International Week 2016

Dear parents, WOW is the only way I can describe this past week.

Obviously the major event of the week has been CAISSA, however there were lots of other things happening at school. Inflection, the consulting group, continues to interview all stakeholders in our com-munity. As they gather data and speak with people, they are sharing it with the leadership team and they are teaching us strategies that will help us develop solu-tions for our further development.

All students in Grades 9-11's sat the PSAT exam on Wednesday morning. The PSAT is an exam used to help prepare stu-dents for the SAT's, which are very im-portant in the college admission process.

On Wednesday afternoon, we held a full school PEP rally to gear up our supporters. We introduced the boys and girls volley-ball teams for the first CAISSA tournament this year. School spirit is alive and well. A group of MS girls have been working hard behind the scenes, forming a cheerleading team and they made a great impression at the rally and also at the opening ceremony for CAISSA.

Games have been played Thursday and Friday and the most exciting game so far, in my opinion was the second game where the ISPS Boys JV team beat our own varsi-ty team. The excitement in the gym was as if the boys’ JV had just won the tourna-ment.

CAISSA continues on Saturday and I en-courage all ISPS families to come support our Caimans. A huge thank you to all who have helped organize food, house stu-dents and coaches, supervise events, etc... with special thanks going to Mr Ali and his PE team, the PTO, and our own mainte-nance and support team. We can't thank you enough for all that you have done.

The ES students were treated to a mini sports event this morning, where they competed in houses in a variety of differ-ent fun games.

Reach Out, a HS service group, is hosting a concert this evening from 6:00-8:00pm tonight and your support of them would be appreciated. In addition, the MS is hosting their Halloween party in the cafe-teria from 6:00-8:00pm tonight.

This has indeed been a very busy week at ISPS and I hope that many of our stu-dents are able to get some much needed rest this weekend. Next week is our highly anticipated International Week, I look for-ward to seeing our students proudly wear-ing their national dress or showing sup-port for the designated themes in the week. Please do join us at the Parade of Nations Assembly next Wednesday at 1:00pm.

Enjoy the weekend.

Primary Years Program (PYP) Thank you to the parents who

attended the meeting on Wednes-day. We were able to answer your questions, and shared a planner to explain how a unit is taught.

One big idea that was discussed was that the students are learning key concepts that can transfer across disciplines. The PYP

has eight key concepts, and re-lated concepts that are included in the learning experiences. For ex-ample, if the students are studying conservation, then one of the key concepts would be responsibility.

A reminder that our teams are working on the PYP standards and prac-tices for the upcoming evaluation. The teachers are eval-uating all aspects of the program and collecting evidence to share with the evaluation team when they arrive early next year. We are on target with the self-study process.

Words this month: knowledgea-ble, tolerance and cooperation.

We are a learning community and we invest in developing our teachers. Ms. Sullivan, grade 4,

conducted a creativity workshop for our teachers on Tues-day. Teachers were given a set of objects, and asked to create a product. At the end of the workshop

groups were able to share their final product.

MakerSpaces are areas designat-ed for students to gather, to cre-ate, invent and learn. Collabora-tion, problem solving and creativi-ty are emphasized.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Angela Shahien PYP Coordinator

Elementary Notes

Dear Parents, Thank you to the parents who attended the PYP work-shop on Wednesday. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher for any concerns or questions about the program or your child’s progress. Measurement for Academic Progress (MAP) goal sheets were sent home last week, please review the goals with your child. Teachers have identified areas for improvement and they will continue to assess your child’s growth. IXL Math can be used for practice to boost or maintain skills. We encourage students to use IXL on a regular basis. Students in Grades 3-5 will receive their passwords for the ERB Writing Practice. They will be able to enter their topics into the writing program and receive im-mediate feedback on the elements of writing (word choice, organization, sentence structure etc.). We ex-pect our students to write on a variety of topics in preparation for the test that occurs in March 2017. You can help by ensuring that your child consistently use the writing tool to help them chart their own writing, and improve on the elements. During International Week, the students will have spe-cific days allocated for what they are allowed to wear. If you do not have the clothing for the days outlined, students can wear their regular school uniform. We do expect all students, parents and teachers to take part in the upcoming events. The topic, sustainable communities, will be used throughout the year, and some teachers have ideas of how they can integrate the theme into their learning units. Have a great weekend! Suzette Julien Elementary Principal

How do I know that my child is making progress in his/her subject areas? Teachers are consistently assessing your students using a variety of methods. Inquiry is one approach we use to allow the students to experiment and ask questions. Developing the stu-dents’ critical thinking skills are important and we want them to transfer their skills to other subject areas. As a parent you can meet with other parents and discuss your child’s progress. Check the work samples coming home; ask to see workbooks or other evidence in their folders. Ms. Solozano, Student Service Coordinator, assigns teachers to classes to work with the children in the classroom. That is another resource that informs us how your child is progressing. If your child has an individual learning plan, you will be asked to come in for a meeting to discuss your child’s aca-demic status.

