member of our school team. If you call the school, Jodie is likely to be the rst person you talk to.
Fun Facts: Jodie has been working in administration for many years. One of the positions she found most rewarding
was with an organisation that provided tenancy and support for people with disabilities. She is very happy for the
opportunity to continue supporting the community in the school environment. Jodie has lived in Canberra most of her
life. She is originally from Bega but wasn’t a fan of Bega cheese for many years! Jodie loves soaking up the beauty and
tranquility of the beach and as mother to two children full of boundless energy, she spends many hours cheering on
the sideline of many a sporting eld! Her fur baby is a loving Stay whom her children named Lolly and following
that theme, it isn’t surprising their previous pet turtle was named Skittles.

Science week
Satellite sele in the making
What an exciting week..........
Exploding Watermelons
During Science Week we joined a nationwide experiment to nd out how many rubber bands it takes to explode a
watermelon. This involved measuring a number of parameters of the watermelon such as size and mass. Rubber bands
exert a force on the watermelon, and as more rubber bands are added to the watermelon, the force being applied
increases. This force is stored in the watermelon as pressure and when this pressure is sucient, the watermelon
explodes. After this, some further measurements were made, such as the thickness of the rind. We have submitted our
results to the national coordinator and now await the national results to enable further analysis of the data.
So how many rubber bands to make a watermelon blow its top? 437 .
Satellite Sele
The Satellite Sele was to happen during Science week. Due to the inclement weather the satellite could not see us, so
we put our sign out on Tuesday 23 August. It was frosty and sunny, so we hope to have a great image for the next
newsletter.

New Academy of Future Skills hub for NorthernCanberra
On Tuesday 11 August, the new Academy of Future Skills northern hub, 'Dhawura Ngadjung'—Ngunnawal words
meaning earth and water, was ocially opened by the Education Minister.
Together with Mungga-iri Jingee, meaning touch the stars, the two Academies recognise that Australia was and is
Aboriginal land. This new hub for the Academy, based at the UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra, forms
part of an ACT Government commitment to build on Canberra's Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) capability and make these subjects more accessible to all students.
The Academy provides access to high quality facilities where both students and teachers can develop skills that are
transferrable to many of the fastest growing occupations. This skills-based learning space staed by specialist
teachers brings students and teachers to the Academy and brings expertise in STEM subjects to schools all over
Canberra.
Dhawura Ngadjung is a shared facility with UC SSC Lake Ginninderra so that college students benet daily from
improved facilities as they study their STEM subjects (Science, technology, engineering and mathmatics). The
opening allowed students in the college GiSTEM group and the college Hospitality program to showcase their skills to
ocials who visited for the opening ceremony. This new facility and the work across these important education
subjects will help students in the ACT to tread a broader path as they develop their individual interests, knowledge and
skills.

The 2020 social distancing restrictions created a major challenge for the traditional sitting of the Australian
Mathematics Competition (AMC). However in Mathematics, problem solving is a key skill when trying to turn a
challenge into an opportunity.
So for 2020, school students where provided the exibility of sitting the exam at dierent times within their own
classrooms over a week. Once a student started the exam they had to nish it during that session, but it allowed more
students than ever to participate and comply with no large gatherings.
At UCSSC Lake Ginninderra, we had the largest ever AMC participation on record, with 183 students.
We look forward to the results later this year.

Academic Excellence Program – Feature Story (byClaudia Martin, year 11)
Hi, my name is Claudia Martin and I am a year 11 student in the Academic Excellence
Program.
I am passionate about media and videography and enjoying using my spare time to create
short lms with my friends. In which my dog, Millie, is a reoccurring actor. Although she
is turning 14 this month, she still likes to think of herself as a puppy and has a lot of
energy that she dedicates into sleeping.
As well as creating videos, I also enjoy creating music in band on the clarinet. Currently, I
am interested in journalism and a personal inspiration of mine is Peter Greste, not only
because of his work but how he persevered through challenges to make a change.
The feature article is inspired by the 1961 science-ction short story, Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. from
the perspective of a government ocial. In Harrison Bergeron, Vonnegut portrayed television as a sedating and
desensitising prop for the government to make an example of equality. Social media has become a key instrument in
the BlackLivesMatter movement, a tool for protesters to elucidate these polarised times. I thought this technological
revolution and its ability to connect people worldwide is important to recognise and reect on the change in
application and attitudes towards technology.
I hope you enjoy my feature article!

