web of approximately 4800 miles of navigable rivers and canals crisscrosses France. For centuries, these inland waterways have provided a lifeline for communication and transportation. The French canal system had its rudimen-tary beginnings during thereign of Henri IV in the early 17th century. In the years that followed, it evolved into an efficient network linking the provinces with major trade

centers. In their heyday, shallow draft canal barges plied these arteries, transporting everything from wine and grain to timber and pig iron. Early passenger vessels, les Coches d´Eau (water carriages), offered fashionable men and women an alternative to the discomforts of cross-country travel on primitive highways.

Although today the commercial barges are mostly a passing breed, the French Navigation Authority continues to maintain its canals for their historic im-portance and scenic beauty. Our cruise routes have been carefully chosen to travel along some of the most charming and picturesque sections of the French country waterways.

About the regions

Alsace-Lorraine These two historic regions are linked by one of France’s most scenic waterways, which

rises over the summit of the Vosges Mountains. The contrasts between these neighboring areas provide an interesting coun-terpoint to the cruise. Alsace is a storybook land of half-timbered houses, cobble-stone streets, and storks nesting on chimney tops. Hospitality beckons from wine taverns where foie gras, tart flambé, and kugelhopf are specialties. Lorraine is a place of pink sandstone villages, rolling meadows, and mountain forests. It is the home of the savory tart, the quiche lorraine, and Marcel Proust’s favorite cake, the madeleine.

In addition to being the home of the world’s most celebrated wine, Champagne’s location

to the east of Paris has placed it at the center of momentous events. Visitors can discover a grand historical heritage, from the triumphant victories of Joan of Arc and Napoleon to the 20th century battles of the great World Wars. The extensive vineyards date to Roman times, but it was the discovery of effervescent wine in the 17th century that made Champagne recognized around the world as the symbol of celebration.

Burgundy Situated in the heart of France, this tranquil region is interlaced by a network of over 600

miles of waterways. A truly timeless place, Burgundy has been at the cross-roads of France since the prehistoric age, and each subsequent culture has left behind its distinctive imprint. The rich legacy of art, architecture, and commerce recalls an age when the Dukes of Burgundy were more powerful than the French kings. Today, Burgundy’s renowned vineyards produce some of the world’s most prized wines, and an abundance of superb ingredients makes it one of the great gastronomic centers.

Located just outside the Ile de France, this region serves as a gateway from Paris to the

well-known château country to the southwest. Here, some of the earliest sections of the French canals, dating from 1604, are still in service. Christened the Garden of France because of its mild climate and pastoral countryside, the Upper Loire became the favorite playground of French kings. Architecture, landscape design, and natural beauty merged as many of the royal hunting lodges evolved into stately châteaux.

ou are greeted at our meeting point hotel by our guide. He will escort you via private motor-coach or high-speed train to the mooring where your luxury hotel barge awaits. Once aboard, you are welcomed by our cordial, English-speaking crew, and ush-ered to your comfortably appoint- ed stateroom, complete with private bath. Spend the first evening becoming acquainted with your fellow passengers who, like you, seek to experience France in a special way.

Each morning, your barge gets underway for the day’s cruise. As it navigates the frequent locks on the canal, it is easy to step directly ashore. You can lend a hand to a lockkeeper or admire a farmer’s garden as you stroll along the

canalside tow-path. If you feel adventurous, take one of the barge’s bicycles to explore the quiet lanes and quaint villages nearby. Or, simply relax on the sundeckand watch the lovely French countryside slowly unfold before you.

During the day, your Captain invites you to join him for an excursion via private motor-coach to a nearby point of special interest. Each itinerary has been selected to include a varied sampling of the region... romantic castles, historic towns, and renowned vineyards for wine tasting. At certain châteaux and estates, your tour will be conducted by theowner, whose family has been in residence for generations.

Your Captain will also arrange for you to enjoy special local events during your cruise, from farmers’ markets to the fireworks on Quatorze Juillet. Aboard you will fi nd the gracious ambiance of a fi ne country inn. Warm wood panelling, handsome provincial furnishings and plush carpets combine in an atmosphere of informal elegance. You will be served by a friendly, bilingual staff who specialize in making your cruise the holiday of a lifetime.

Each vessel is fully air-conditioned, with individual controls in every state-room. You will be accommodated in charming quarters with private baths, full-sized beds, and generous storage for clothing and luggage. Our king, queen and twin suites are designed to provide ample space for two guests to share in comfort. Thoughtful touches like fresh flowers, extra pillows, and hair dryers are always included.

Lounges are attractively furnished with comfortable sofas and chairs, soft

Horizon II is smartly outfitted for eight passengers, with cherry interiors, traditional furnishings, and an-tique brass accents. Horizon II has an expansive sundeck affording panoramic views of the countryside.

