New Band Songs

This material was presented at Open Mic on July 14. “Recordings” refer to those versions currently available on the internet (YouTube) which I found interesting.
Where did the new songs in Program 2015 A come from? The short answer is Frank Davis, but the details can be interesting. So, in program order:
• Dream (full title Dream When You’re Feeling Blue) was written by Johnny Mercer in 1944, as the theme song for his radio program. In 1945 it was recorded by a young Frank Sinatra when his voice was at its best.
• Dancing In The Dark, a 1931 composition by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz for a show called The Band Wagon, was recorded by Bing Crosby that year. It was also a 1941 hit for Artie Shaw. You and the Night and the Music, by Schwartz and Dietz in 1934, was recorded in 1960 by Julie London. Another good version was made by Chet Baker in 1986.
• Bye Bye Blues (not Bye Bye Baby) dates from 1930 and was written by Fred Hamm, Dave Bennett, Bert Lown and Chaucey Gray. In 1952 it was a hit record for Les Paul and Mary Ford. (If You Knew) Susie was written in 1925 by Buddy De Silva and Joseph Meyer, recorded by Eddie Cantor in1925. It was also sung in the 1945 movie Anchors Aweigh by Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly. (Waiting for the Robert) E. Lee was a 1912 composition by Lewis Muir and L. Wolfe Gilbert, performed in movies by Al Jolson (1927) and Judy Garland (1941). Dean Martin also recorded this song.
• Just One More Chance was written in 1931 by Sam Coslow and Arthur Johnson. Bing Crosby recorded it
in 1931and also performed it in a short comedy movie. Dean Martin also recorded it. Are the lyrics serious, or so exaggerated as to be funny?
• Tender Is The Night was composed in 1962 by Sammie Fain and Paul Webster for a movie with the same title, based on a novel with the same title by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Tony Bennett recorded it. In 1983 Jackson Brown released a different song with the same title.
• Don’t Blame Me, a 1932 composition by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields for a show called Clowns in Clover, was recorded by Nat King Cole in 1948.
Note the dominance of years 1931 to 1934, corresponding to the early years of many of our gig audience members.
