10. He then lived with his mother and stepfather. He had a difficult childhood. He was interested in films from a young age and started

his own film club. He met Andre Bazin (was a world renowned and

influential French film critic and film theorist) who became a personal friend and helped him get out of jail when Francois deserted the army.

Andre Bazin gave him a job at his magazine: Cahiers du Cinéma where Francois made a name for himself and was banned from the Cannes film festival.

The French New Wave The New Wave (French: La Nouvelle Vague) was a blanket

term coined by critics for a group of French filmmakers of the late 1950s and 1960s, influenced by Italian Neorealism and classical Hollywood cinema. Although never a formally organized movement, the New Wave filmmakers were linked by their self-conscious rejection of the literary period pieces being made in France and written by novelists, their spirit of youthful iconoclasm, the desire to shoot more current social issues on location, and their intention of experimenting with the film form. "New Wave" is an example of European art cinema.
