AchievementsSustainability continues to be at the heart of everything Marshalls does. As the fi rst company in the hard landscaping industry to belong to the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), Marshalls is committed to the implementation of the ETI Base Code, pioneering the ethical sourcing of natural stone paving from India and China. Marshalls Fairstone products continue to be popular with socially conscious consumers.

Following its acceptance in 2009, Marshalls remains a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact (UNCG), a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with the ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.

Marshalls is committed to carbon reduction, having become the fi rst organisation in its industry to gain re-accreditation to the Carbon Trust Standard, after achieving a 15 per cent reduction in carbon emissions. Marshalls remains the only organisation in the world to have carbon labelled its entire domestic range.

In 2012, the company retained its standing within the FTSE4Good – the Index Series designed to objectively measure the performance of companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards.

Recent DevelopmentsFollowing the 2012 London Olympic Games, widely acclaimed as the greatest to date, Marshalls is proud to have supplied a wide range of products and services to the construction of the Olympic Village, which has transformed one of the most deprived areas in the UK. In particular, Marshalls was the hard landscaping supplier of choice for the Athletes Village, which housed over 12,000 athletes and offi cials for the duration of the games, and in legacy is being transformed into a brand new London district.

PromotionMarshalls’ marketing campaigns focus on the company’s mission to create better landscapes for all. In a year which saw both drought and fl ood conditions across many areas of the UK, the commercial marketing team embarked on a campaign to promote the company’s market leading water management range, including fi lms featuring world leading Structural Engineer Professor John Knapton, and Flood Expert Mary Dhonau OBE.

For the third year Marshalls was the offi cial sponsor of the Sustain Awards for Sustainability, Business and the Build Environment, which celebrate the hard work and commitment of all those achieving distinction and success in the fi eld of Sustainability.

In 2012, Marshalls continued to engage with consumers by maintaining a presence at the horticultural world’s leading annual events, such as RHS Hampton Court. The domestic team also focused on fi nding innovative

ways to promote new products and continues to work hard to maintain

the market leading status of the Marshalls Register of

Approved Landscaper and Driveway Installers.

Marshalls has continued to invest in its online presence with a new look website for 2013, and

a focus on social media activity through Twitter,

Facebook and YouTube, encouraging users to ask

questions, share information and access Marshalls’ expertise.

Brand History

1890: Solomon Marshall starts to quarry in Southowram, Halifax and in 1904 establishes S. Marshall & Sons Ltd in West Yorkshire.

1947: A second production site is opened to manufacture lintels, steps and fence posts. The following year an engineering division is established.

1964: Marshalls becomes a plc with shares quoted on the London Stock Exchange.

1972: New product development sees the introduction of block paving and the famous ‘Beany Block’, which combines drain and kerb.

1988: Brick manufacturer George Armitage & Sons is acquired and goes on to become Marshalls Clay Products.

2004: Marshalls acquires Woodhouse, expanding the Group’s product offering to include design-led street furniture, lighting and signage.

2009: More than 2,000 of Marshalls’ commercial products now have a Carbon Trust Carbon Reduction Label.

2011: Marshalls announces a European venture, Marshalls NV.

2012: A wide range of Marshalls hard landscaping products feature at the London 2012 Olympic Park. Marshalls opens its offi ces in Xiamen, China to service the Asian market.
