technique to create the "drawstring" parts of the block, better known as a Road to Tennessee block. These are a little bit quicker because you won't have to press until the end. Start by lining up a white square on top of your printed fabric and again, sewing corner to corner and trimming the excess. Don't worry about pressing this just yet! This time, our second white square will be sewn to the opposite corner, rather than an adjoining corner. Sew the second piece and trim. Your piece should look like this.

Now we're ready to press! Be careful not to drag the iron too much or you'll distort your corners!

Repeat for all four “drawstring” pieces. After all of that, the rest is really a snap! Lay out your blocks like this- Do you see the purse and strings shape?

Sew them together as you would a plain old nine patch. Press all seams in one direction and voila! A beautiful Purse Strings block!
