    Well first of all I would like to apologize for

    Augusts article it seems that in my rush to get my article in I sent in the one from august of 2009 and I know some of you caught that, but I was also trying to pack and get my bike serviced before I left on my trip that Ive been talking about all year, so let me tell you about it.

    We made plans to meet up in Iowa city so my dad and myself headed out at around noon and the plan was to meet the rest of our riding party { who by the way are from new London Wi. And Green Bay Wi.} at 6 pm at the first rest area west of Iowa City on interstate 80 and let me tell you are timing couldnt have been any better, Ted & Jodi and Todd & Rachelle got there about ten minutes before us we actually could have beaten them but I thought we had time to kill, well we decided to try and make Des Moines before dark which didnt happen we made it but it was around 10 pm and yes we hit rain before we made it there. I know everyone is saying who gives a F%$# about the rain. Well the reason that I mentioned it is we hit rain every F%$#ING day except the day we road home and it was a 2 wk trip. Dont get me wrong it wasnt all day downpours but never the less it was rain that was long enough and hard enough it constituted rain gear, but it was still better than working.

    We had made our plans to get an early start the next morning and try to make it to Fort Collins Co. by the night fall, but as with any good plan shit happens so yes again riding after dark but again we made our destination in one piece. Oh yea before I forget my dad was riding his 2010 HD trike and Ted & Jodi was on their 2002 HD Electra Glide Todd was riding a 2007 Dyna Wide Glide and I was on my 2008 HD Ultra now Rachelle was riding { now heres the kicker } a 2009 250 Kawasaki Ninja and I got to tell you its a lot of riding on the dressers but to ride that distance on a crotch rocket insane, and just had to let you know because it just F&^%ED me up to have seen her ride that far on that bike.

    Ok enough said lets get back to the trip. We got an early start and headed to Poudre Canyon which is hwy. 14 outside Fort Collins it was our first day in Colorado on this trip and if you have never been in this state I urge you to go its know wander they call it gods country every turn is more awesome than the one prior. And just when you think you had just seen the greatest view you have ever seen you round the corner and youre mesmerized again. Well you wont be disappointed you made a turn onto this wonderful canyon road with the river running alongside and the steep canyon walls you cant go slow enough to take it all in but keep your eyes on the road because there is an abundance of wildlife also so be alert, well its about 100 miles or so and you hit the town of Walden gas up here because you dont want to run out of gas in the mountains. Well we decided we were going to go through Rocky Mountain Natl Park that afternoon so we headed south and enter the park from the west entrance which when we got to Grandby we had another rain delay for an hour or two so we took a break and got a couple of beverages at the local watering hole. After about four beers we decided we better get rolling if we were going to make it through the park before dark which we barely made it but not before we hit a storm at the top of the mountains and did I mention the road was removed so we had to drive in muddy conditions down off the top of the mountain not what I had in mind so once we were able to hit the blacktop again I felt a hell of a lot better. We made it to Estes Park by dark found a place to camp and said three days in havent had camp set up before dark yet . But this was getting ready to change. The next morning was a perfect one, at breakfast we decided to get teds bike looked at. He was having some braking problems so we headed to the nearest HD shop which was THUNDER MOUNTAIN HARLEY DAVIDSON in Loveland naturally

    we didnt have an appointment but the folks in service squeezed him in only to find his rear caliper needed to be replaced. And as fate would have it they didnt have one and only 4 shops in the country did, it was a Monday and the closest shops were closed so it was noon on Monday the decision was made to overnight the part from an HD shop in Wisconsin but Ted had no choice. The next morning we arrived around 10 am and again with no appointment the service department got him in and in a couple hours we were back on the road , Ted said it was just an expensive bike wash , but how else can you look at it after all we just started a 2 wk trip and he didnt want to ruin his or our vacation, which the hold over didnt have any effect on our trip all we had was time and no agenda , we would discuss at breakfast where we wanted to go and if we made it we did if we didnt then we didnt . Well Todd had said before we left the only thing he wanted to do was eat at this Mexican restaurant outside Denver, lets just say we did and that was the last idea we followed from him. We will leave it here till next month. F$#@ the way I ramble on it could take me six month to explain this trip, just joking. Well thats all for now till next month

    THE CURIOUS JOURNAL OF ZACHARIA ELDERS

    Jan. 3rd: Since obtaining the strange Tome, I have felt compelled to consume all the knowledge it has to offer. My days and nights are filled pouring over this fantastic volume of macabre other-worldly beasts and blasphemous rites. It seems that long forgotten Gods referred to as The Outer Gods and lesser beings called Great Old Ones make up the core of this strange mythos, this pantheon of the bizarre.