Lake G Chill - Wellbeing week
In week 6, students from the Student Community Group and teachers from across the
school hosted 'Lake G Chill Week'.
The week was designed to create opportunities for fun and to remind us of the importance
to take breaks during a busy period of the semester. There was yoga, a walk around our
school to identify indigenous plants, Makerspace workshops, musical performances, and
bake sales and plant sales. The week concluded with 'Wear It Purple Day', a day that
strives to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow
young people.
Throughout the week we raised money for Lifeline Canberra and donated $422.20. Later in
the semester, we'll be visited by some alpacas for another Lake G Chill Week.

Chicago Musical
During Chill Week the musical community opended the doors at the rehearsal for Chicago,
which will open at the end of October. With three ambitious numbers on the rehearsal
schedule and for the rst time synching up singing, tap dancing, playing instruments,
acting and introducing costume elements such as roller skates-the community were put
through their paces.
First out of the gate was songstress Selene and her Velma counterparts (Ella and Lillian) singing and acting out ‘When
You’re Good to Mama’ a classic jazz number that cheekily references the corrupt nature of the Chicago Correctional
Facility that the character Matron “Mama” Morton presides over.
Then the challenge that is ‘Razzle Dazzle’ was slotted together. This number includes signicant integration of tap
dancing, singing, acting, circus tricks and band interaction. With an audience present, the clever ensemble were
required to pivot on their axis so their rehearsed choreography and singing could be appreciated. As a rst go at
bringing all of these elements together live, the rst exciting sparkle of integration was experienced by cast, band,
crew and shared with their supportive audience.
The open rehearsal nished with a bang when Jazmine (supported by Justice and Luke) sung ‘Funny Honey’-a
beautiful but ultimately humorous jazz number of the character Roxie’s devotion-turned-rage against her husband
Amos.
The Musical cast, crew and band are now into the second half of intensive rehearsals for Chicago. The opportunity to
showcase our progress to a supportive audience signals the start of our marketing campaign, so you can expect to see
and hear more about Chicago coming to a theatre very near you.

Sustainability and well-being have been the two big focuses of the Makerspace in term 3. One of our biggest highlights
was the E-waste and phone repair workshop led by year 12 student Zeal. Throughout this workshop, Zeal provided his
peers with advice on how to get started repairing their own electronics to reduce their contribution to E-waste, while
saving some money in the process.
As part of Wellbeing Week, Makerspace attendees were able to learn about plant care in a special student organised
bonus workshop. We also made our own cloth masks using our newly acquired sewing machine. Other term 3
workshops included an introduction to our new ScanNCut machine, balloon modelling and badge making.
To get involved in Makerspace workshops, come to the library during Wednesday H line or have a chat with Dana.

Term 3 Art Happenings
A highlight of our Art Education program is the inclusion of our students work in external
exhibitions. This year the showcase exhibition for the arts in ACT Government schools
‘Enter the Limelight’ went online with a virtual gallery. It was great to see once again
several of our students’ work selected for display. As this is a collection of the best work
from across Canberra it is a great validation for the quality of our students work. Well
done Imogen, Jules, Max, Mizuki, and Zoie.
Students are exploring installation art and selecting a part of the school to give it an art makeover. As you walk around
the school keep an eye out for these splashes of creativity brightening up our concrete walls and other spaces.
In response to student demands the Artroom has been hosting an Art Club during Friday afternoon H lines. Students
have come to extend their art practice and to just have some fun making art. If you would like to come along, swing by
the Artroom and catch up with Terry.

