AQA GCE GEOGRAPHY AS/A2 LEVEL Subject Leaflet

 In year 12 all students will take 2 units which make up the AS level. You then take a further 2 units in year 13 which, allows you to get a full A level. The specification will give you a good understanding of the modern world and is relevant to anyone who wants to understand physical and human environments. Overall the AS specification extends, develops and diversifies candidates’ likely experience of GCSE Geography, whilst offering opportunities for reengagement with the subject at AS by candidates who perhaps reluctantly forewent the study of geography at GCSE. As a geography student you will be involved in discussions and small group work to help you reach conclusions as well as writing essays, producing case studies and reading around the subject. There is a lot of skills work, drawing maps, graphs, diagrams, using statistics and field work. The Course ContentYear 12 AS Unit 1(35% of A-level):  Rivers and flood management

 Unit 4a (20% of A-level): Geographical Fieldwork AssessmentAS - Y12 Unit 1 and 2 are examined in the summer. Both exams can be 

retaken in the January of A2.A2 - Y13     Unit 4a is examined in January (this exam can be retaken in the 

summer of A2) and Unit 3 is examined in the summer. Independent study expectations:

Each student is expected to carry out around 4 hours of  independent study using resources available on the student shared ICT area, the LRC and work set by the class teacher. Revision should be included in this time and carried out each week regardless of homework activities set.

Case StudiesThe research and study of relevant contemporary examples and case studies is an essential part of Geography students will learn a wide range from the UK’s River Tees to Thailand’s ‘cabbages and condoms’ population policy to the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami.

Skills used and examined in GeographyCandidates will need to develop a variety of basic, investigative, cartographic, graphical, applied ICT and statistical skills. They will need to develop a critical awareness of the appropriateness and limitations of different skills and resources. The level of accuracy, sophistication and detail are all expected to be greater at AS than at GCSE, and similarly between AS and A2.

Most students use ‘A’ level Geography as one of three or four ‘A’ levels required for University entry. Others use the broad qualification in order to seek employment. Many students choose Geography or related degrees e.g. planning, and development.  

This modern syllabus gives you an environmental and global awareness, which is increasingly relevant too many different industries. As a result of this Geography graduates were the most likely to gain employment or enter further study after graduation in 2011. Many Geography graduates follow careers in Law, Accountancy, Administration, Business; Planning, Leisure/tourism industry, Conservation, the armed forces or Teaching (Geography is a National Curriculum Subject).

How to be successful in Geography:· Attend all lessons.· Be punctual to lessons.· Attend fieldwork trips.· Purchase core text books.· Make detailed neat notes in lessons. · If you are ill you must ensure that you catch up on missed notes.· Listen carefully to teachers’ advice—especially exam tips!· Complete homework on time.· Complete practice questions.· Make revision resources eg revision cards/posters/mind maps.· Revise outside of lessons.· Read around the subject in your independent study time.· Attend revision sessions when they are offered.· Use the feedback provided to you by your teacher to improve the next 

piece of assessed work you complete.·