Hello Everyone: For the month of October, anti-bullying month, students will be learning the three R’s of bullying – Recognizing, Re-fusing (if you feel safe), and Reporting. Last Guidance Class focused on recog-nizing bullying and coming up with a definition. PreK-1 students learnt that name-calling helps you to lose friends with the story of how Froggy lost all of his friends. Upper ES students used the bullying thumb ball and several scenari-os to determine whether common school behaviours were bullying or not. They learnt that not every negative or inappropriate behaviour between stu-dents or between friends is bullying, even if they are mean or disrespectful. Bullying behaviors, on the other hand, tend to be R.I.P – Repeated, Intentional and involves someone using Power in a hurtful way. We discussed each of these at length and decided that gossip and spreading rumors, even if done one time, counts as repeated since the story can be repeated by several people and be hurtful over and over again with each new person added. The kids enlightened me in several ways that they can use power in a hurtful way – using your knowledge or skills or size or how much money or possessions you have or how popular you are. Everyone agreed that these are good things if

used to help and support others but not to hurt or embarrass or make them feel not-good-enough. We also reinforced that fact that the more kindness we have in our school, there will be less room for bullying or mean behaviors. This brings me to the Kindness Tree that has taken off like a rocket! Kids are talk-ing about kindness more, they are notic-ing kindness more and most important-ly, they are motivated to act more kindly towards others. It began with getting a heart but now they seem just excited to notice others being kind and be kind themselves.

As always, thank you for continuing these conversations at home and please let me know if there is any way I can further support your child so that they get the best out of school. Next class will focus on how to refuse bullying and all the ways you can be-come an “Upstander” instead of being a Bystander. Enjoy last week’s Kindness Tree students and some of the students during Guidance class talking about Rec-ognizing Bullying. Kindest regards,

Ms. Hyndman,

Expression of Interest to serve on the board of The International School of PoS

By

ROBERT HADAD

ISPS BOARD PARENT REPRESENTATIVE

Dear ISPS Community,

I would like to express my willingness to serve as an Alternate Parent Director on the ISPS Board of Directors.

I presently have two sons at ISPS. My elder son is in Grade 8 and my younger son in Grade 4.

After graduating from The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, in 1988 with a BSc in Accounting, I began working as an auditor at KPMG Corporate Finance Limited. After a successful three-year tenure, I tendered my resignation, in order to pursue a dream of starting my own business.

Together with my two brothers John and Joseph, we formed Hadco Ltd. in 1992 and I hold the position of Group co-Chief Executive Officer. What started off as primarily a food and electrical import and distribution company has evolved into a dynamic and diverse group of companies with specialty in other areas such as lighting, ice cream cone manufacturing, bonded warehousing facilities, transport services and retail operations.

The following companies fall under the Hadco Group umbrella: Haagen Dazs, Peppercorns, Nova Lighting, The Lighthouse, Apadoca’s, G&M Warehousing, Sampson’s Transport, Happy Time Ice Cream Cones and Fresh Organics Ltd.

Hadco Ltd. has also recently embarked on a partnership with Phase II Pan Groove Steel Orchestra. I believe in promoting and supporting our local culture and see it as important to form a link between business and society. My goal with this venture is to enable the members of this band to use their resources and talents to be a sustainable entity all throughout the year and not just at Carnival time.

I served as a Board member of the Brian Lara Cancer Treatment Foundation from 2008 to 2010.

I understand that life is about balance, and spending quality time with family is a top priority. I am confident of my leadership skills and my reputation in the business community. I believe in a hands-on approach to solving problems and am committed to excellence. I am eager to make a positive difference wherever I can.

Sincerely,

Robert Hadad

The ISPS library is pleased to announce a new member of our library: Buddy, a Golden Retriever who is retired from the Canine branch of the police service. Buddy worked for the police service as an explosives dog searching for guns, ammunition and bombs. He should be taking up his position as a Read Dog from Wed, November 2, and he is scheduled to visit the school once a week. We have been working with Miss Solozano to identify students who would like to read to Buddy. Buddy will be accompanied by a retired

police officer from the canine branch when he visits the school. Buddy will be working in the AV room. Permission slips to visit with Buddy will be going out next week.

Fifth Grade Spanish Projects:

I want to migrate to... During the first unit the students reviewed the vocabulary using the AIM program. They got familiarized with the most commonly used words in Spanish from the program and applied that knowledge to present a project in which they explained “Where they would like to migrate to…” This unit goes parallel with the unit they are covering with their homeroom teacher.

