I take the pleasure to submit before you the 12 th issue of biannual Newsletter of Bal Sahyog for the period October, 2015 to March, 2016. It covers our activities with children in Bal Sahyog Children’s Home and nine contact centers in different slums of Delhi including organization of festive occasions, children’s fair and exposure etc. It also covers brief status of vocational training for youth and women as well as activities with civil society members, NGOs and government stake holders etc. Bal Sahyog is a Children’s World. We work for creating space and environment where we can rear a happy, healthy and creative child with dignity. We take care to save their childhood and protect them from any form of exploitation. The efforts of Bal Sahyog is to bring about holistic development of the children by adopting child centric process, participation and creativity. We also work for imparting skill based training to youth and women in different trades like computer literacy, tailoring, beauty culture, housekeeping, early childhood education etc. in collaboration with NIOS and help children get employment. Dear Friends, Greeting from Bal Sahyog! I take the pleasure to submit before you the 12th issue of biannual Newsletter of Bal Sahyog for the period October, 2015 to March, 2016. It covers our activities with children in Bal Sahyog Children’s Home and nine contact centers in different slums of Delhi including organization of festive occasions, children’s fair and exposure etc. It also covers brief status of vocational training for youth and women as well as activities with civil society members, NGOs and government stake holders etc. Bal Sahyog is a Children’s World. We work for creating space and environment where we can rear a happy, healthy and creative child with dignity. We take care to save their childhood and protect them from any form of exploitation. Bal Sahyog manages one Children’s Home for 100

children and an Open Shelter for 25 children in need of

care and protection. It provides complete residential as

well as educational facilities to 100 children in Home and 25 children in the Open Shelter with

adequate space, proper nutrition, health care, recreation and opportunity of creativity and

participation etc. It has been managing 9 contact centers in nine different slums of Delhi where

vocational training to youths, early childhood education to disadvantaged and poor children and

remedial classesto school dropouts and newly enrolled children is provided with the support

from corporate agencies like Tech Mahindra Foundation, ESSEL Foundation, BHEL and ONGC

etc.

25th October, 2015.Children enjoyed the

camp and it inculcated among them a sense

of patriotism, discipline, confidence and

On the occasion of Children’s Day, five children were

taken to India Gate for participation in drawing

competition organized by Butterfly. Again, 40 children

were taken to Rajiv Gandhi Foundation where children

participated in poem recitation, drama and sports

activities. More than this, Muskan foundation organized

quiz and drawing competition for all the children in bal

sahyog. The children from Bal Sahyog secured prizes

and were awarded travelling bags and winner cups etc. as

prizes.

On 3rd

November 2015, Bal Sahyog organized Diwali Mela. The objective of the mela was to

exhibit immense talent the underprivileged and street children have, give opportunity to the

children for taking leadership action and create space for fun. Different items such as diya,

cushion cover, lamps, bangles, necklaces, salwar suit, paintings, apron, and petticoat had been

displayed. It is worth mentioning that all the items were handmade which were prepared by the

students of vocational training programme. The other main attraction of the Mela was display of

organic compost made by the gardener of Bal Sahyog.

On 9th

November Creative Values organized Magic Shows at Bal Sahyog. They also conducted

various creative activities for the entertainment and knowledge of children. These kind of magic

shows help the children to view the world with open minds and overwhelming imagination.

Volunteers from Koshish, IIFT, organized various competitions such as singing, dancing and

essay competition etc. After the competition they distributed stationery among children as prizes.

Corporates like Deloitte, India and US Chapter organized their impact day by doing activities

like cloth painting competition, singing& dancing completionon 27th

On 19th

November, Bal Sahyog celebrated 97th

Birthday of its founder Mrs. Indira Gandhi as

Sports Day. Staff, Teachers and Students of the Bal

Sahyog Middle School paid floral tribute to her.

Sports activities were also organised by Bal Sahyog

on the occasion. The highlights of the event were

spoon race, three leg race, relay etc. Again at one of

itscontact centre at Karol Bagh the same event was

celebrated by volunteers from Whitish Academy,

Global Peace Foundation.

A Dental camp was organized on 13th December, 2015 for

the children of Bal Sahyog. The camp was organized by Dr.