    Jan. 21st: Not only does this text contain a wealth of information on unknown Gods, spectacular abominations and the far off places from which they hail, it also covers the alien occult practices on which this horrific culture thrives. I have found several incantations; spells if you will. Many of them have components so obscure and unobtainable one could never hope to compile them. Still others ask for absolutely horrific rites to be performed, such as the slicing away of ones own flesh for the purpose of consumption. Or even more unthinkable, the flesh of innocent others.

    Jan. 28th: I, after long consideration, have chosen an incantation with which to experiment. It is a most interesting ritual whose components are attainable but complicated. It involves intricate patterns to be rendered upon the ground in very specific dimensions, and the oddest thing of all, the constant droning of flutes.6 to be exact. Where on earth will I find six flautists?

    Feb. 10th: When away from the book for long periods of time I experience what can only be explained as mental hunger, An aching void that yearns to be filled with what only the Cthaat Aquadingen can provide.

    Feb. 16th: Headaches and a persistent itchy scalp have begun to accompany the hunger. I must spend more time unraveling the secrets of this priceless antiquity. It is the only thing that eases the pain and the ever building pressure in my head.

    Feb. 26th: It is evident the summoning spell that I disregarded for lack of components (namely the flautists) has been in my subconscious mind as of late. For, last night I dreamt of it. My view was from above, as though I were floating. Below I could see the intricate pattern rendered in bright red upon a great slab of rock. Its face showing through the earth and grass, then came next the most peculiar part of the dream. As if from afar, came a low rasping buzz. With each second passing it grew louder. It came, this sound, from all directions, like thousands of cicadas stridulating in unison. Growing louder and louder till all at once, when reaching its peak, this cacophony gave up its dissonance and came clear. All the while this droning invisible choir had been saying my name!

    Feb. 27th: I realized this morning that the large flat slabs of stone from my dream were familiar. Stones such as these were plentiful around an area I used to frequent in my youth. A place called Pickmans Mill. I am at this moment completing preparations to make a day trip to the mill. It is there that I will at last recreate the images for the summoning incantation that I am inexplicably obsessed with. It will be most grand to see the summoning circle for the unnamed servitor come to fruition. Easther seems upset that Im leaving, shes been rather quiet and stand offish as of late.

    Feb. 28th: Upon my return from Pickmans Mill, Easther met me at the door, her face heavy with worry. She had quite an array of concerns to bring to my attention. Not the least of which was the fact that I had not eaten but a few meals in the past month. Also that I was at times staying awake for days on end locked away in my workshop. She spoke in length of how much she missed me and how worried she was for my health, both physical and mental. Finally she added my complete disinterest in my daughter and her 2 small children (my grandchildren). This last thing, I realize fully, should mean a great deal to me. The truth of the matter is that it does not. Frankly, I have more important things to do, things no one would understand except my lovely Easther. Surely she will see the amazing wealth of information that has fallen into my hands. Ill show her the wonder of the Mythos soon.

    March 3rd: Today Im returning to the stone slab at Pickmans Mill. Ill ask Easther to accompany me. Ill explain as best I can of the book and its contents. I imagine her excitement. She and I will spend our time together uncovering the eons old rites of the cult of Cthulhu. Together we will hear his call. Oh, how I love my Easther. I shall dedicate the reading of the summoning to her. She will be so thrilled. Perhaps we will make love in the circle rolling about on the stone. Yes Easther, we will have a glorious day, a glorious life.