“To be or not to be ...that is the question”

Shakespeare, William.

The following pieces are samples of Criterion C/ Communicating in response to spoken, written or visual text. Students were asked to interpret and construct meaning from an image presented along with a caption. They were asked to apply their understanding of SER and ESTAR by writing a song, poem or rap that captured ideas, opinions and feelings conveyed in the image.

El Rincón del Español: “Ser o Estar” ¡Ser o no Ser… he allí el dilema!

During term one, Phase 2 Language Acquisition students, worked on the ins and outs, of the infamous twins SER and ESTAR (the elusive verb To Be). For English speakers there is no question of how to use this verb: I am Jane, I am a teacher, I am in Trin-idad, I am walking, I am happy. However in Spanish, there are differ-

ent scenarios in which to use these two very special irregular verbs.

After tireless efforts, brain twisting activities and practices, here are some poems and songs that our students wrote to present their achievements in capturing the illustrious duo.

Middle School

During the first quarter, Grade 8 phase one students learnt how to greet others, convey personal in-formation and use classroom ex-pressions. They also worked col-laboratively in hands-on activities which required them to form sen-tences with vocabulary words and verbs provided by the teacher.

High School Enhancing language skills through authentic experiences - Field Trips to Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival:

We were fortunate that the 11th annual Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival featured a number of Spanish-Language films. Students of AP Spanish Language and Culture, Spanish 4, Spanish 3 and Spanish 2 saw either “Estaban” from Cuba or “Gente de Bien” from Colombia. Seeing foreign language films is a great opportunity for students to practice their comprehension skills. It is also a forum where they can connect with the daily lives and culture of the target language countries through engaging narratives.

Mi Héroe Personal: Enhancing language skills through personal associations -

Students in AP Spanish investigat-ed and presented their personal heroes highlighting their qualities, achievements and how they have influenced them. They will be asking the question “Who are the heroes in our community”

Enhancing language skills through creativity and imagination: The Spanish 3 students drew an imaginary animal which they described using the appropriate vocabulary.

Enhancing language skills through a deeper understanding of cultures:

The celebrations of 12th of October, a single day with many different titles - Día de La Hispanidad/ Día de la Raza/ Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural/ Fiesta Nacional/ Columbus Day - were an opportunity for Spanish 4 students to apply the concepts of Products, Practices and Perspectives to how this his-torical event is perceived in different Latin American cultures and in Spain. They read, listened to opinions and saw pictures of the celebrations to analyse how the cultural practices and perspectives differ from country to country.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK OCTOBER 24TH –28TH

17 Goals to Transform the World

E ach year, around October 24th, United Nations Day, the Inter-national School of Port of Spain celebrates “International

Week”. The school welcomes the oppor-tunity to honor the diversity of our com-munity with special events that highlight the work of the United Nations. This year at ISPS, October 24th to 28th has been declared “International Week”. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and en-sure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Here at ISPS, The UN, and the SDG will be highlighted at the Parade of Nations Assembly during our International Week celebrations on Wednesday October 26th at 1:00 p.m. in the School’s gym-nasium. The school is using this week to show our support of this global initia-tive and to encourage everyone in the community to become involved: How do we do this? What can we do? And how do we sustain what we do?

One train of thought: We already have in place various recycling projects, pa-per, glass and plastic. Is it possible that we might move forward now with com-posting; turn our perishable waste into useful fertilizer? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to then use this compost to enrich a garden, or two or even three particularly themed gar-dens, each one conceived, created and sustained by a section of the school? How can we make this happen? How could you contribute to this venture?

We welcome anyone knowledgeable in various aspects of composting and or gardening to communicate and collabo-rate with us to bring this thought into reality. In addition for our “International Week”, our students, our staff and our community are invited to join us in mak-ing a statement by adopting our dress themes for that week. We all look for-ward to the Parade of ISPS Nations As-sembly, and all of our parents and guardians are invited to attend. “National Dress” is the theme wear for that day. We will be inviting representa-tives from the Diplomatic Missions in Trinidad. Do not miss the culminating event, The International Food Festival (IFF), spear-headed by our hard working PTO. We thank our parents who have stepped forward to coordinate a booth, assist with decorating and helping in many other ways to highlight our diverse community. This event will be held on Friday November 4th, from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. It promises to be once again, an event to remember!

ISPS Highlights Goal 11 — Sustainable Communities

“Be a global citizen. Act with passion and compassion. Help us make this world safer and more sustainable today and for the generations that will follow us. That is our moral responsibility.”

UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon
