For this typically highly-resilient and passionate person, 2018 was a particularly challenging

year professionally, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Mentally, I went to a dark place

driven largely by unanswered questions and a high degree of curiosity.

There are over 200 books in our office library ranging from all things coaching and business-

related to books on creativity, emotional intelligence and intuition – so much to share. So, what

me through the darker times actually become quite cathartic.

The quotes are categorised into eight sections which, dependent on your own mood, mindset

and wants, might help you get to what you need.

The spiritual journey is the relinquishment or unlearning of fear and the acceptance of love back into our hearts” “Forgiveness is not always easy. At times, it feels more painful than the wound we suffered, to forgive the one that inflicted it. And yet, there is no peace without forgiveness”

Education, knowledge and wisdom

“Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with

diligence.” ― Abigail Adams

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

“The educated differ from the uneducated as much as the living differ from the dead.” ― Aristotle

“A fondness for reading, properly directed, must be an education in itself.” ― Jane Austen

“Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy”. Ludwig van Beethoven

“Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never

been loosened or fertilised by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.” ― Charlotte Brontë

”Teach your children how to identify their own strengths and challenge them to contribute these

strengths to others.” – Marcus Buckingham

“It's important for a parent to learn to take delight in a child whose behaviour might seem

mystifying. In the case of an extroverted parent with an introverted child, it can be learning to see the inner

riches of your child that may not always be expressed on the surface - but are there.”

“We need to do teacher training to educate them about what temperament means. Shyness is painful and

you want to help a child with shyness - but the underlying temperament of being a careful, sensitive person is

to be honoured, valued and respected.”

“One thing I'm hearing a lot is from teachers who have felt that there's something wrong with the extreme

group learning, but felt like they couldn't say that out loud. And apparently the discussion is now opening up.

I think change is going to be a long time coming”. - Susan Cain

“The whole educational and professional training system is a very elaborate filter, which just weeds out people who are too independent, and who think for themselves, and who don't know how to be submissive, and so on -- because they're dysfunctional to the institutions.” “Do you train for passing tests or do you train for creative inquiry?” “Most problems of teaching are not problems of growth but helping cultivate growth. As far as I know, and this is only from personal experience in teaching, I think about ninety percent of the problem in teaching, or maybe ninety-eight percent, is just to help the students get interested. Or what it usually amounts to is to not prevent them from being interested. Typically they come in interested, and the process of education is a way of driving that defect out of their minds. But if children['s] ... normal interest is maintained or even aroused, they can do all kinds of things in ways we don't understand.” ― Noam Chomsky

“I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.” ― Winston S. Churchill

“I suppose it is because nearly all children go to school nowadays and have things arranged for

them that they seem so forlornly unable to produce their own ideas.” ― Agatha Christie

“The parent who praises a child’s accomplishment by saying, ‘You studied hard!’ promotes a growth mindset. The parent who says, ‘Look at your A, son! You’re a genius!’ promotes a fixed mindset.”

“A child’s sense of secure attachment—this idea that I, in all my glory, as well as all my stickiness and

imperfection, am loved and accepted—allows him not only to take risks in the world but also to take risks

with his own emotions. Knowing he will not be invalidated, rejected, punished, or shamed for feeling

whatever he feels, he can test out sadness, happiness, or anger and figure out how to manage or respond to

each of these emotions in turn.” Susan David

“Study without desire spoils the memory, and it retains nothing that it takes in.”

“Learning never exhausts the mind”

“Where there is shouting, there is no true knowledge.”

“Nature is the source of all true knowledge. She has her own logic, her own laws, she has no effect without

cause nor invention without necessity” ― Leonardo da Vinci

“Wisdom is looking back at your life and realising that every single event, person, place and idea

was part of the perfected experience you needed to build your dream. Not one was a mistake”.

- John de Martini

“A loving heart is the truest wisdom” - Charles Dickens

“Saying nothing sometimes says the most”. – Emily Dickinson

““So what should we say when children complete a task—say, math problems—quickly and perfectly? Should we deny them the praise they have earned? Yes. When this happens, I say, “Whoops. I guess that was too easy. I apologize for wasting your time. Let’s do something you can really learn from!”” “After seven experiments with hundreds of children, we had some of the clearest findings I’ve ever seen: Praising children’s intelligence harms their motivation and it harms their performance. How can that be? Don’t children love to be praised? Yes, children love praise. And they especially love to be praised for their intelligence and talent. It really does give them a boost, a special glow—but only for the moment. The minute they hit a snag, their confidence goes out the window and their motivation hits rock bottom. If success means they’re smart, then failure means they’re dumb. That’s the fixed mindset.”

“If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning. That way, their children don’t have to be slaves of praise. They will have a lifelong way to build and repair their own confidence.”

“Like my sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. Wilson, these teachers preached and practiced the fixed mindset. In their classrooms, the students who started the year in the high-ability group ended the year there, and those who started the year in the low-ability group ended the year there. But some teachers preached and practiced a growth mindset. They focused on the idea that all children could develop their skills, and in their classrooms a weird thing happened. It didn’t matter whether students started the year in the high- or the low-ability group. Both groups ended the year way up high. It’s a powerful experience to see these findings.” “it’s not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest.”

“What on earth would make someone a nonlearner? Everyone is born with an intense drive to learn. Infants stretch their skills daily. Not just ordinary skills, but the most difficult tasks of a lifetime, like learning to walk and talk. They never decide it’s too hard or not worth the effort. Babies don’t worry about making mistakes or humiliating themselves. They walk, they fall, they get up. They just barge forward. What could put an end to this exuberant learning? The fixed mindset. As soon as children become able to evaluate themselves, some of them become afraid of challenges. They become afraid of not being smart. I have studied thousands of people from preschoolers on, and it’s breathtaking how many reject an opportunity to learn.”