    March 4th: I hardly know where to start. Last nights turn of events have changed my life forever. As Easther looked on, I read aloud from the Cthaat Aquadingen. But alas, as I spoke the archaic verses I knew it was only the beginning. It was precisely at the time I succumbed to my fate that I heard them. The flutes! Droning, whistling, then falling into a chaotic dirge that filled the night air all about Pickmans Mill. The final component had been provided, a gift bestowed on me by the Great Cthulhu himself! And then for the second time my name was spoken. Upon my head was placed a crown of acceptance. No more did the pressure build in my head. Never again would I claw at my scalp to relieve the insistent itching. I had been initiated. The flutes slowly faded away and I was left in the silence of the woods. I turned to see Easther sitting upon the ground. She rocked to and fro, all the while speaking in great run-on sentences. She told of bloated frog like abominations floating about in the woods all around us. She laughed and cried at the same time when she spoke of the flutes they held, and how the piping wouldnt stop. Then she fell silent and continued to rock back and forth. Something caught my eye! I turned to see the central circle before me pulsating with a radiant green light! Then starting low and distant as it had before, the cacophonous drone of what sounded like the song of thousands of cicadas grew even louder.

    It began to take shape, if one could really refer to it as having shape at all. The thing before me had no constant form. It shook and stretched high, only to flatten and turn in on itself.     The Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse has been on the road and attending rallies every weekend since Sturgis. All of them have been uniquely different yet all share a common bond. The events include the Porcupine Bash in upper Michigan, the Summertime Bikes and Blues Festival in Freeport Texas, The Texas rally in Somerville Texas and the Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest in Missouri.

    The Porcupine Bash started as a party to celebrate an anniversary for the Porcupine Press, a monthly magazine, but morphed into a three-day event with proceeds benefiting the local veterans home. The amount of work the captain and his staff put into this rally was only exceeded by the pleasure the veterans expressed while attending the event. They even were treated to a concert by my friend blues guitarist Dan Lawson.

    The Freeport event included a bike raffle featuring an Amen motorcycle by bike building legend Mike Brown. I was fortunate to meet Mike, a man whose creations I have admired for years, I hope to see him at future events. This rally also featured great blues music and BBQ and was extremely well organized.

    The Texas rally was an adult rally on beautiful lake Somerville put on by Damon Dave with top notch entertainment. The event featured girls from the Penthouse Club in Houston who danced on our Strip poles and were very friendly to all.

    Last but certainly not least was the Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest put on by Steve Kleinhaus and his FULL THROTTLE ARMY. This is a beautiful part of the country and a first for the Roadhouse. During this event Steve holds a passport run ensuring attendees can visit numerous local establishments that really creates community involvement.

    All these events were well organized and it was obvious they are labors of love. It is important that when there is an event in your area that you support it by whatever means available.

    On August 28th, 2010 the Chapter 48 Amvets Riders of Post 48 in DeSoto Missouri held their 3rd annual Camp Hope Poker Run. It was a beautiful Saturday morning. A pancake and sausage breakfast was provided by the Junior Amvets also of Post 48. The monies, including their tips were donated to Camp Hope. During the sign up the mood was upbeat and exciting. There were 226 participants including more than 180 motorcycles. Various other motorcycle clubs and organizations helped make this a huge success. The first leg was a group ride in which ninety percent of the group left Post 48 as one. Traffic control for the trip was provided by the DeSoto police department, Bonne Terre police department, and the Chapter 48 Amvets Riders Road Captains. The first stop was the VFW in Bonne Terre. From there, the ride proceeded to the Amvets Post 42 in Herculaneum, and continued on to the VFW in Cedar hill, finalizing back at Amvets Post 48. All proceeds from this event were donated to Camp Hope for the construction of the National Amvets Riders cabin at Camp Hope. President and founder Mike White was presented with a check totaling $23,000 from the National Amvets Riders.

    On August 29th, 2010 a dedication ceremony was held for the two newly built, handicapped accessible cabins at Camp Hope in Farmington Mo. The Gold Star mother of Lcpl. Brandon Webb was in attendance and placed a plaque in honor of her son on the first cabin. The National War Mothers President Nelda Bleckler, placed a plaque honoring Ssgt. Ben Williams onto the second cabin. These two brave United States Marines were killed along with Pfc. Christopher Neal White in the Anbar Provence, Iraq. Chris is the son of Mike and Galia White, founders of Camp Hope. The dedication was attended by the Eastern Missouri Laborers District Council and the Laborers Local 110. These organizations funded and erected the cabins. Many friends and volunteers of Camp Hope were also in attendance.

  • This month in Finks Forum I decided to take a different approach. My apprentice Andy, (you remember the guy in the tutu) will be a guest contributor, introducing himself, discussing interests and what its like to be an apprentice. Enjoy!

    Raised by a working class family in small town Illinois, tattooing was not exactly a career path my parents had in mind for me. In school I was

    an athlete, hung out with friends normal stuff. Around my sophomore year in high school I was introduced to the world of punk rock and hardcore, different to say the least from what I was used to. Fast, angry music, busted knuckles and tattoos I was hooked. From that point on I tried to learn everything I could about tattooing and the culture that surrounds it. Older friends would let me tag along when they got inked, I even started planning my own tattoos. After frequenting Iron Age with friends, it was time for me to start getting tattooed. Becoming a

    regular at the shop and showing my

    face as often as I could became my mission. A combination of luck and being in the right place at the right time landed me a position working the counter at the shop. After two years of absorbing everything that I could and drawing my ass off, Brad offered me the opportunity of a lifetime.

    As his apprentice, Ive learned so much and continue to learn everyday. As Dad Fink promised, it hasnt been easy, but all of my efforts (and embarrassing I told you tattooing wasnt going to be easy moments) are worth what Ive gained. For the last year and a half, Ive consumed my days with drawing, painting, and observing Brad, doing whatever I can to gain more knowledge.

    When Im not working, drawing, painting, or hanging out at Iron Age, I enjoy spending my time on two wheels. My dad has always had a motorcycle for as long as I can remember and the passion was passed on to me. Currently I have two bikes, an 01 Sportster chop and my new project, a 74 Honda CB550. As far as my preference of style, eventually for the Sporty I envision a 60s/70s chopper style, but Id like to make the Honda more like an English Cafe bike. All in due time.

    The Socialists are a political punk band from a town youve probably never heard of called Port Saint John. Frontman, lead singer, and lead guitarist Johnny Habit describes their music as Melody heavy, four chord, sing-a-long anthems with strong leftist political undertones. We produce a very secular sound that we hope will introduce people of all walks of life to the punk lifestyle Ive grown up in. If youre blaring these political ideas in kids faces, it doesnt matter if you or I like the sound, were punks. But to really spread your ideals to kids whove never thought about world issues, kids whove never cared before, you have to make the sound something catchy they can sing a long to. I grew up listening to bands like GBH, Minor Threat, Krum Bums, Bad Brains, H20, and bands of that nature. But I also enjoy more melodic bands like NOFX, Bad Religion, The Descendents, The Lawrence Arms, The Misfits, and The Flatliners. Ive noticed that many of my non-punk fans tend to rather enjoy listening to the latter group when introduced. So I figured, if I wanted to introduce this message to people who dont believe in the leftist punk mentality, Id have to make the music very melody heavy.

    In addition to opening for well known and respected punk acts like GBH and 4 Past Midnight, The Socialists have been playing shows everywhere, and have developed a respectable following. Last year, they won 2nd place in Sports Edges Battle of the Bands, and this year, after an 8 month hiatus, they reunited to resume touring, playing shows, and recording. They finally recorded the much anticipated EP, Lets Start A Fucking Revolution, which they had been demoing for and promoting since before their hiatus, in Moathouse Studios with producer Roger Lima, singer and bassist of Less Than Jake. The EP will be available online and at the bands merch stand on September 25th, and the band will be doing an east coast tour this winter.

    After advertising in a local musicians magazine, Daniel showed up in 2005 and became a fixed member of DEFECATION AREA. The first self-made album Stiff Middle Fingers was released in 2006. The second LP Alkopop was recorded by Karsten Sulewsky, the guitar player of THE RICHIES, one of the most famous punk rock bands in Duisburg ever. Alkopop was released in 2008 including 14 alcohol flavoured punk & roll-songs.

    In 2010, DEFECATION AREA have already appeared on 2 compilations by Brown Bag Propaganda with the 4-band-split-LP War, Terror and Ice Cream, featuring THE OLYMPIANS (California), SICK (Illinois), THE LIVING REJECTS (Germany) and DEFECATION AREA (Germany) to be released by BBP in late 2010. The bands played reams of shows nationwide sharing the stages with bands like: BORN TO LOSE, BAMBIX, LA GUNS, ELECTRIC EEL SHOCK, V8 WANKERS, SS- KALIERT and many more.     Hoppers Choppers

    & RodsI got my start in, or addiction to the world of customs when I was very young.

    My Dad and I started my first street rod build at the age of 14, a 36 ford pickup which is always in the works with something different. I have always been drawn to motorcycles and the appeal to freedom and self expression they offer. You can hop on a scoot when youre havin a rough day and everything just melts away, thats cool!

    My formal education is not in paint, fabrication or even collision repair. I went to college for computer graphics and design. Although I did work at a body shop while I was in college, this is where I learned the tricks of the trade. I watched the pros and asked as many questions as possible. The way I look at the job, was at least I was getting paid to learn instead of the other way around. By the time I was almost finished with college I realized it would be a huge waste of time to make a career out of it. I couldnt stand sitting at a desk that many hours a day.

    So, from there I started planning on how I would get my own shop up and going. Ten years later here we are! Hoppers Choppers & Rods was started with the idea of serving the Biker and the Street Rodder as well as everyone in between. Been in full swing for 4 years now and we offer a wide range of services, some of which include fabrication, auto collision, fiber glass repair, restoration and custom paint/airbrush. When your shop is located in a smaller town you learn to be very diversified. Ive done paint and fabrication on everything from tour buses and semis to helmets and shifter knobs. No joke, even custom painted bathroom fixtures to match tile!

    Having done a lot of full restos on old cars and trucks, I find motorcycles more of a challenge. You have such a small space to make a statement and do it right. My favorite part of this job is doing something for a customer and see their dreams take shape and having them tell you thats exactly what I wanted.

    It has been an awesome experience and one heck of a ride! Im so blessed to be doing something I love. One thing I have always tried to stress through my shop, is that if it wasnt for God and Country not one of us would have the freedom to do the things we love and enjoy. By Country, I mean, Thank You to our Soldiers and their families for your sacrifice and service!

    Wow, I dont even know where to start so Ill start with whats freshest in my mind. BIKEFEST! We have always been proud to be a part of this magazine but after spending 4 days at Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest 2010 we are totally psyched about where this magazine is going. The entire lake area was rumbling with a sound we all have come to love. The roar of motorcycles at every turn and riders having a blast. Tracy and I spent the bulk of our time at the FT Compound along with most of the FT Army where we met locals as well as people from as far away as Texas. I am always taken back by how people we have never met know who Tracy and I are and come up and talk to us.

    We did manage to break away for a short time and make it down the Bagnell Dam Strip for the street party. What an awesome site that was! Bikes as far as you could see, and people having one hell of a good time. The weather was perfect all weekend long. Saturday nights FREE concerts drew a packed house and the crowds were really into it! The staff of the H. Toad were AWESOME! I have to take my hat off to the Colonel. The guy busted his balls all year to make this happen and boy did it happen! Also, thank you Rita Rose for all your hard work with the local businesses around the lake area. The people of Lake of the Ozarks are really great people for sure and we enjoyed our time visiting with them all. Also, last but not least. Local Law Enforcement! Man, these guys were so great. They kept us all safe, but at the same time allowed us all to have fun. I hope everyone realizes how important it is to respect these guys for the job they do and continue to make it as easy for them as we can during Bikefest in years to come. Thanks guys and we cant wait till Bikefest 2011!

    Now onto other things Believe it or not, Gallaghers Getaway in Freeburg Illinois has closed its doors. Its been a long time favorite place for loads of Illinois bikers and for good reason. The people who owned it, ran it, and worked there are some of the best people you will ever find. It was a stop on many poker runs and the site of many great biker parties. I swear I could drop off 70 magazines there and they were gone in 2 days. Tracy and I would like to thank Sheila and Mike for all the great times and memories. We sure are gonna miss that place.

    Now in case you havent heard yet, some fellow bikers havr opened a new bar. Stevie Rays (ad in this issue) is finally up and running. I was there for the kick off of Tuesday, 50 cent Natural Lite Draft. Yes you read that right. 50 cents! It was a great time from what I remember of it. I think Tracy came and got me around 11:30. That part wasnt so good but hey, the place is a great time and the food is fantastic. Food specials everyday and the best wings Ive had in years. They have a Friday fish fry as well so go check the place out. Our best wishes go out to Stevie Rays!

    Now I dont know about the rest of you but it sure seems like this summer has flown by. You would think things would be slowing down around the FT Camp but actually they are just heating up all over again. Its time to build off of the very successful events we threw during this summer. Events for example like Bikefest 2011, and Grease Gears and Grooves! Be watching for GGG 2011 because you wont believe what the Army has in store for you then. This event is turning heads nationally! On the Illinois side, Hot Summer Bike Nights at The Pasta House just exploded. Who would have ever thought this Bike Night would have turned into what it did. Now its time for all of us to sit down and plan for next year. If you think this Bike Night couldnt get any bigger, youre wrong. The success of Hot Summer Bike Nights turned a lot a heads and more and more sponsors want to be involved. Stay tuned to more on that as spring of 2011 draws near.

    Finally, Tracy and I would like to address a question we have been asked all summer long. Will the FT Army be having another Friday Night Bike Night in Illinois? Well, first off I can tell you all that we really missed our Friday nights with you all this year. Last year was a alot of fun for sure. I cant say one hundred percent for sure on a Friday night for next year BUT, I can tell you that this is being discussed and is a STRONG possibility. Again, as Spring draws near the bombs will start dropping. In close we want to wish everyone a safe and fun Halloween. Hopefully we will see you at some parties!

    Ronnie Hicks spent his life collecting debts that now, can never be repaid.

    Ronnies kindness, tolerance and compassion for not only his fel-low bikers, but all he came in contact with are well known. He never met a person who was a stranger; he never turned anyone away who needed a kind word, a bit of encouragement or a helping hand. In fact he had so many friends, ac-quaintances and professional contacts that he sometimes had trouble remembering their names. A problem he solved by using the phrase easy money or gravy train when approached by someone whos name eluded him. Nobody took of-fense or considered this a slight. To remember everyone who knew Ronnie would have required a photographic memory.

    During the last days of his life, most everyone who came to the hospital had a story to share. Some involved his love of fast cars and hot bikes. Others centered on his days as a sportsman. He spent many hours hunting deer and upland game in Illinois and salmon fishing in Michigan. A few told of his love of any new tool and his propensity to buy the latest and greatest without regard to the cost or if he would ever actually use it.

    Yes, everyone had a story to tell about Ronnie. All were interesting and provided an insight into the man that most of us only knew as a fellow Harley owner. The stories I found the most memorable were the ones that spoke directly to his char-acter. The stories that told of his devotion to his friends and his family.

    At one point in Ronnies life he was down on his luck and needed a place to stay. A friend, who had known Ronnie since the early 70s, bought a house and rented it to Ronnie. Ronnie lived in the house and completely maintained the property for several years. But maintaining the property while he was living in it was not enough. Every time the property would be-come vacant, Ronnie would return to clean, paint and repair to make it ready for a new occupant. Most would say Ronnie had fulfilled his obligation. After all, he did pay rent and took care of all the repairs. But that was just Ronnie, a kindness shown to him was worthy of an extraordinary effort on his part to show appreciation.

    Another told of a phone call he made to inform Ronnie that he had lost his job. Ronnie listened as the man started to tell his story, then he asked him to stop and said this is something we need to talk about over breakfast, meet me at the airport in twenty minutes How many do you know that would take time out of their day to help another in this manner. Ronnie did, because this man was his friend and he wanted to help.

    A third story told of a time when Ronnie took a week off work to sit with a friend whose wife was gravely ill and close to death. When she was transferred to a hospital In the Kankakee area, Ronnie went to Kankakee every weekend for forty-five days to be close to his friend in his time of need.

    As I listened to each person relate their experiences, it became clear that Ronnie was a special person. He touched the lives of everyone he knew in a positive way. His mid-southern accent seemed to put people at ease and allowed him to be an effective and personable leader. The way he would work the room before a meeting by hugging all the women and shaking hands with all the men was legendary. The raw emotion expressed and the tributes paid to him before, during and at the conclusion of the services to celebrate his life will long be remembered by those in attendance.

    Ronnie Hicks was my friend. He helped me through a turbulent time in my life and for that I will be eternally grateful. I count myself among the many that now have a debt we can never repay.

    For the last ten months we have discussed ways to prevent a crash. I thought that it would be good for us to push beyond this border and discuss the possibility of what we could do to help a brother or sister at the scene of a motorcycle crash. If you ride long enough, there is a good chance that you will find yourself in a situation where this information will become very useful. The first hour of trauma is termed the ``Golden Hour by Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The idea is that trauma victims have the best survival chance if surgery is performed within one hour of the crash. There are a few things that we can do to help before the medical professionals arrive.

    Psychological Management - At an crash site, everyones adrenaline will be going full-blast and the most important thing is for at least one person to REMAIN CALM and THINK! The first thing you need to do when arriving on an crash scene is to stop and take two deep breaths to help you remain calm. All the other people at the scene are pumped and want to help. They will do whatever they are told by a calm person who seems to be in control and knows what he or she is doing. If youre excited and out of control, everyone will run around wasting precious time in an unorganized fashion. Here are some guidelines:

    Get to the Victim, Reassure and Establish Communication After a person has gone down, they will be in a confused and scared state.

    They probably will not know what happened when they went down. They may be confused, frantic, etc., and often the only thing on their mind will be their bike. It is important to reassure them and to make sure they dont move or try to get to their bike. You will have to tell them something like Youve been in a motorcycle crash. It is important that you do not try to move. My name is ___. Tell them the ambulance is on its way. Be careful what you say around the victim, even if they are unconscious. Hearing works in the unconscious state. Keep your statements positive. How you say things will be important as what you say. Sound calm and it will reduce the panic of everyone else present.

    Best-Trained Individual (medically-wise) Attends to the VictimThe person with the most training (first aid, CPR, etc.) attends directly to the victim.

    Assuming the victim is lying on the ground, this person should sit behind their head and should stabilize his or her head to avoid unnecessary movement (i.e. hold their head still). Assume the person has a back/neck injury and any unnecessary movement could risk paralysis. Leave the helmet on until the ambulance personnel arrive if at all possible! It is very dangerous to remove someones helmet if they have some type of cervical/back injury. The only time it should be removed is if the airway is blocked and cannot be cleared with the helmet on or if it is necessary to perform CPR. Check the victim for a medic-alert bracelet or necklace. Ask the victim three questions and document their responses; Who are you? Where are you? What day is it? If the person has rings on, the fingers may swell up and it is important to get them off. Consent is paramount if the person is conscious. Make sure there is at least one witness when removing them.

    Call 911After there has been a quick evaluation of the number of injured people and guess

    of seriousness, call 911. Remember that an ambulance can only support one truly injured person. It is important to remember that a lot of the injuries that dont look serious to us could very well be life-threatening and injuries that look fatal could be relatively minor. Dont get fancy with the initial seriousness evaluation. If you cant tell, assume its Urgent!

    What to Say to the Emergency Medical Services Dispatcher - There has been a motorcycle crash, need an ambulance, the # of injured people (and how badly), location of crash. It is helpful if you know some special equipment is going to be necessary to tell the dispatcher; Helicopter - Most rural areas cannot handle severe trauma and they may need to get the victim to a trauma center via helicopter. If they know there may be a need, they can get the helicopter ready to leave for the rural hospital when a doctor establishes the extent of the injuries. If the helicopter comes out and it turns out it wasnt necessary, there is no charge for the service. Should the fire department be called? Will Jaws of Life be needed or utilities cut?

    You (the caller) hangs up last! Before the ambulance arrives, if possible, document information about the victim. They may become unconscious and it will be helpful to have information like: full name, next of kin (plus phone number), age, doctor.

    Safety Factors A crash scene can be a hectic place with a lot going on at once. It is important to

    keep safety in mind; if you are helping someone lying in the middle of the road and a truck comes barreling down on both of you its not going to be a good situation.

    Traffic - If people are available, get someone uproad and downroad to wave down traffic. This is especially important in tight twisties where they may not have time to stop after seeing the crash site.

    Hazardous Material Spills (gas, oil, brake fluid) - People and vehicles will slip on this stuff. Either clean it off the road or indicate to everyone where it is.

    Power Lines - If power lines are down around or near the victim, ambulance crews may not be able to get near the person until they are shut off. It is important to call the local utility company to get these live wires turned off at the same time an ambulance is called. If the ambulance arrives and they are still live, they will have to call the utility company and wait for them to come out, wasting a lot of precious time in the Golden Hour.

    Fire - People who smoke tend to light up under stress. Ask these people to either extinguish their smokes or move away from the flammable materials and/or bikes. It is easy to forget something obvious like this in a stressful situation at an crash scene.

    Safety Circle - Establish a few people around the immediate crash scene to help direct traffic, point out fluid spills and warn people who may want to light up.

    Ambulance ArrivalBefore the ambulance arrives, send people to the intersections in all directions to

    watch for/direct the ambulance. When the ambulance arrives, it is important to stay out of their way as much as possible. Meet them and identify yourself as being ``in charge and to be the person to contact if they need anything (bikes moved, people moved, whatever). Make sure you provide accessible parking for the ambulance. Give factual account of the crash. It is IMPORTANT for medical personnel to have an HONEST estimate of the speed and circumstances at the time of the crash and an honest evaluation of patients drug/alcohol consumption. Stay back or leave if told to give EMTs time to work. It is important to give the ambulance people the most accurate information possible! If the person just had 10 beers in the past hour, tell them! They are not the law enforcement officials and their only immediate concern is the safety of the patient. By underestimating, trying to cover up, or not telling the whole truth, you are only keeping important information away from them which may be necessary for the safety of the patient.

    If the helmet was removed, send it along in the ambulance. The doctors may use the visible damage to the helmet to assist them in what to look for in terms of injuries.

    Hospital Only have one or two people in the Emergency Room at a time. If the doctors have

    questions and neither of the people in the ER know the answer, send one of them out to the other people to find out the answer. Crowding everyone into the ER will only make it more stressful and difficult for the ER staff to do their jobs.

    Law EnforcementAs with the ambulance, when law enforcement arrives identify yourself as being

    ``in charge. Let them know that if there is anything they need, such as bikes moved or people moved, you are the person to talk to. For them, walking on to a scene of bikers who are all in a very excited state is intimidating and this will help calm them and give them some easy way to control the scene. It is obviously important to do whatever the law enforcement officials ask.

    Before the officers do arrive, try to not move motorcycle parts any more than necessary! They may need to take crash scene notes and by moving things around you may confuse the situation for them. Parts will need to be moved off the road to avoid further problems, but move them directly to the side so the law enforcement officials can determine roughly where it stopped if necessary. Try not to disturb the bike any more than necessary. (Petcock should be shut off, electrics turned off, bike propped up vertically, etc.)

    Give Thanks80% of the ambulance personnel are volunteers. Officers often get little or no

    recognition for helping out on the scene. It will cheer all of them up to no end to receive some kind of thanks for their help. Send a card or visit in person. It improves our image as bikers and rewards all of those people who take time out of their own lives to help others. It is important!

    Be PreparedTake basic first aid and CPR courses. They are offered through the American Red

    Cross and several other organizations periodically. Go with some riding buddies or get your club to have a class.

    Remember not to crack it if you are on corn snakes!

    Around the 28th of August the small town of Summersville, MO comes to life with the roaring & rumbling of motorcycles. This is the home of Dogs Off A Leash poker run, the creation of 1 individual Mark Rusty Housewait, now that I think about it, maybe the credit should go to Red the redbone hound. After all without him the idea may not have crossed Marks mind. You see Mark was keeping Red for his daughter temporarily, when mysteriously he kept getting off his leash.

    OK guys, when you have a neighbor who doesnt really like bikers, what better incentive would someone have than to call up your biker friends, have a barbeque in the back yard, hire a band, take a ride, add a bike show & give all the profits to your community. Mark never dreamed just how big this event would grow in just 4 years & what better name to give it than.Dogs Off A Leash, after all that is how this all began.

    This is the 2nd year Ive joined some of my friends & gone to this event. The run now takes place at the Haunted Hut, which Mark owns & serves up some real fine food. Approx. 200 bikes in the run, a bike raffle, a band, great food & a bike show, what more could you ask for? Well, maybe another Ace to go with the pair of Aces & nines I had. Oh well, I had a great time and I understand there was $1500.00 cash prizes awarded plus the area Senior Center was given over $2000.00 and the local Toy Drive was awarded $1000.00. Each year the community is awarded a large sum of money from this event.

    Mark I must say you are doing a great job but, let us not forget Red he deserves some sort of reward, maybe a big hambone! Who would have thought that a dog running loose would have inspired such a great event & helped the community in such a large way? Mark has honored Red in one way, by putting a picture of a redbone hound on all the t-shirts sold. Mark tells me he already has a new route planned for next year. Hope to see some of you there.
