Annual Church Picnic

Annual Church Picnic

Sunday, August

25

1

Do you remember when St. Mark’s had a worship service at Sico Park, followed by the annual church picnic? This year, the worship team and family/fellowship/outreach team are working together to again have a worship service at Little Chiques Park, followed by the annual picnic. The worship service and picnic will be held on Sunday, August 25, with worship at 10:30 AM and the picnic lunch at 12 noon. (An 8 AM worship service will be held at the church, as usual.)

There will be several changes at the picnic this year. One change is that in order to better help plan how many to prepare food for, the team will be selling tickets for the picnic. Cost of tickets will be $5 for ages 5 and up, and children 4 and younger will be free. The cost of the ticket will include the cost of a bbq chicken leg and thigh, a baked potato, butter, salt and

2

pepper, beverages, plates, plasticware, and other paper products. Tickets will also be used to award “door prizes.” Families of our Faith Factory Children and our Free Community Dinners will be invited to join us in the park for worship and lunch. St. Mark’s family is encouraged to invite neighbors and friends to join us, as well. Besides lots of food, there will be games for everyone. So please save the date of August 25 to join us for worship, a picnic lunch, and lots of good fellowship. Watch for more information on the sale of tickets and what suggested foods you should bring to the picnic. If you have any questions or would like to help with the picnic, please contact Janet Lehman at (717) 653-4189 or [email protected].

Look for the Helpers When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world. - Fred Rogers

Sunburn: Caring for a Common Summer Casualty

By Cherie S. Adkins, PhD, RN

UM Day @ Dorney Park

Saturday, June 22 is United Methodist Day at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom. Save $19 off a one-day regular admission and the proceeds benefit the United

Sunburn is a common & uncomfortable casualty of summer. Even relatively “mild” sunburn results in skin damage. Despite the best intentions to prevent sunburn, it can happen, so knowing what to do should sunburn occur is important for one’s health. Consider the following at-home care tips: • Rinse the affected area with cool (not

cold) water several times a day; cold water further damages burned skin. If the affected skin is soiled, gently cleanse it using mild soap & rinse the skin thoroughly with cool water to remove soap residue.

• Do not apply over-the-counter ointments, creams, or butters to the affected area. Such products “seal-in” the heat which can extend the burn damage. Aloe vera gel however is soothing & can help the skin to heal.

• Rest in a cool, well-ventilated environment. If outside (or in a car), avoid direct sun, stay away from bodies of water & sand (which reflect the sun’s rays), & protect burned skin by covering it with

• Stay hydrated to facilitate skin healing.

2

Healthy adults should aim to drink 2-3 quarts of fluid daily.

• Do not open or “pop” blisters. Blisters appear within a few days following serious sunburn & protect damaged skin underneath; opening a blister exposes that skin to germs that can lead to infection. Keep blistered skin clean & dry & wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce irritation to the blistered area. Apply a non-stick dry sterile dressing over a blister if it opens on its own, to minimize infection risk.

• Watch for signs of various kinds of heat illness that can accompany sunburn including nausea, vomiting, headache, fever, chills, dizziness, extreme thirst, muscle cramps, confusion, and/or decreased urination. Seek medical attention immediately if any of these signs/symptoms develop.

To learn more on sunburn prevention, at-home sunburn care, and/or heat illnesses, see MedlinePlus, courtesy of the U.S. Library of Medicine & the National Institutes of Health at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus.

Thank You Notes Henry & Arlene Zerphey would like to thank everyone for all of your warmth and Christian love in the form of cards, prayers, visits, food, etc. The people of St. Mark’s Church have an extremely caring heart and we just love you all tremendously! Dear Church Family, Thank you so much for your donation! I was so excited to see how much you raised! I really appreciated it. Abby can’t wait for her first trip and I am excited to see the orphans again! Abby is going to Honduras and hiking in the mountains showing God’s love. All of you help me. Thank you for the gift card for Lowe’s!