Sports Report
Sports scheduled for Semester 1 sports were included in the Term 3 program. The basketball teams completed the
competition by winning the State titles for a record consecutive time. The girls had a very unique preparation by
competing against full strength college boys teams in the Northside competition and convincingly beating Copland,
Hawker and Dickson College on their way.
The College participated in the boys League & girls League Tag one day competitions, we came away with some good
wins and enjoyed the competitive matches.
In week 4 the AFL and Volleyball one day titles were held. Our boys AFL team had a very successful day competing in
close and competitive matches. The boys eventually nished runners up on countback after beating the previously
undefeated top team in their nal match. Our Girls AFL team put on a dominant display going the day undefeated and
winning the State title for the rst time since 2015. The Volleyball Schools Cup was held on Friday of week 4 at the
Lyneham Hockey Centre. Much like Basketball, the College has a rich and successful history in Volleyball. This history
continued when our boys won the title for 20th time and our girls won in convincing fashion with our year 11 team
beating our year 12 in the nal.
Term 3–Thursday Interschool Sports in Progress Netball–Our girls have started the season exceptionally well and are
currently undefeated. Highlighted by a 52-1 victory over Lake Tuggeranong. Finals will take place early next Term.
Futsal–Both our boys and girls teams look like they are headed to the nals. The boys are undefeated and have high
hopes on winning the State title, and our girls are hoping to win their 3rd State futsal title in a row. Volleyball–both
our boys and girls teams look almost unbeatable. Hopefully they can keep their unbeaten run going.
A big thank you to the sta who were almost more excited than the students to return to interschool sport and have
put in a lot of extra hours supporting our students’ passion. We have had more students than ever before wanting to
play interschool sport.

Message from the Minister for Education and EarlyChildhood Development
In the ACT there are 88 public schools, over 49,000 public school students and around
3,800 educators. But of course, I understand that for each of us as parents, the most
important school is the school our children go to. That’s why I want to make sure that
every public school is a great school.
The ACT Government is upgrading and expanding public schools to make sure that
learning environments are accessible and sustainable.
The government is committed to ensuring that every public school has the infrastructure
to support high-quality education and that’s why the government has been investing
more than $115 million to upgrade public schools right across the Territory.
Here at UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra the government has provided:
additional agpoles to display the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ags, to recognise and
respect Australia’s rst people, and demonstrate our commitment to reconciliation and an inclusive and
welcoming community;
greater thermal comfort in some learning spaces through new ventilation systems and solar-reective window
tinting;

draught proong around the school to improve energy eciency, co-funded with the school;
upgrades to the science labs and student toilets, co-funded with the school;
the conversion of existing rooms into learning spaces for the Academy of Future Skills, co-funded with the
school; and
the conversion of existing spaces into a new calming space and an outdoor seating sensory area, co-funded with
the school.
Trip hazards were also addressed at the school as part of the ACT Government’s $35 million fast track stimulus
program to support local businesses and keep Canberrans employed.
Every child and family has a place in ACT public schools regardless of their background or life circumstances. That’s
why this investment into public school infrastructure goes beyond just the basic things that allow learning and
teaching to take place. The ACT Government invests in public schools to make sure that every student has what they
need to be included, and to learn and develop their interests, passions and life skills.
The ACT Government has upgraded heating and cooling systems, reducing polluting emissions and making
temperatures comfortable and conducive to learning in over 40 older public schools across Canberra.
The government also provided 4,000 Chromebooks to schools at the beginning of this school year and a further 3,000
Chromebooks and 500 iPads were purchased for use during the COVID-19 pandemic to assist with remote learning.
Schools have seen upgraded classrooms, toilets, libraries, canteens and bike shelters, as well as gardens, landscaping
and playground areas in schools to make sure that these spaces are positive and accommodating.
As Canberra grows, the government is making sure that schools grow with it. Every child has the right to access
education and the ACT Government is making sure that this right is equally ensured for every young person.

Legal aid support in ACT colleges
The provision of legal support is an important oering for vulnerable youth. Young people can face
diculties in accessing legal services when required due to distance, service availability, the
disinclination of parents, the intimidating and formal atmosphere of many legal services and/or a lack of knowledge
about the law. Schools provide an important opportunity to engage and educate young people about the law, and an
avenue to provide direct legal support to vulnerable young people.
The ACT Education Direction together with Legal Aid ACT are pleased to oer the following free services to our College
students and their families across the ACT:
College Drop-in Centre
Legal Liaison Ocers will provide a drop-in service at each college once per fortnight, to improve access to legal
assistance for students through the introduction of a free and condential service. The drop-in centre for students
will not require bookings.
Individual Appointments
This will allow College students and/or their parents or carers to make an appointment with a Legal Liaison Ocer at
their school.
