Wodka und OlivenVodka and OlivesAdrian KasnitzNovel — German fi rst editionSeries: neudeutsch #1

In his fi rst novel, Adrian Kasnitz draws an emotional picture of growing up in a small town in the Ruhr region. It is a story of home and homelessness, of an old house on the outskirts of the town and its inhabitants who have come from many nations. And even when the neighborhood is threatened with destruction and decay,

the symbiotic relationship between the old house and the people who live there remains intact.

Th e novel tells the story of people who have left their homelands for whatever reason, voluntarily or involuntarily, in order to fi nd their place and a new home in this house. Th e novel’s main protagonist, Moritz, a withdrawn individual, is evidently distraught and obviously has unfi nished yet undisclosed business which remains a secret. For now, young Moritz seems to be unable to get off to a new start, even in Berlin.

Quietly and without drama, Wodka und Oliven tells a story about being equal and yet diff erent, for nobody can nor should deny their cultural roots. Kasnitz is a sharp observer, he notices the smallest rift s in the web of everyday life and records how they become bigger and bigger until they deteriorate.

QuotesKasnitz tells the story multi-facetted and empathetically giving the readers the chance to establish their own close connection to the fi gures, especially the protagonist, Mori-tz. Vodka and Olives is a quiet novel that wants to be explored. — Mario Osterland

Eventually, the reasons for this manic remembering and recounting are revealed, the inwardly broken fi gure becomes plausible, the strands of stories which meandered through the novel come together to a large harrowing whole that says something about Germany and her rambunctious past. And a love survives whose tender poetry will touch the reader and create hope. — Martin Brinkmann, DIE ZEIT

Synopsis Moritz wanders aimlessly through the streets of Berlin, haunted by memories of his childhood and of his youth, in the small town on the outskirts of the Ruhr region where he grew up and by memories connected to Poland, the home of his parents, and also to Greece In all these memories the old house on Klingenweg and its inhabitants are always present. When speaking with strangers, Moritz spills out his recollections compulsively remembering the great hopes of his parents and their neighbors, realizing that they have not been fulfilled. Often it is his conversa-tion partner, who sets these memories in motion: the child that plays the games he used to play as a child; an old lady’s tale reviving in him the story of his grandpar-ents. Not until he meets and learns to love the attractive waitress Ella, is he able to confront the entire story of his past.

Vodka und Olives is a quiet story without great drama. It is staged in Berlin but that is not really important. Often poetic and yet realistic without sensational effects, a very balanced language, never kitsch — this is how Adrian Kasnitz writes.

Adrian Kasnitz was born 1974, in the Ermland, he grew up in Westphalia. He studied history, German studies, East-European history, and Romance studies in Cologne and Prague. Adrian Kassnitz has two children and lives and works in Cologne.

bipolar. Die Verteidi-gung der Mittebipolar. Defending the MiddleMartin WesselyNovel — German fi rst editionSeries: neudeutsch #2

bipolar tells a story of decay and relentlessly expanding emptiness. But it is also about hope just beyond the silver lining on the ho-rizon. One has to set out, to break with the

past and have the courage to leave the encumbrances of the past behind. Th e fi rst step is a positive one toward a diff erent, hopefully better future, but it is necessary as one proceeds, to hone one’s perception of what is essential. So it is with janitor Böttcher when he looks from a height onto the past and re-members how diff erent life used to be. Today, it is obedience that counts; in the past other values were important. “What do the old masters want to communi-cate?” … Does Böttcher hear their message?

Synopsis How does it feel to live and work in an almost empty apartment tower? Janitor Böttcher experiences it every day anew while he is undertaking maintenance, combating decay and vandalism and resisting persistent thoughts about the mean-inglessness of his work.

But at night when he returns home, he refl ects on his life, his anonymous, absent employers on whose behalf he deals with these problems day aft er day, the people living in the complex, who from time to time, vanish without trace. Where have they gone? And those who remain, are they destined to disappear one day? Is he faced with the same fate?

When Böttcher looks down from a height he has the foreboding that behind the high rise buildings, something is waiting for him beyond the horizon, something consisting of greater substance than his role of ensuring tenants’ compliance with apartment house rules.

Der weite Weg desMädchens HongTh e Girl Hong’s Long RoadXu PeiNovel — German fi rst editionSeries: neudeutsch #3

Every day, we hear in the news, of what’s happening in China. Improvements for the people determined by the the leaders of the Communist Party and about how open and

progressive China has become. Yet at the same time, we receive constant informa-tion regarding violations of basic human rights. Th e principal protagonist, a girl called Hong, though lovingly known as Pipa, was born in Communist China. She grew up protected and well cared for by political-system conformist parents, who both held responsible positions in the Party and were thus in a position of privilege. As she grew up, Pipa found confl ict between her Chinese soul and the restrictive party structures. Aft er graduating from high school and university, she visited Chinese relatives in Europe but returned to China. Th e massacre on Tiananmen Square infl amed her her awareness and inner struggle and caused her to leave China to start a new life in a distant and foreign Europe.

Synopsis Th e novel Th e Girl Hong's Long Road provides insight into the daily life, the labor and anxieties as well as the joys and friendships of the system-conformist class, at the same time, it underlines traditional Chinese values which are not related to power and politics: morality, knowledge, pride of rank.

Th e story contains also a clear warning: To not accept as the truth everything that the Chinese leadership projects outward. Paroles were always used eff ectively in totalitarian regimes of all times! Th e novel confronts us with how China really is not how the party leaders and their allies want us to see it.

The Girl Hong's Long Road is a story about home and homelessness, hope and hopelessness, about a carefree childhood and growing understanding in adoles-cence. It reflects the chasm in China’s society. At the same time, it raises hope that China’s true soul will eclipse the party bureaucracy in the event of which they will then also be understood by the European “Big Foots.”

