GOS MISSION STATEMENT
MISSION STATEMENT OF THE ANNUAL MEETING
MEETING EVALUATION FORM
GOS VISION STATEMENT
The mission of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society is to help Georgia Orthopaedic
Surgeons provide quality care and lead rewarding professional lives.
The Georgia Orthopaedic Society will accomplish our mission statement by:
1. Offering orthopaedic surgeons educational programs on clinical and
practice management topics;
2. Conducting advocacy efforts on behalf of orthopaedic surgeons and
patients;
3. Providing opportunities to foster personal and professional relations among
orthopaedic surgeons; and
4. Promoting the specialty of orthopaedic surgery to the general public.
The mission of The Georgia Orthopaedic Society is to provide pertinent,
quality continuing medical education for practicing orthopaedic surgeons.
The annual meeting and other educational meetings of our society strive to
do so by affording an opportunity for orthopaedists throughout the state to
exchange ideas regarding patient care. This is done through formal and informal
discussions relevant to orthopaedic issues and through scientific presentations
by orthopaedists with pertinent clinical or research expertise. The result of each
program of the Society is to enable orthopaedists to achieve and maintain the
knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide patient care at optimum levels.
A meeting evaluation form will be handed out during the general session. Please
complete the form and turn it in to the Registration Desk at the conclusion of the
meeting on Saturday. A CME certificate will be available upon receipt of your
completed evaluation form. This activity has been planned and implemented
in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the
joint providership of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the
Georgia Orthopaedic Society. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for
physicians. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons designates this live
activity for a maximum of 13.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should
claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the
activity.

AWARDS
2018 GOS JIM FUNK, MD, DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD WINNERThe Georgia Orthopaedic Society Jim Funk Distinguished Service Award is nominated by the membership, and is presented to one who has contributed significantly to improving the practice of orthopaedic surgery. Previous winners are: Senator Preston Smith (2005), Dr. Frank Kelly (2006), Dr. Skoot Dimon (2007), Dr. George Wright (2008), Dr. Thomas E. Whitesides (2009), Senator Greg Goggans (2010), Dr. Edward Loughlin (2011) and Dr. Robert Wells (2012) Dr. John C. Garrett (2013) Dr. James W. Scott (2014). Congressman Tom Price, M.D. (2015) Howard A. McMahan M.D., Major General Ret. USAF (2016) David F. Apple, Jr., M.D. (2017)
Dr. Kay Kirkpatrick was born in Alabama but grew up in Kentucky with her parents and two brothers. She represented Kentucky in the National Spelling Bee at age 12 and was a huge fan of the “Big Red Machine”, Cincinnati Reds. She was president of her HS class and played flute in the marching band. She grew up on a farm with a multitude of pets and in early days wanted to be a veterinarian. She went to the University of Kentucky where she played powder puff rugby and earned a BS in Biology. She had a number of summer jobs ranging from camp counselor to quality control lab technician at Wiedemann Brewing Company. She went on to med school at the University of Louisville where she was class President for two years and was voted Outstanding Female Graduate, as well as serving on the Student Business Section Council of the AMA. She decided on a career in orthopedics and did a general surgery internship at the University of Miami. She then returned to Louisville to become the program’s first female orthopedic resident. During residency she met her husband, Dr. Tom Haltom, who was completing his residency in Emergency Medicine after attending Old Miss medical school. After completing her residency, surviving a small plane crash in the process, she did a fellowship in hand surgery with Dr. Harold Kleinert.
The two doctor couple started searching for jobs in the South, ending up in Atlanta, where Kay was hired by Dr. Frank Joseph. They were married in 1986, while simultaneously moving and starting new jobs. After both careers were established, Kay and Tom were blessed with a daughter, Sydney and a son, Marshall. The Atlanta Hand Center group grew and eventually merged with North Fulton Orthopaedics, started by Dr. Tom Price to form Compass Orthopaedics. In 1999, Compass and 6 other groups merged to form Resurgens Orthopaedics. Kay served as Co-President of Resurgens with Dr. Steve Wertheim from 2003-2015 growing the group from 54 to nearly 100 docs. Kay got very involved in the medical community early on, participating in the Medical Association of Georgia, Georgia Orthopaedic Society and the State Board of Workers Compensation’s medical subcommittee, which she chaired for a number of years. She was also active in her national specialty organizations, serving on the Occupational Medicine and Patient Safety committees of AAOS, as well as the Government Affairs and Ethics committees of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. She recently served on the Council of the ASSH for a 3 year term and was President of GOS in 2016-17. During her career, Kay has enjoyed mentoring many students and others who were interested in pursuing a career in orthopedics. Both she and Tom serve as volunteers in the MAG Medical Reserve Corps.
Drs. Kay and Tom built a 2nd home in northwest Alabama in 1992 on property that has been in the Kirkpatrick family since 1890; they visit the property as much as possible. Tom is still working as an emergency physician, playing tennis and holding down the fort and the two dogs. Sydney is in her last year of architecture graduate school at Ga Tech and Marshall has just finished his Masters in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford and is working for an automated vehicle company called Nuro in California.
Kay retired last year from clinical practice although she still teaches and consults on patient safety issues. She was convinced to run for an open State Senate seat before she could actually retire and beat 7 other candidates in a special election to become the Senator from District 32. Her golf game has suffered as a result but she is committed to making a difference in many healthcare and other issues at the Capitol. She serves on the Health committee, Military and Veterans, Public Safety, Science and Technology and Ethics. She is running for re-election this fall.
