The impressionist art movement originated in France in the last quarter of the 19th century as a reaction against traditional art and its strict rules. This movement originated with a group of Paris-based

artists. Impressionism is now seen as the first

movement in modern art, and had a huge influence on the development of art in the

20th century.

WHEN? WHY? WHO?

Page 3: French impressionist project

Their independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during

the 1870s and 1880s, in spite of harsh opposition from the

conventional art community in France.

The Impressionists loosened their brushwork and lightened their palettes to

include pure, intense colors. They abandoned traditional linear perspective and avoided the clarity of form that had

previously served to distinguish the more important elements of a picture from the lesser ones. For this reason, many critics faulted Impressionist paintings for their unfinished appearance and seemingly

amateurish quality.

TECHNIQUES

ACCEPTANCE

His importance resides in his contributions to both Impressionism and

Post-Impressionism. Pissarro studied from great forerunners, including Gustave

Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He later studied and worked alongside

Georges Seurat and Paul Signac when he took on the Neo-Impressionist style at the

age of 54.
