Thank you for coming to this culminating orchestral concert of the 2016-2017 school year. We bid our graduating seniors a fond farewell and hope that music continues to be an important part of their lives. We extend special thanks and congratulations to Kim Roy for her leadership and hard work during her first year as Orchestra Director. Finally, we'd like to thank all of you - the parents, family and friends who encourage their students to practice and drive them to night rehearsals; produce and buy baked goods; sell T-shirts, Chinook Books and tickets; and volunteer in so many ways to make the Garfield Orchestra Program a resounding success.

MEET THE SOLOISTSTiffany ShenTiffany Shen started studying piano with Dr. Hanyo Lee when she was five, leading to her strong foundation in classical music. She has participated in many competitions and adjudications and has won numerous awards in the Seattle International Piano Festival’s Bach Festival, the Classical Festival, the Romantic Festival, and the Contemporary Festival. Tiffany has also been recognized for her excellence in Simon Fiset, the Russian Festival, Sonata-Sonatina Festival, Solo and Ensemble and the University of Puget Sound’s Annual Piano Festival. She won first prize at the WSMTA Outstanding Artists Competition. Currently Tiffany studies with Dr. Peter Mack. She does not intend to pursue music as a career and will attend UW in the fall.

Conrad SmithConrad has been playing trumpet since the 5th grade when he started at Orca K-8, and enjoys playing many types of music, including Orchestral and Jazz. He enjoys playing in this orchestra so much because of the amazing repertoire the orchestra is capable of performing. He would like to thank his parents, who have supported whatever he has wanted to do, especially when it comes to music. He would also like to thank all of the private teachers that he has had over the years. Mr. Tsutakawa and Ms. Roy have done a wonderful job with this orchestra, and he is very grateful for the work they have put in to make this orchestra what it is. Conrad will be attending Oberlin Conservatory next year to continue his study of classical trumpet.

Sean LeeSean Lee is a violin student of Ron Patterson and a viola student of Roxannna Patterson. He plays first violin in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. He is a student of the Seattle Conservatory of Music where he plays violin and viola in a chamber group and performs in outreach concerts. With Ron, Sean matured as a violinist and began considering violin more seriously with the goal of playing in a conservatory. Sean played hockey for nine years. His Bantam team won the State Championships and went to the Tier II Nationals in 2013. It was therefore a difficult decision to pursue his love of music and “retire” from hockey at age 14. He also enjoys skiing and running and is passionate about his Seahawks. Sean will be starting at Boston University next year in the dual degree program studying computer science and violin performance with Peter Zazofsky.

Alex MillerAlex Miller has studied cello for 14.0383 years with Peter Williams. Outside of Garfield Orchestra, he plays in Northwest Mahler Festival Orchestra, Seattle Cello eXperiment, and the Fabulous Fuzzy Squad. Alex has successfully performed a Junior Recital and is excited for his Senior Recital on Saturday. In his free time, Alex skis and builds electromechanical contraptions to take over his parent's house. Alex would like to thank his cello teacher for his inspiration and life lessons. He would also like to thank Mr. Tsutakawa for his leadership and Ms. Roy for her zeal. Finally, he would like to thank his mother and father for their support, as well as his grandparents, Mim and Peter Selig, for their fervent humming of symphonies over the phone. Alex plans to study engineering at MIT, while continuing his music studies in the Boston area.