The elegant Nenuphar carries twelve passengers on two decks. On the main deck, the richly panelled salon, furnished in antique provincial style, adjoins a gracious dining room. Fine Wine & Cheese

During your cruise, you will be offered more than two dozen different wines, representing many of France’s major wine growing districts. Our wines are chosen for consideration directly from the prop-erties of the growers. Each January, our captains and directors conduct a comparative tasting from over two hundred, estate-bottled labels to select the new season’s list.

More than half of the chosen wines will bear well-known labels from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vine- yards, such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Meursault, and Chassagne-Montrachet. You will also be introduced to wonderful vintages from distinguished, family-owned properties whose limited production is rarely sold for export.

Monday Morning cruise to Longe-court-en-Plaine. After lunch tour the Clos de Vougeot, a medieval abbey surrounded by 12th century vineyards. This is the headquarters of the Chevaliers du Tastevin, whose special label is awarded annually to the fi nest Cóte-d’Or vintages.

Tuesday Take an escorted walking tour of the historic center of Dijon, with the Ducal Palace, Musée des Beaux Arts, and elegant shops of-fering regional specialties. Return to Adrienne for a leisurely afternoon cruise to St. Jean-de-Losne.

Wednesday Drive to Beaune, a charm-ing town still protected by its original walls. Tour the famous Hospice de Beaune, a magnifi cent example of Flemish Gothic architecture, built in 1443. churches, castles, and gardens. A system of four canals, dating back from 1604, links Paris to the fertile basin

of the Loire River.

Sunday From our meeting point hotel in Paris, you are escorted via private motorcoach to Horizon II’s mooring in Chatillon-sur-Loire. Welcome reception and dinner on board.

Monday Morning cruise across the Briare aqueduct, designed by Gustave Eiffel, to the village of Ouzouer-sur-Trezee. In the afternoon, drive to Sancerre, where you will sample the earthy, full-bodied vintages of this charming Loire wine town.

Tuesday Morning cruise on the Canal de Briare to the evening mooring in historic Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses. After lunch, visit the village and château of St. Fargeau. Tour the 15th century château, once home to Anne-Marie-Louise d’Orléans, cousin of Louis XIV.

Wednesday After breakfast, depart Horizon II for a day trip to the magnifi cent 16th century Château de Chambord, the largest of the Loire Valley châteaux. Commissioned in 1518 by Francois I, the château has been central to French politics and culture from 1537 to the end of the monarchy in 1791. Enjoy lunch overlooking the property at a local restaurant.

Thursday Morning cruise on the winding canal to Montbouy. After lunch, visit Gien, a world renowned

center for French faience since the early 19th century. Learn how this prized earthenware is produced during a private tour of the faience factory. Dinner ashore at the elegant Michelin-starred restaurant, Auberge des Templiers in Les Bézards.

Tuesday Morning visit to the medieval port of Auxerre. Join the Nenuphar’s guide for a walking tour of the St. Etienne Cathedral and the historic quarter where the cobblestone streets fan out from a Renaissance clock tower. Return to Nenuphar for the afternoon cruise to Ancy-le-Franc.

Wednesday Morning visit to the 16th century château of Ancy-le-Franc, one of the fi nest examples of Renaissance architecture in Burgundy. The interiors are furnished with a number of original period pieces. Late morning drive to Noyers, named one of the most beautiful villages in France, for a walking tour of the town center. Scenic afternoon cruise to Raviéres.

Tuesday Morning visit to the village of Lunéville and the 18th century Chateau de Lunéville with its magnifi cent gardens. Wednesday Morning visit of Sarrebourg to visit the 13th century Chapel of the Cordeliers, illuminated by a stunning stained glass window designed by Marc Chagall. Monday Scenic morning cruise on the Canal de l’Aisne à la Marne to Courcy. After lunch, visit the ancient, hilltop town of Laon. The 13th century ramparts surround the old center, and handsome 15 th to 18th century houses line the winding streets. A fi ne Romanesque cathedral dates from 1160.

Tuesday Morning cruise to Sillery. Afternoon drive to Reims, the coronation site of French kings. Guided tour of the majestic Gothic Cathedral, where brilliant stained glass windows by Marc Chagall adorn one of the chapels. Dinner ashore at the renowned Michelin-starred restaurant, Les Crayeres.

Wednesday Morning visit to the cham-pagne village of Ludes, for a private tour and tasting at the House of Ployez-Jacquemart. This small, family owned champagne house is dedicated to preserv-ing the special methods necessary to create extraordinary champagne. Return to Princess for a cruise to Conde-sur-Marne.

Thursday After a morning cruise, drive to Epernay, the capital of Champagne. Tour the vast cellars of Moët & Chandon, followed by a champagne tasting on the property. Afternoon cruise to the village of Cumieres.

Friday Morning cruise past vine covered slopes along the winding Marne River. From historic Château-Thierry, drive to the American Cemetery and World War I battlefields at Belleau Wood. Festive Captain’s Dinner on board.

For Your InformationJoining Instructions All cruises begin on Sunday and end on the following Saturday. It is strongly recommended that guests arrive in France at least one day prior to the cruise, and depart no earlier than the day after the cruise is completed. Guests are met at and returned to our designated meeting and return point hotels. Specifi c instructions will be provided at the time of booking.