“Don’t judge. Teach. It’s a learning process.”

“IF, like those with the growth mindset, you believe you can develop yourself, then you're open to accurate information about your current abilities, even it it's unflattering. What's more, if you're oriented toward learning, as they are, you need accurate information about your current abilities in order to learn effectively” “I looked for themes and underlying principles across lectures,” and “I went over mistakes until I was certain I understood them.” They were studying to learn, not just to ace the test. And, actually, this was why they got higher grades—not because they were smarter or had a better background in science.”

“A few modern philosophers … assert that an individual’s intelligence is a fixed quantity, a quantity which cannot be increased. We must protest and react against this brutal pessimism.… With practice, training, and above all, method, we manage to increase our attention, our memory, our judgment and literally to become more intelligent than we were before.”

AT the dinner table each evening, you and your partner structure the discussion around the growth mindset, asking each child (and each other): “What did you learn today?” “What mistake did you make that taught you something?” “What did you try hard at today?” You go around the table with each question, excitedly discussing your own and one another’s effort, strategies, setbacks, and learning.” Carol Dweck

“I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” “It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education.” “Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” “Common sense is the collection og prejudices acquired by age eighteen” “It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom. Without this it goes to wrack and ruin without fail.” “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” “Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as hard duty. Never regard study as duty but as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in

“Everything must be made as simple as possible. But not simpler.”

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help

but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvellous structure of reality. It

is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day. The world as we have created it

is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking. ― Albert Einstein

“The secret of education lies in respecting the pupil. It is not for you to choose what he shall know,

what he shall do. It is chosen and foreordained and he only holds the key to his own secret.” ― Ralph Waldo

sometimes things must unfold in their own time”. Jon Kabat-Zinn

“Some advice: keep the flame of curiosity and wonderment alive, even when studying for boring

exams. That is the well from which we scientists draw our nourishment and energy. And also, learn the math.

Math is the language of nature, so we have to learn this language”.

“We need less memorization - I never memorized the periodic table of the elements - I've never used it, and

I'm a physicist! I can look it up”.

“So often, science fiction helps to get young people interested in science. That's why I don't mind talking

about science fiction. It has a real role to play: to seize the imagination”.

“Leaders in China and India realize that science and technology lead to success and wealth. But many

countries in the West graduate students into the unemployment line by teaching skills that were necessary to

live in 1950”. - Michio Kaku

“It was my teacher's genius, her quick sympathy, her loving tact which made the first years of my

education so beautiful. It was because she seized the right moment to impart knowledge that made it so

pleasant and acceptable to me.…..Any teacher can take a child to the classroom, but not every teacher can

make him learn. He will not work joyously unless he feels that liberty is his, whether he is busy or at rest; he

must feel the flush of victory and the heart-sinking of disappointment before he takes with a will the tasks

distasteful to him and resolves to dance his way bravely through a dull routine of textbooks”. – Hellen Keller

fortune on education to better me.” – Graham Norton

“Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their

minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.” ― Plato

“Thank goodness I was never sent to school; it would have rubbed off some of the originality.” ―

Beatrix Potter

“The fact is that given the challenges we face, education doesn't need to be reformed -- it needs to

be transformed. The key to this transformation is not to standardize education, but to personalize it, to build

achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where

they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions.”

“Imagination is the source of every form of human achievement. And it's the one thing that I believe we are

“All of life is a constant education.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

“We now know that the way to help a child develop optimally is to help create connections in her

brain—her whole brain—that develop skills that lead to better relationships, better mental health, and more

meaningful lives. You could call it brain sculpting, or brain nourishing, or brain building. Whatever phrase

you prefer, the point is crucial, and thrilling: as a result of the words we use and the actions we take,

children’s brains will actually change, and be built, as they undergo new experiences”

“When we begin to know ourselves in an open and self-supportive way, we take the first step to encourage

our children to know themselves”. – Daniel Siegel

“Only a generation of readers will spawn a generation of writers.” ― Steven Spielberg

“It is paradoxical, yet true, to say, that the more we know, the more ignorant we become in the

prospects.” – Nikola Tesla

Being a woman, change and the future

“The promise of artificial intelligence and computer science generally vastly outweighs the impact

it could have on some jobs in the same way that, while the invention of the airplane negatively affected the

railroad industry, it opened a much wider door to human progress.”

“The brain is one of the richest green fields of science. There's so much yet to be discovered”

“The thing you realize when you get into studying neuroscience, even a little bit, is that everything is

connected to everything else. So it's as if the brain is trying to use everything at its disposal - what it is seeing,

what it is hearing, what is the temperature, past experience”

“I choose optimism. I hope to be a catalyst not only by providing financial resources but also by fostering a

“As we go forward, I hope we're going to continue to use technology to make really big differences in how

people live and work”.– Sergey Brin

“For a very long time now, I’ve been saying to young women, you can have it all, but not all at the same time. How important it is to take very good care of yourself, of your mental and physical and spiritual wellbeing, it’s hard to do. It’s easier to be a workaholic than to have a truly balanced life. It’s very tough for a lot of women teetering on that tight rope of balance and balancing too many responsibilities. “The Australian way of affirmative action is setting goals and recognising discrimination and lack of opportunity and deciding to take action and setting some goals and targets. “In looking for the right places to make these tiny changes, there are three broad areas of

opportunity. You can tweak your beliefs—or what psychologists call your mindset; you can tweak your

“The job market of the future will consist of those jobs that robots cannot perform. Our blue-collar work is