P. Mehra, Dr. S.S. Karthikey, Dr. Amit and Mr. Vinay. Doctors checked children’s dental health

and teeth. One more health camp was organized by a group of doctors from Lady Harding

Hospital on 20th December 2015. Health promotion and prevention are given special importance

through these kinds of Health Camps.

Celebration of occasion is a regular event of Bal Sahyog. On the eve of Christmas, all the centers

of Bal Sahyog celebrated the event. Children and staff enjoyed the party with cake cutting,

distribution of sweets and collective celebrations.

Lohri marks the beginning of end of winter and coming of the spring and New Year. On 13th

January 2016, Lohri was celebrated at Bal Sahyog with full fervor around the bonfire. Gud

(sweet), Rewri, popcorns and pea nuts were distributed among children and staff. The festival

was celebrated at all the contact centres of Bal Sahyog as well.

On 14th January 2016, Mr. Kapil Sharma from My Home India celebrated Makar Sankranti with

the children and staff of Bal Sahyog. He distributed Rewri, Gudpatti among staff and children.

Bal Sahyog organizes painting competition very

often to motivate the children for creativity and participation. With this purpose on 22nd

January

2016, a Painting Competition was held at the premise of Bal Sahyog where 25 children from Bal

Sahyog Home and 35 children from contact centres of Naharpur, Inderpuri, Wazirpur, Kotla,

Rithala and Dallupura took part. Five children from Bal Sahyog Home and five children from

contact centres had been selected for prizes. Rahul, Ravi, Shekhar, Mukesh and Vijay won 1st,

Every year Republic Day is

celebrated in Bal Sahyog with full

pomp and ceremony. This year too,

on 25th January 2016, Republic day

has been celebrated at the premise of

Bal Sahyog to commemorate the true

spirit of the Independent India. The

flag was hoisted by Mohammad

Salam Khan, Executive Director, Bal

It becomes very difficult to get away with the Delhi winter. A lot of fortunate people use hot

water, cold creams, hot coffee etc. All these luxuries are very far away from the reach of

common man on road. We may not give them all these facilities, but we can definitely help them

giving one blanket. With this motto, Bal Sahyog distributed blankets to needy people at the

community contact centers.

Make a Difference organized a dream camp for the children of Bal Sahyog. They were taken to

Golden Hut Resort, Rewari on 5th February 2016. Various recreational and fun activities were

conducted among the children. The whole camp was full of fun and adventure for children.

12 students from Karol Bagh contact centers of

Bal Sahyog were selected for training at MSME

(Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium

Enterprises) under PMKVY scheme with an aim

to encourage and mobilize a large number of

Indian youths to take up skill training, become

employable and earn a dignified livelihood.

After completion of the training, students were

given certificate on 18th March 2016.

To make Clean India Mission (Swach Bharat Abhiyan) Scheme successful, Bal Sahyog has been

organizing regular campaign for cleanliness in its Home, Middle School and all the Contact

centers in different parts of the slums of Delhi. The photograph below presents the scene during

Cleaning Drive at Inderpuri centre and the nearby community areas.

A medical camp was held at Bal Sahyog

premise on 20th

March by “CareNeedy Foundation”. A team of Doctors checked eye, teeth,

blood group, and hemoglobin of the children to find out any kind of minor or major illness. 114

children participated and got the benefit of the camp.

The joyous festival of Holi was held at the premise of Bal Sahyog on 22nd

March 2016.The

Hon’ble guests of this event were Mr. Panigrahi (Director of MSME) & Mr. Karun Kumar

(Assistant Director of MSME). The main attractions of the event were stalls of clothes,

embroidery works, jewelry, Mehdi, organic compost, food corner and cultural programs. Several

NGOs were invited to take part in this Holi Mela.

Normally on third of every month Bal Sahyog celebrates birthday of the children of Shelter

Home and Open Shelter. The children are presented with gifts like new colorful shirts, T shirts

and Pants, toys to younger ones and sweet cakes to all children by Bal Sahyog during the

celebration. Many donors celebrate their birthday in Bal Sahyog with children. The birthday of

our former Patron Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was celebrated in the presence of Mr. Anurag

Thakur, MP, Rajya Sabha and BCCI Secretary and other dignitaries of the Govt. The children

were offered special dinner, beautiful gifts and sweets etc. on the occasion.