Clothing Casual sportswear and comfortable shoes are best for daytime activities. Passengers often change for dinner, but coats and ties for men and dressier garments for women are usually reserved for dinner ashore and Cap-tain’s Dinner at the end of the cruise.

Dietary Requirements On board, the galleys are not equipped to accommo-date restricted diets such as salt-free or Kosher, but consideration will be made whenever possible for simple food allergies.

Electricity Our vessels are equipped with both, the standard 220 volt and 110volt power outlets. However, we recommend bringing your own 110 volt AC converters and adapters for use before or after your cruise. All staterooms are equipped with hair dryers.

French Language On board the barges, all our crew members are English-speaking, so no knowledge of the French language is necessary.

Bar Policy Complimentary bars are stocked with a wide assortment of spirits, wines, beers, and soft drinks. Special requests, such as rare vintages, can be ordered prior to the cruise, and will be charged at cost.

Climate You can expect temperatures ranging from the mid-fi fties in early April, gradually warming to the eighties in July and August, and returning to the fifties by November. Since all our vessels are heated and air-conditioned, cruising is comfortable during any season.

Gratuities The service charge typical throughout France is neither included nor added to the cost of your cruise. If, however, the service has been to your satisfaction, your gratuities will be appreciated. Five to ten percent of the cruise cost per passenger is the average.

Luggage Because storage space in the staterooms is adequate but limited, luggage should be kept to a minimum. Guests of our meeting point hotels can arrange with the Concierge Desk to leave extra luggage in the storage area of the hotel. Guests of other hotels must make alternate arrangements.

(collectively, the “Contractors”) or their agents accepting him on that cruise, on behalf of himself and his heirs, legal representatives, executors and assigns, hereby releases French Country Waterways, Ltd., the Contractors, and their respective agents from, and agrees to indemnify and hold each of them harmless against, any and all liabilities, costs and expenses (including attorney’s fees and costs of litigation) which they may jointly or severally incur to such participant, his heirs, legal representa-tives and assigns, in respect of any claim, suit or cause of action on account of any injury or damage to or in respect of person or property alleged to have been sustained by him, directly or indirectly, as a result of his participation in the cruise, including without limitation any such injury or damage in connec-tion with (i) any transportation, accommodation or other services; (ii) any loss caused by any act or omission of any employee, servant or agent of any of them providing goods or services to any cruise participant; and (iii) any additional expenses or other damages sustained by any cruise participant as a result of the foregoing causes.

Cruise Includes Accommodations for 6 nights with private stateroom and bath; all meals, with estate-bottled wines at lunch and dinner; alcoholic bever-ages; operating expenses of the barge with full services of the Captain and crew; all side tours and excursions; full use of facilities, including bicycles, games, and library; transfers to and from the barge and designated meeting and return points.

Cruise Does Not Include Air transportation and airport taxes; items of per-sonal nature such as gratuities for crew, health and accident insurance, passport, laundry, and purchases.

Cruise Rates Rates are per person, based on double occupancy. A single supplement is added for a guest occupying a stateroom alone. Cruise rates are guaranteed in US dollars upon receipt of the initial cruise deposit.

Payment Schedule A cruise deposit of $1,000 per person, together with a completed, signed Booking Form, is required within two weeks of a telephone reservation to secure individual confi rmations. Full payment of the balance is required at least 60 days prior to the cruise departure date. Cruise documents and fi nal confi rmation of arrangements will be forwarded approximately 30 days prior to departure. A payment schedule for charter reservations will be provided on request.

Cancellation Policy Deposits will be refunded for individual reservations if cancelled 120 days or more prior to departure. Deposits will be refunded for charter reservations if cancelled 180 days or more prior to departure. If an individual reservation is cancelled less than 120 days (180 days for a charter) prior to departure, both the deposit(s) and fi nal payment will be refundable only if, and at the rate, the cancelled accommodation is resold. All cancellation requests must be made in writing, and notice must be received by French Country Waterways, Ltd. to determine the effective date of cancellation. No refunds will be made for partial cruises. All refunds are subject to a handling fee of $100 per person.

Cruise Route Changes Unexpected circumstances, such as weather, or the yearly maintenance schedule of the Canal Authority, may necessitate modifi ca-tions to our cruise routes. Such changes are rare, and will not alter the quality and pleasure of your cruise.

Holiday Insurance We strongly recommend that you consider trip cancella-tion insurance as a means to prevent hardship and to recover charges in the event of an unexpected cancellation. This coverage is available through your insurance company, airline, or travel agent.

Smoking Policy To ensure the safety and comfort of all of our guests, smoking is not permitted within the interior spaces of our vessels.

Age Limit Because our cruises are designed to ensure a relaxed atmosphere, we ask that guests be at least 18 years of age. Exceptions will be made for groups or families who desire to charter an entire barge for a cruise segment.