Love, Aliza Johns

Dear St. Mark’s, Thank you for donating towards both me and Aliza’s mission trips. The money giving will be helping children f the Lord learn that they too can have hope and trust in God. Through us, the Lord our God will be putting us to work on teaching the gospel to those who haven’t yet learned or heard what miracles he can do. I will be teaching the gospel through song, dance, theater, and even get to spend a little time with the locals playing soccer in Honduras. Aliza will be taking her shoes that she has collected with help from wonderful neighbors here in St. Mark’s who have also donated shoes to her. She will be giving shoes to those who walk our Father’s earth with bare skin. A soul to open for new life for the souls of a simple pair of shoes they can wear. She will be washing feet like Jesus did for his disciples in the Bible. As we leave, we both will be thanking all who have supported us. We ask that you still continue to pray for us on our journeys that the Lord takes us on. As I go to Honduras and Aliza to South Africa, know that we are serving the Lord. Remember “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to BELIEVE.” John 20:29 Thank you so much for the Lowe’s gift card! Abby & Aliza Johns Dear Members of St. Mark’s, Our family wishes to thank you on behalf of Devin/cota for all you have done to help. The miracle that God has given us can be seen in Devin’s face. He can breathe again. Two months ago it was a struggle for him to go one block without oxygen. On Sunday, we walked four miles and felt wonderful! We have truly been blessed!

2

Thank you Denny & Janet and all else who helped him accomplish this miracle. God Bless You! Ann Brubaker Dear Friends of St. Mark’s, Thank you all so much for the many cards, phone calls of well wishes for my recent shoulder replacement and for my neighbor (Shirley Lantzy) for the food she gave me during my surgery. Thanks to Dr. Dave for the visit. May God bless you all – thanks to all! Dottie Allen Thanks everyone for the support, visits, prayers, etc. following a recent car accident. A special thanks to Dr. Dave and Pastor Sean too! Bill & Irma Wealand Thanks to you and all St. Mark’s UM Church members for your support to the extended church in Egypt and its needy through your contribution to Mr. Mofeed Tanious at Christmas and Easter yearly. Most of your gift goes to help the poor in the villages surrounding the big city, in the form of clothing, food, and medicine. Over 200 families are served. The people here in Egypt do appreciate very much your financial support and spiritual as well as through your prayers and love. Deacon, Nabil Benyamin The Egyptian Coptic Church To Our St. Mark’s Church Family, Thank you so much for your financial and prayer support for our ministry with GAiN. We’ve been meeting with many families to share how they can partner with us to touch the lives of less fortunate people throughout the world. It is a privilege to be sent by St. Mark’s to serve with GAiN, which exists to demonstrate the love of God in word and deed to hurting and needy people around the world through relief and development projects. Please cover the ministry in prayer June 18-22 when many with a heart for serving the poor, come from all over the country to pack aid at the Distribution Center in Mount Joy. Let us know if you’d like to join us in serving that week. Contact us at [email protected]; (717) 367-4789; or at www.throughwordanddeed.com. Rick, Andrea, Emma, & Ethan Lown

Living Thanks

“Thank you!” I exuded, after receiving a hefty bag of homegrown tomatoes. I set the produce on the kitchen floor; I would attend to it shortly. But I got distracted — for days. Finally, I lifted the bag to make use of the gift, and the bottom fell out. Many of the tomatoes had become squishy, their juices soaking the paper beneath them. Instead of making good use of the generous gift, I was left cleaning up rotten tomatoes and throwing many of the veggies away. We do the same with God’s gifts: “I’ll practice piano tomorrow … next week … next month …” until soon we don’t remember how to play at all. We pass up chances to visit someone dear and, when she moves away, regret squandering the friendship. We opt to sleep in instead of attending worship, unaware of what gifts of God’s Word and Christian fellowship we’ll miss. Next time I receive something — from God or anyone else — may the Spirit help me not just give thanks but live thanks by using and enjoying the gift!

—Heidi Mann