The birthday of former CM of Delhi Shri Madan Lal Khurana was celebrated by his wife in the

presence of his well wishers, Mr. Satish Upadhyay and family members. Hon’ble Union

Minister, Shri. Mukhtar Abbas Naquvi, also came to the campus with his well wishers and

friends and celebrated his birthday with the children of Bal Sahyog.

Exposure visit is a tool that is used to facilitate learning and build scientific temper. Bal Sahyog

organizes exposure visits so that children know about what is happening around the world.

To make the best of lunch time, we try to give special lunch for children. Almost 35 individual

donors have provided special lunch to children and did some special activities like painting,

dancing, puzzle and singing with the children and cheered with them. We always try to make

healthiest food for children to improve their mental & physical growth. The photographs given

below present cheerful moments that they have enjoyed having food during the special lunches.

Bal Sahyog has covered more than six thousand youth and women under its vocational training

programme over the last six years and has ensured placements in jobs or self-employment to

more than 50 percent of the said trainees. During the last six month it has provided livelihood

training to 608 youth and women and provided gainful engagement to 336 (more than 50%) out

of them. At present 162 youths are also enrolled in different trades of vocational training through

NIOS. These are the absolute figures only but the important thing is that it has made its impact

on the income, living standards, attitude and practice of many family members. The table below

shows the coverage of youth and women in 9 different slums of Delhi under vocational training

program during Oct 15 to March 16:

Again, Bal Sahyog has covered more than four thousand children in the age group of 3 to 12

years in contact centers during the last six years. Mainstreaming and retention of children is

given priority and the percentage of retention of children in formal school has risen to above 95

percent over the years. The table below show coverage of children through early childhood

education, NFE & remedial education during Oct 15 to March 16 in its contact centres:

Rest children are still continuing and getting education till they are being mainstreamed.

Further, on an average, 125 to 225 children are covered in the Open shelter including the 3

contact centers and 150 to 160 children are covered in shelter Home annually. Almost all

children ( who have stayed in the Home for at least 15 days) are enrolled in Government formal

school for good education, provided academic support through private tuition, given adequate

nutritional and medical support, space for creativity, participation, physical and mental growth

etc. The table below shows the coverage of children in Open shelter and Shelter Home during

October, 2015 to March, 2016.

1. Children in Bal Sahyog Children’s Home have received a safe, creative and learning

environment that has helped them to attain optimum physical, mental, ethical and spiritual

development.

2. Academic performance of these children have improved and all of them attaining 18 years of

age are provided opportunities to become academically sound and technically skilled to get a

job and sustain themselves. Out of 100 underprivileged children supported through private

tuition, in different slums of Delhi, more than 50% students have secured above 60% marks

in the Board/CBSE examination in class x and xii. One child scored 94% marks and 3 got

over 90 marks in CBSE last year.

3. 336 youth and women have been provided gainful engagement during the last 6 months and

more than 6 thousand over the last 6 years. Most of these trainees are female (about 90%).

4. Continuous community mobilization for their awareness on health, education, women and

child rights as well as gender issues has been organized covering more than ten thousand

youth; women and men the activities have impacted on the families and the society as

follows.

These young adult girls, after their gainful engagement, have become an asset rather than

being considered as a liability in the family and society.

The phenomenon has changed the perspective of the parents and the opinion makers in

the society on the issue of need for gender equality.

The progress and their ability to economically contribute to the family has made them

part of the active decision making process rather than passive listeners and participants.

Contributed for gender equality and encouraged other young girls and women to come

forward, get educated and skilled and contribute for generating revenue and financial

status within the family.

The process has changed the perspective of male and female members of the society

towards gender equality

It has contributed improvement in status of life of thousands of orphan and

underprivileged children.

Sponsor a child for one year (including food, shelter, clothing, health,

education and overall development by donating Rs.72, 000 per year

(Payment can also be made@ Rs.6, 000pm).

for over 120 Children by donating Rs.7, 000 and Rs.3, 000

respectively.

Sponsor an outing for a day for over 100 children by donating Rs.20,

000 or arranging transport for the same.

as Birthday, Anniversary, Festival and other events with children.

Children’s Home.

Donate for specific purposes for children such as Fans,

Blankets, Coolers, Heaters, Warmers, Furniture, and Vehicles etc.
