Personal Data EncodingFigure 9.11 shows an Illinois driver’s license number: I225-1637-2133. From this number we

can learn the person’s date of birth, sex and

much about the person’s name if we are taught the encoding system used.

Soundex Coding SystemIn one scheme, the first four characters of a license number are

obtained by applying this system to the surname.

1) Delete all h’s and w’s.

2) Assign numbers to the remaining letters

a, e, i, o, u, y, 0 b, f, p, v 1

c, g, j, k, q, s, x, z 2 d, t 3

l 4 m, n 5

r 6

3) If 2 or more letters with the same numerical value

are adjacent, omit all but the first.

4) Delete the first character of the original name if still

present.

5) Delete all occurrences of a, e, i, o, u, and y.

6) Keep only the first 3 digits of the remaining letters;

add trailing zeros if fewer than three remain;

precede the 3 digits by the first letter of the

surname.

Encoding Other Data

The last five digits of Illinois and Florida driver’s license numbers capture the

year and date of birth as well as the sex.

In Illinois, the day of the year is assigned a three-digit number with January 1

being 001. Each month is assumed to have 31 days so March first is 063. This

is used for males. For females the number 600 is added. The last two digits of

the year of birth separated a dash are listed 5th and 4th from the end.

Male born October 13, 1940 4-0292 (9*31 + 13 = 292)
