The Daily News of TV Sales Monday, January 30, 2017 OUTPUT PROJECTED TO GROW 5.3% Businesses that are part of national franchises make up a large part of the advertising at local media. In the vital automotive category, the tier two dealer groups usually spend a great deal of money along with the tier three individual dealerships. In some other categories, franchisees often form groups (such as McDonald’s co-ops), where part of what they have paid to the franchisor in advertising funds comes back into local markets, and many specialty businesses with just a handful of locations may get advertising creative from the parent, and add a local tag. The annual report from the International Franchise Association says that the franchise part of the economy was strong in 2016, and is expected to expand faster than the overall economy this year. The group says there has been a “noticeable unleashing of ‘animal spirits’ (as) consumer and business optimism and stock market indexes have surged.” That sentiment is expected to help franchised businesses outpace the overall economy. The IFA’s report says the number of franchised businesses grew by 1.7% last year and will grow by another 1.6% this year. It estimates that at this moment there are about 744,000 franchised businesses in operation, producing $237.6 billion in output. The largest single group of those businesses are Quick Serve Restaurants, with over 190,000 in operation, showing growth of 1.9% in unit count in a year. (There are also an addition 31,000+ Table/Full Service Restaurants—that category also grew by 1.9% in the past year). The number of auto dealers - 37,603 - grew by 1.3% in the past year. The number two category is a broad grouping called Personal Services with over 109,000 establishments. That’s also the fastest growing category of franchises with growth of 2.3% in the past year. Close behind is the Business Services group with over 106,000 in operation having grown 1.5% in the past year. And while much of the supermarket business is company-owned, there are still almost 53,000 franchised businesses in the Retail Food category, with the number up 1.2% last year. While there should be growth in franchising everywhere, the IFA projects the South and West to see the strongest expansion, including franchise employment and output growth. It notes along with the strong growth of population and personal income in the Sun Belt, tourism is an important driver of franchise growth and both the restaurant and lodging industries are “franchise-intensive business lines.” ADVERTISER NEWS The J.D. ECONOMIC NEWS Fourth quarter Gross Domestic Product came in at a 1.9% growth rate according to just-released data from the Commerce Department, a large drop from the 3.5% growth seen in the third quarter. For the year growth was just 1.6%, down from 2.6% in 2015. A wider trade deficit—which acts as a negative to GDP when the difference between imports and exports gets greater—was seen as the primary cause of the decline, while consumer spending and business investment showed resilience……Durable goods orders were down 0.4% in December, but it was largely due to cutbacks in purchases by the military. Consumer purchases of durable goods were better, especially in the automotive sector, which was up 2%. LIVE SUPER BOWL SPOT Live commercials go back to the very earliest days of television and recently NBC ran a few as part of the telecast of Hairspray Live. Now we expect to see the first live spot in a Super Bowl, for Mars’ Snickers candy bar. Hair stylist/owner Carolyn Aronson may have gotten the idea from her husband—Jeff Aronson is the founder of Cash4Gold which ran the first-ever direct response ad in a Super Bowl in 2009, starring the late Ed McMahon.

VERIZON CABLE DEAL ADVANCING QUICKLY? Last week we were among the first to report on growing belief that Verizon was showing possible interest in making a major cable acquisition and within the last week it appears a possible deal could be progressing quickly. After a soft Verizon quarterly report showing little growth in its primary phone business, The Wall Street Journal is now reporting Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam has made a preliminary approach to Charter, and is working with advisors to study a potential transaction. Charter has a market capitalization of over $80 billion, while Verizon is valued at $194 billion. Reports say Verizon isn’t terribly interested in traditional TV services, rather it is a big believer in the structure that powers high-speed internet, and “Charter would offer a large, dense fiber-and-cable network that could bolster Verizon’s coming fifth-generation wireless services.” Of course if there were to be a deal, it would be an early test of regulatory pressures at the new FCC and other federal agencies. There’s a substantial overlap of many Charter operations with Verizon’s FiOS, which currently has about 5.7 million internet customers and an estimated 4.7 million television subscribers.
