HOW TO GROW MORE VOUCHERS

HERE WE GROW AGAIN… WHERE TO START?Following a highly successful first year, Morrisons Let’s Grow scheme is back – launching in September.

Since the launch of Let’s Grow, children in over 15,500 schools have been getting their hands dirty – not to mention growing some delicious fruit and veg in school!

Let’s Grow aims to help schools capture the imagination of the nation’s children to show them where their food comes from and how much fun they can have growing it.

Since the scheme launched last year, we’ve opened up the Let’s Grow scheme to nursery schools and added new gardening equipment to the catalogue.

Schools can redeem their Let’s Grow vouchers for fantastic free gardening equipment; everything from seeds and spades, to composting bins and wormeries.

We were delighted to hand out over 475,000 pieces of free gardening equipment last year, but we want to give out even more to you this year.

By following the hints and tips in this booklet you can let your local community know that you are participating in Let’s Grow, which will help you get a bumper crop of vouchers this year.

This kit will give you fresh ideas and advice on how to spread the word about your school’s Let’s Grow campaign to parents, teachers and the local media.

Don’t forget to register your school to take part! Registration is open from now until 15th November.

Vouchers can be collected in all Morrisons stores from 7th September until 1st November.

The order deadline for equipment is 27th November.

You can get all the information you need about Let’s Grow by visiting www.morrisons.co.uk/letsgrow

LET’S GROW 2009/10 – KEY DATES TO REMEMBER

Set a goal for the amount of vouchers to collect or the gardening equipment you need – this will give your community the motivation to get involved and support you.

Once you have your target, let your pupils, parents, teachers and governors know about it.

Get the children involved from the beginning! Encourage them to help you reach the voucher collection total so they can have fun growing their own fruit and veg!

You can download a ‘Grow-O-Meter’ from our website to show the children how many vouchers they have collected so far, or give regular voucher collection updates in assemblies.

Clearly display your voucher collection bins and posters for all visitors to see.

How do you communicate to the school? Posters/Displays: Include your targets/goals for this year. Did you take part last year? If so, it’s a good idea to compile examples of the results you achieved; photos, work produced, produce grown.

You can then use this information to appeal to: Your teachers – this will help them form their lesson plans and make implementing Let’s Grow easier.

Parents – do you have a school website or newsletter that you can publish information in? You could also send letters home to parents to ask for their support in collecting the vouchers you need to reach your goal (see page 5).

Inform your Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

How to speak to the whole community!Your local newspaper is the perfect way to ask a wide audience for support to help you collect vouchers. You could also try your local radio station or community websites.

1. Who to contactMake a list of local media you want to contact. You should be able to find telephone numbers online or in the newspaper itself. If you can’t, just call the switchboard number and ask for ‘News Desk’ or ‘Editorial’.

2. What to sayIt’s always best to call and speak to a journalist first. Give them a brief outline of the school’s Let’s Grow activity and ask if they have an email address that you can send information through to. Journalists receive so many news stories in a day that they are more likely to spot your email if they are expecting it.

Don’t worry if a journalist isn’t interested this time, they could simply be focusing on another story. It’s a good idea to ask the journalist when is the best time to call them and what the newspaper deadline is – if it is a Tuesday at 12 noon, don’t phone the journalist at 11.55!

3. What to send An email or press release which should be short and snappy.

Try to make sure the first paragraph contains all the main points in a summary (including who, what, why, where, when, how).

Include a quote from the school, perhaps from a teacher, which can contain more emotion and make the piece more human.

Remember to include your contact details, as the journalist may want to give you a ring for more information.

At the end of the kit you will find template press releases which can simply be completed and sent off to your local media at the appropriate times.

4. What to do with media coverageDisplay and communicate it. The more people who see the coverage, the more people will know to give you their vouchers.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIESHOW DO I CONTACT THE LOCAL MEDIA?Whilst press photographers are experts at setting up a good photo, it is always helpful to suggest a photo opportunity to the journalist when you speak to them. This will encourage them to send a photographer along and may well be the photo they go with. Here are a few ideas:

It’s also a good idea to take your own photos to send across to the paper by email. They can’t always spare a photographer, but may still print a good photo if it is sent to them.

SAMPLE LETTER TO PARENTS SAMPLE LETTER TO TEACHERS

Dear Parent/Guardian,

[School Name] is hoping to get as much free gardening equipment as possible with

Morrisons Let’s Grow scheme, so pupils can grow fruit and vegetables at school.

<Insert your school’s goal/what you want to achieve this year here. You could also

include details about the great results you achieved last year to get people engaged

in supporting you>

Let’s Grow is an exciting nationwide voucher reward scheme that aims to teach children

about the origins of food in a fun and practical way. Over 15,500 schools took part in

Let’s Grow last year, receiving more than 475,000 pieces of gardening equipment,

and we are delighted to be taking part this year.

In order to get lots of equipment, we need to collect as many Let’s Grow vouchers

as possible.

From 7th September to 1st November, you and your family and friends can collect

Let’s Grow vouchers from your local Morrisons store. You will receive one voucher for

every £10 you spend in store, and we would be very grateful if you could donate any

vouchers you collect to our cause.

Collection boxes will be displayed in the school.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Dear Teachers,

[School Name] is hoping to get as much free gardening equipment as possible with Morrisons Let’s Grow scheme, so pupils can grow fruit and vegetables at school.

[DATE][SCHOOL NAME] GETS SHED LOADS OF GARDENING EQUIPMENT

[School Name] took delivery of free gardening equipment this week so they can grow

their own greens, as part of Morrisons Let’s Grow scheme.

The school collected the Morrisons vouchers throughout the autumn period and, after

totalling up the bumper crop of vouchers, put in their order. The equipment has arrived

in time for the start of the growing season, so pupils and teachers will be straight to work

preparing the ground for the first seeds.

<Insert here what you will be planting, hoping to achieve etc>

[Name], Headteacher at [School Name], said: “We’re over the moon to get so much

gardening equipment and the children can’t wait to get stuck in and put it to good use.

This type of hands-on learning is really important for children’s development and it’s

good fun too!”

Last year alone the Morrisons Let’s Grow campaign saw UK kids grow nearly three

quarters of a million radishes, 200,000 pumpkins and almost two million tomatoes! From

Penzance to Peterhead and Bangor to Bridlington, Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ is helping kids

develop a passion for growing their own fresh produce.

In its first year over 39 million vouchers were redeemed by UK schools in exchange

for gardening equipment. They were exchanged for:

• 4,750 greenhouses• 3,703 pairs of wellies• 16,463 pairs of gardening gloves• 19,426 trowels • 12,492 watering cans…and much more

[DATE]LOCAL SCHOOL HARVESTS A BOUNTIFUL CROP

Teachers and pupils at [School Name] have begun to harvest the fresh vegetables they have been growing as part of Morrisons Let’s Grow scheme.

The school collected [Number] Let’s Grow vouchers in autumn, which were exchanged for a range of gardening equipment and seeds earlier this year.

Those seeds have now grown into ripe vegetables, ready to be picked for the dinner plate.

<Insert here details of what you have grown, quantities, etc>

[Name], Headteacher at [School Name], said: “We’re delighted with the amount of wonderful fresh vegetables we have grown. The children have really learned a huge amount, not only about gardening, but about the fresh food itself and I think they are really looking forward to a tasting session.”
