medical literature and altogether

shed ten stone through gastric bypass surgery, I now had to face the long

wait until Id ascended the NHS waiting list. The length of time I would

have to wait would be two years. I needed an alternative solution!

Finally, my seemingly endless search bore fruit. Id found my dreamhospital and surgeon, the fact that it was in Polanddidnt concern me so

long as the treatment I received was top-class. In April 2010 I flew from

the UK, and had my tummy tuck. Any previous reservations I had were

unfounded not only was the customer care exemplary, but the treatment

exceeded all my expectations! I returned just a month later for a breast

reduction and uplift.

When I returned home the second time, I couldnt help but feel the

hospital and surgeon deserved more recognition. Back home people were

paying exorbitant rates for treatments they could receive in Europe for a

fraction of the price. But the stigma around medical tourism practices

remained. Back street butchers and cheap boob jobs were the images

associated with surgery abroad. Without reaching for the nearest

megaphone and calling doubters forth to scrutinise my treatments, I had to

do something. Secret Surgery Ltd was about to be born.! Since the beginning

of my venture, I have created strong links with surgeons the length and

breadth of Europe. I have set up support groups here in the UK to allow

Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication (Gastric Wrap)

What Is It And Who Is It For?

During this procedure the volume of the stomach is reduced as the greater curvature isinvaginated using multiple rows of non-absorbable sutures or special staples. The effect isensured due to the volume reduction but also to the lowered capacity of the stomach todistend and potentially the fact that the procedure restricts the area where gastrointestinalhormones responsible for the sensation of hunger are produced.

One of its main advantages is that there is no implant left in the body. Also, when comparedto a very similar and widely performed operation, sleeve gastrectomy, it is more convenientbecause it does not remove a large part of a completely healthy organ the stomach, thewhole of which is preserved. Consequently, this is another potential advantage of thisprocedure its reversibility.

Greater curvature plication is designed for patients with a BMI (body mass index) over 40 orfor those with a BMI between 35 and 40 who also suffer from additional problems such ashypertension or diabetes. Other obese patients who have repeatedly failed to lose weight

with the help of conservative treatment can also opt for it.

How Is It performed? The operation is done laparoscopically. First, a special laparoscopiccamera is introduced into the abdomen through small incision near the belly button throughabdominal wall and then the surgeon performs the surgery through several additional shortincisions in the abdominal wall using special long and thin instruments.

During Surgery The operation is performed under general anaesthetic and takesapproximately two hours.

After Surgery The procedure requires a minimum two-day stay at the clinic. Immediatelyafter the operation, the abdomen may be swollen and sensitive; the patient may suffer fromnausea or vomiting. Medication can ease the discomfort.

A vitally important partner to the operation is that the client changes their diet and overalllifestyle. Results are visible soon after the operation; most patients after greater curvatureplication surgery lose weight significantly in the first year and continue doing so for aminimum period of two and a half years.

Within the two first years, considerable improvements can also be expected in type2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol level, apnoea and other obesity relatedsymptoms.It is very important to realise that the ideal results can only be attained if the client follows the

indications concerning lifestyle, diet and exercise.

Prof. Dr. Martin Fried

Professor Fried is an internationally acclaimedexpert in bariatric and laparoscopic surgery. He

comes from Prague where he graduated from

the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University,

in 1982. He received an attestation in surgery.

Professor Fried began to specialise in bariatic

surgery in the early 1990s, when he became a

member of a medical team specialising in

this area.

Professor Fried holds two important firsts in his

field. In 1993, he was the first surgeon in the

world to fit a non-adjustable gastric band

laparoscopically on an obese patient .

In 2000 he was the first surgeon in the Czech

Republic to perform a robot-assisted gastric

band operation.

From 1994 to 2001, Dr. Fried was the head physician at the General Faculty Hospital and at

the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University (Prague). In 2005 he was promoted to

Professor of Surgery at Charles University.

He has been the head of OB klinika since 2009. Professor Fried also operates and lectures

abroad, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Professor Fried continues to be a member of many professional associations. He was the

vice-president of IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and MetabolicDisorders) and he has been the executive director of its European chapter for three years.

He is a member of the International Society of Surgery, The New York Academy of Sciences

and many others.

Food and Drinks

There is a variety of restaurant facilities offering typicalCzech food and also other specialities. Generallyspeaking, Czech cuisine consists of hearty meat dishes

(mainly beer and pork served with dumplings andcabbage). However, eating habits in the CzechRepublic are changing. International cuisine (Italian,Chinese and Indian in particular) is more and morepopular, as are vegetarian and fish-based cuisine. Beeris the most typical Czech product. There is a breweryin every major town and city and its high quality isalways guaranteed. Moravian wine is less widelyknown but it is also excellent we can recommend awine tasting visit to south Moravia, with its wealth ofvineyards and wine cellars.

Language

The official language is Czech, a Slavonic language

related to Russian and Polish. However, German, and

especially English, are widely spoken in Prague. As far

as services are concerned (hotels, transport and most

restaurants) these two languages are a must and

usually other languages are also spoken particularly

Russian, Spanish and French.

The majority of the younger generation have good

language skills as it is obligatory to learn at least one

foreign language (habitually English or German) at

school and, what is more, learning languages is

popular in the Czech Republic.

Useful Information

The climate in the Czech Republic is mild and continental with four clearly defined seasons.Winter temperatures typically fall close to zero; summer is warm with temperatures aroundtwenty degrees.

The currency is called Czech crown (CZK or Kc), the exchange rate is approximatelybetween 20 to 25 crowns to one Euro and 30 crowns to one pound (GBP). We stronglyadvise you to exchange your money only in official exchange offices, never in the street.International bank cards are accepted at all the many cash points/ATMs around the city.
