comparedtoRosenthalsfamousshot(duetothedesireofmentryingtogetourflagraised).Thomasshotthisshortlyafter5PMthedaythetowersfell.HestoodattheNorth-westcorneroftheTradeCenterfootprint,nearapedestrianwalkwaythatconnectedtotheWorldTradeCenter.Thefirefighterswereabout150yardsawayandthecrumpledremainsoftheoncegreattowerswereabout100yardsbeyondthat,heusedatelephotolenstoshootthethreefirefighters,twofromBrooklynbasedLadderCompany157GeorgeJohnsonandDanMcWilliamsandthethirdBillyEisengreinfromRescueUnitTwo.FranklinhadtalkedhiswayontoatugboattogetacrosstheHudsonRiverandarrivedattheWorldTradeCenteraroundnoonafterbothtowershadcollapsedandtherescuewasmovingintofullswing.Soyoumypatrioticreadersaresaying"whatsthecharterboatconnectionyouspokeof"?Wellyou

Shenoticedtheflagwasmissingwhentheycametoinspecttheyachtfordamageaftertheattack.OtheryachtownersandcrewsinformedShirleythatitwasindeedher

yachtsflagthathadbeenraisedasasymbolofAmericancourageatGroundZero.Thethreefirefighterslatersignedanaffidavitthattheydidremovetheflagfromherboatanditwastheveryonetheyraisedthatday.

footbronzestatuewasdedicatedattheNationalFallenFirefightersMemorialParkatEmmitsburg,MD.Nooneknowswhentheflag

switchwasmade,daysafterorwhileitwasontourbutaninvestigationcontinuesbyallpartiesinvolved.Theflaghadanappraisedvalue

of$525,000.TheowneroftheStarofAmericadidnotfairsowell.TheirofficelocatedintheWorldTradeCentergoneandthemstrugglingfinanciallyaf-ter9/11,welltheyhadtoclosetheircharteryachtbusinessinlate2008,yettheystillwanttofindtheflaganddonateittotheSmithsonianInstitution.AsShirleyputit"Theonlygoodmemorythatcameoutof9/11wastheraisingoftheflagfromourboatoverGroundZero,thatmomentshowninthenowfamousphotogaveusasmuchhopeastherestofAmerica".

Alothasbeenwrittenaboutthelastfirefightersoutofthetowers,thelastworkers,thelastpoliceorEMT'swhowerenearthelastout.Everyonewhodidmakeitouthassaidithashadanamazingimpactontheirlives,andyouknowitshould.Theconfusion,thesmoke,burningjetfuelandnoisethattheyallovercame,allthewhilemakingtheirwaydown30,50,a100storiesbeforethegreattowersimplodedontheirownweight,110storiesofsteelandglassallcomingdownyesitwouldchangeyou.ButIwantedtofindoutwhowasthelastpersonfoundalive,whomadeitoutofthishor-ribledayandwithsomeresearchandsomedeterminationIfoundher.

Itwasjustafter12:30PMonSept.12th.2001theWorldTradeCentertowershadfallen27hoursearlier.GenelleGuzman,thirtyyearsoldandasinglemotherofa12yearoldlayinsideatwistedmassofsteel,cablesandglass.Itwasdarkand

sheremembershotlikeanovenfromtheragingfiresbelowher.Herheadpinnedbyconcreteandsteel,herlegstwistedinstairwellandbothhadgonenumbmanyhoursearlier.Onlyherlefthandwasfree,shetriedusingittotap,tomovedebrisaroundbuttonoavail.Shecouldhearrescuersvoices,sirens,eventhebackupalarmsfromtrucks.Yesmyfriendsshetriedcallingoutbutthedustandwithaparchedthroat,shecouldbutwhisper.Itwasanagonizingwaitforrescueatfirstshethoughtandthenfordeath,shesaysshetalkedwithGodandtheAngelsoften.Sheremembersthinking"Iknewthisbuildingconsistedof110storiesandIknewthatnoonewasgoingtofindmeunder90somethingfloors".

But27hourslater,afterthebuildingandtheworldcamedownaroundGenelle,sheheardoneofthefirefighterssay"Wehaveasurvivor",therewouldalsobetwovolunteerswhodroveinfromfromMassaschusettsandapoliceofficerwithhisrescuedogfromNovaScotiathatwouldpartakeintherescuethatwouldmakeGenelleGuzmanapartofhistoryasthelastpersonpulledalivefromthetwistedrubblethatwasoncetheWorldTradeCenter.Therewereanestimated25,000workersinthesevenbuildingcomplexoftheWorldTradeCenterandat8:46AMSept.11,2001thefirstoftwo

hijackedjetlinerswouldstrikethenorthtowerandinwhatwouldbecomeoneofthemostepiclargebuildingevacuationsinhistory,mostwouldmakeitout.Butwhenthetowersfell2800ormorepeoplediedwithover6000injured.

Only20peopletrappedintherubblewouldsurvivewithmostfoundwithinthefirstfewhoursofrescuework.AFirstUnionBankworkerTomCona-vancrawledwithanothermanthrough30feetofconcrete,heatandcablesintheundergroundshoppingmall,gettingoutonly29minutesbeforetheNorthTowerwouldfall.Thenorthtowerwasstruckat8:46amandwouldremainstandingfor102minutesafterimpactthesouthtowerwasstruckat9:03amandremaineduprightfor56minutesitwouldtakeeachofthem12secondstofall.

OneofGuzmansco-workersPasqualeBuzzellipassedoutinthestairwellintheNorthTowerasitfellawayfromhisfeet,heawokeatop60feetofrubble.14othersincluding12firefighters,massedtogetherinthenorthstairwellalso,buttheirsectionheldtogetherastonsofburningrubblefellaroundthemandaround

noontheybattled,clawedandclimbedthoseverystairsandtheystoodatopwhatwasoncetheWorldTradeCenter.PortAuthorityPoliceOfficerWillJimenowascutoutlaterthateveningandhispartnerSgt.JohnMcLoughlinwaspulledoutofthewreckagearound7AMonSept.12th.

ManynewsreportshadSgt.McLoughlinas"Thelastpersonout"but6hourslaterGenelleGuzmanwhohadbeenaPortAuthorityClerkforonly9monthswouldtrulybethelastpersonoutofofthistragedy.Sheoftenwonderswhy?Shewasn'tanystrongerorsmarterthantheothers,noshenevertooka"Howtosurvive"a110storybuildingcollapseonyou

HerlastdayattheoldofficewouldstartoutasanormalperfectsunnyNewYorkmorningonthe64th.floorofthenorthtower.16workerswaitedtherethatfatefullday.Thejetlinerhadjustcutthroughtheirbuilding30storiesabovethem,therestoftheirfloorhademptiedout30minutesago.Whyhadthese16stayedbehindyoumayask?SomesaidthePortAuthorityinstructedthemtostay,butofficialtranscriptsshowthatthecommandingofficerforthePortAuthority,Capt.AnthonyWhitakerhadinfactorderedafull

evacuationbeforethesecondjetlinerhitthesouthtower.Shewillnotanswerwhyonordersfromheremployer.ItisknownthatMr.Buzzelliandagrouptriedtosealthedoorstopreventthesmokeandburn-ingjetfuelfromenteringtheroom,butwettowels

andducttapewouldnotstopit,soafteranhourthegroupof16wouldheadforstairwellB.Mr.Buzzelliwouldleadtheway,andGuzmanwithher2inchheelsonwouldgrabherbestfriendshandRosaGonzalesandthegroupwoulddescenddown54,44,34,thenumberscountedoff

agonizinglyslow,shethenfeltahorrendousshudderlikeanearthquakebeginning,itwasthesouthtowerimplodingbuttheydidn'tknowthatinthedarknessofstairwellB,northtower.