Xu Pei was born in Kingding, People’s Republic of China. Her parents grew up in the Communist system, arranging their lives in synch with this environment. Xu Pei arrived in Germany at the end of 1988, taking up German studies and phi-losophy at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf where she obtained her doctorate in German Studies in 1996. After the massacre on Tiananmen Square in 1989, she began to publish in both Chinese and German languages. Today, she lives and works in Cologne. To date, Xu Pei has published five volumes of poetry, which were illustrated by such renowned German artists as Jörg Immendorff, Georg Baselitz, and Markus Lüpertz. Xu Pei is engaged in human rights advocacy for politically persecuted citizens and groups in China, such as the Falun Gong movement. She is forbidden to visit her homeland China. The Girl Hong's Long Road is a debut novel of the exile Chinese, which she has conscientiously written in German.

Sales Arguments■ The book is a “must have” for all who want to know more about China from

other than the Commmunist Party perspective. Since the novel was written by a Chinese in German nothing is “lost in translation,” there are no linguistic distortions.

Eine kleine PassionA Small PassionMartin KrumbholzNovel — German fi rst editionSeries: neudeutsch #4

Christof Rubart, almost 47 years old, divorced, father of a daughter, is a late bloomer: For only a few years has he worked steadily — as a curator at a museum for modern art. But he does not only have a passion for painting: Rubart is a melan-cholic connoisseur of beauty and not least of women. We follow him through a July day

in 2011, from early morning to late night. It is a weekday, a Th ursday, and the day before the opening of a new large exhibition German Painting 1990–2010 — a day, as it were, between work and festivity. Together with his revered director, Gregor Senzacolpa, Rubart visits a café, goes on to to have his hair cut, drops by the senior residence to see his 101-year-old father, meets friends for lunch, has an ice cream with his divorced wife and daughter, and, in the course of the aft ernoon, goes a bit astray.

Eine kleine Passion can be read in many ways: as a novel about a metropolis on the Rhine river, as a love story, in fact the story of a love triangle, as a modern “Éduca-tion sentimentale,” as the psychological profi le of a white heterosexual man (in ear-lier times “the measure of all things”) — and, last but not least, as a paraphrase of the biblical story of the Passion of Christ: For each of the novel’s fourteen chapters variegates in a playful, sometimes high-spirited form, one station of the “via crucis biblica.” Th e text pleasurably underlines this mimesis in two respects: the imitation of the everyday occurrence as well as the mythical, the festive, the sacred.

Synopsis Th e critic Martin Krumbholz has written a novel, whose distinct dramaturgical structure that follows the biblical sequence of the Stations of the Cross may not be noticed by the reader. However, this dramaturgical format gives the text a diff erent validity and even a certain ambiguity. Th e author is fascinated by the collision of ordinary everyday occurrences, i.e., of profane reality with the allegorical. He pulls diff erent linguistic registers ranging from serious refl ections on fi delity to almost Dadaist slapstick.

What unfolds is a classical snapshot in time in the form of a concrete day in the life of Christof Rubart, curator of contemporary art in a metropolis in the Rhineland. More important than the people he meets on this extraordinary workday, the usual colleagues, the typical critics, the unexpected lover (actually a prostitute), and the ill-humored ex-wife and daughter, is the ongoing confrontation with himself. The hero of the novel Eine kleine Passion is one of these artists who constantly remem-bers and reflects. In passing, the reader gets to know Rubart’s entire life story; he seems to represent a new kind of man who is still in search for his place in life. But it may also be possible that this very amiable hero is a kind of modern Bartleby: “Having ‘to have something by any means’ is not his thing, never was, for it would mean to be sure about the future task.”

Martin Krumbholz, born in 1954 in Wuppertal, lives in Düsseldorf. For many years he has worked as a literary and theater critic for renowned media such as the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and the Frankfurter Rundschau. In the early fall of 2012, his play Grandhotel Bogotá premiered at the State Theater Darmstadt. Eine kleine Passion is his first novel and was supported through a proj-ect study of the Culture Foundation NRW.

one of the country’s renowned critics■ Strong allusion to Düsseldorf and to the art world

Immer is' wasTh ere’s always somethingDietrich von HornNovel — German fi rst edition

Th ere's always someting is the title of an exciting life story that recounts, in a collage-like form, the search of an adolescent for the meaning of life, and what could provide more meaning to life than winning the hand of a golden princess? But before that prize is obtained, it is necessary for the pseudo

prince to bravely struggle to survive the rigors of life in a postwar Germany with-out going to rack and ruin. In the era of the economic miracle and the so-called 68ers movement there is no place for dreamers.

German history, recounted laconically yet precisely, haughtily yet touching and al-ways humorous — von Horn pointedly depicts the existential situation of an entire generation.

Synopsis With a sympathetic tone and without pretention despite the oft en poetically dense language, storyteller Dietrich von Horn captivates the readers’ attention as he recounts the unenviable course of his life. As one of the many fatherless children in postwar Germany, little Dietrich developed into a curious underachiever and com-pliant army recruit whose passivity prevented him from addressing his mother’s constant question of what was to become of him.

Comfort and hope came in the form of popular culture, particularly the fi gure of Prince Valiant who, in one episode of von Horn’s adventurous life, wins the Queen of the Fog Islands. He followed his idol, come what may — even in 1968…

“Berlin welcomed the year 1968. Sophie looked at me with her large, dark eyes. In the movie theaters ran a James Bond fi lm in the entrance scene of which the umbilical cord between a space pilot and his space ship was cut and he slowly vanished into the infi nitely silent darkness of deep space. We never saw each other again.”