Asthegroupchanted"Wearealmostthere"Guzmanwouldslowatthe13th.flooritwastimeforthehighheelstocomeoffandasshereacheddown,sheheardaviolentexplosionandnevermadeanotherstep.Shesays"ThewallIwasfacingjustopenedanditthrewmeontheotherside".Sheremem-bersherfriendRosatryingtoclimbthestairs,buttherubbleraineddownuponthemandshewouldneverseeRosaGon-zalesagain.Genellesaid"Everythingjustkeptcomingharderandharder,Ijustkeptmyheaddown.IdontknowhowIendedupthewayIwas.IdontknowhowIlanded".Shethenremembersamancallingforhelp,thennothing.Thebuildingstillshakinganddebrisshiftingandfalling.Thencompleteanduttersilence.Andsheremembersthedarkness,unabletoevenseeherwatch,unabletomove.Hotfromthefiresandwetfrombrokenpipes,withheronlyfreehandshefeltaroundandgraspedsomethingsoft,itwasabody.Afterherrescueshewouldfindshelandedonadeadfirefighter,withinfeetwasanother.Anditwouldbethereflectorsofafirefighterscoatthatbroughtthe5rescuerstothis7storypileofwallandrubble.AstheyexaminedthecoattheyheardGenelleGuzman,anironworkerarrivedwithaportabletorchandcutawaythesteeltrappingherforthepast27hours.Shewasthenputonastretcherandpassedmantomandownthemassoftwistedsteelandrock.Asshenearedthebottomofherwouldbetombthelastpersonrescuedon

Sept11thwouldask"AmIoutyet?".Ofthose16peoplewhostartedoutfromthat64th.flooranhouraftertheirtowerwashit,onlyGenelleGuzmanandPasqualeBuzzelliwouldlive.Yeahimokwiththeanswerbeinga"miracle",Ithinkweneedmoreofthem.Ofall20survivorsfoundafterthetragedyallwouldbefromthenorthtowerandnonefromthesouthone.Althoughnonumbersareexact2606diedintheWTCtowers,343firefighterswoulddie,60policeofficersand8EMTworkers.Americanflight11had87soulsonboardandUnited17560.AtthePentagon125woulddiealongwith59onAmericanflight77.AndUnited93wouldhave40heroesperish.Therewouldbe105billiondollarslosttoNYCbusinessinthemonthafterwardsaloneandtheNYSEwoulddrop685pointswhenitdidreopen. SopleasemypatrioticpageturnersdosomethingthisSeptember11th.andeveryonethatfollows.Yesourmili-taryandblackopshavedoneanamazingjobinpreventinganotherlargescaleattack.Butwemustrememberthiseventthistragedywemustkeepastrongmilitaryandintelligencenetworkoutthere.Weandourchildrenmust"Neverforget"thedaytheterroristsbroughtanunthinkableplantoanationcaughtoffguard.Toourcapital,tothetwogreatestbuildingsinourlandandtotheskiesoverPennsylvaniawhereourfirstpatriotsofthiswaronterrorshowedthemAmericanfightandresolve.Rememberallthatwereinvolvedandallthatstillare,rememberthebusinessownerswhocouldntmakeitinashatteredeconomy,rememberthethousandsthatdiedattheTradeCenters,thePentagon,thefirefighters,policeandEMT'sandalltheairlinepassengersonthose4doomedflightsonthatpostcardpictureperfectdaytenyearsagowhenAmericawasattackedatthreelocations.Yestenyearslaterwehaveovercomethis,rebuiltthedamageandhunteddownandkilledmanyoftheleadersandmastermindsofthatterribleday.WehaveourflawsmyfellowpatriotsbutonethingothercountrieshavefoundoutisthatfromPearlHarbortotheCubanMissleCrisisto
