The Germantown School Board last weekapproved using unassigned fund balance to pay forroofing and asphalting projects.

Under the motion approved by the board, the dis-trict will spend up to but not exceeding $265,000 onthe roofing projects, which will cover two portions ofKennedy Middle School and County Line ElementarySchool; and up to but not exceeding $65,000 on theasphalting project, which will cover the north portionof the Kennedy Middle School parking lot. SchoolBoard member Bruce Warnimont noted that the sec-tions of County Line Elementary School are approxi-mately 20 years old while the portions of KennedyMiddle School are more than 20 years old.

At the start of discussion, Director of BusinessServices Ric Ericksen cited instances from other partsof the state where roofing woes caused problems atother school districts.

Ericksen presented the board with four options tocover the cost of the asphalt and building projects, including issuing $1 million to $3 million in debt, repositioning the current budget, going to referendumor using unassigned fund balance.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce

Dear Dr. Winter, I am a new (complete) denturewearer. How can I determine what proper fittingdentures "should" look, fit and feel like? Neither mytop, nor bottom fit. My top denture doesn't seem to go

up far enough and has about a 1/4" gap whereEVERYTHING (including saliva) goes under mydenture(s) regardless of the denture adhesive I use. They don't line-up, my smile is "lop-sided" and I can'teat. Should my top denture go all the way up to thetop/have a gap or be flush? Thanks!

Dear Kathy, I am sorry you are having problems. The easiest way to answer your question is to say Ihave to look at your dentures to evaluate the size of theperipheries, the seal in the palatal area and the retentionof the new denture. Dentures should fit intimately tothe palate. They should not have a gap that is felt withthe tongue. If the denture is extended too far to the backof your mouth it is possible to feel a gap if your softpalate is covered as your soft palate moves duringspeech and swallowing. If the top denture doesn't seemto go up high enough the dentist needs to evaluate itand make sure there is a good fit and it has beentrimmed properly to insure the denture is fully seated. If it is not all the way down, a proper adjustment couldallow it to seat further. In the absence of good fit thedenture may need to be relined where a new impression

is taken in the denture and it is sent to the lab to haveadditional acrylic added to the inside of the denture. Ifyou can't eat the dentures are not done. I always tellpatients the day they take my dentures home they areonly half done! The final adjustments to your fit andbite will help insure they are optimal. If they don't lineup--and your smile is lop-sided you need to address thiswith your dentist so they can remedy the situation. Ifthe dentist did one or more try-in visits to check smiledisplay, alignment, bite then they should look greatnow. Please ask your dentist to address these itemsuntil you are satisfied. If not seek a second opinion.

Dear Dr. Winter, I had porcelain crowns done 4years ago and I am just not happy. There is now a spacebetween the teeth and they appear to be too yellowwhat should I do? Also a space opened up and I didn'twear the retainer I was given with the crowns.

Well, presumably you approved them before theywere cemented. Patients are always told that the colorof crowns will not change so they must approve the

shape and appearance prior to allocemented. It is much easier to havecolor of the crowns before they arego through the arduous task of cuttemporizing the teeth, making a neredoing the entire process. Not to mecrowns off of teeth is not a benignlead to further trauma to the u

structure and potentially causing tresulting in one or more root canalsNot wearing a mouthguard in

patients clench their teeth or grinallow teeth to move as well so nmouthguard can really change yosituations.

I would speak to your dentist anddo to rectify the situation. Dentists patients to leave happy!

Those sounds can certainly be annoying, but what people don't realize is sometimesthose sounds may be linked to somethingmore serious.

About 7 percent of car crashes arecaused by some kind of vehicle failure,

By Craig W. ArmstrongThe snow and ice have melted, the

ads are clear and spring is here. Winteriving can be dangerous and very frus-

ating. Going to the store or getting toork during the winter takes planning. Youave to allow for road conditions, trafficnd the stress of taking to the ice roads.nce spring arrives, most people just wantrelax behind the wheel and enjoy the

pen road. But there is something else toonsider that you might not have thoughtbout during the winter months-gas.

Getting from place to place in the win-r is enough to occupy your mind, butnce the roads are clear, you want to driverther and faster, and that means using

more gas. Here are a few ways to save ongas as you spend more time in your vehicle.

Slow down and save. The faster yougo, the fewer miles you will get to the gal-lon. Driving over 60 mph will decreaseyour gas mileage. It has been estimatedthat every 5 mph over 60 you drive, youare going to consume more fuel. Besideshow fast you are driving, consider HOWyou are driving. If you rapidly accelerateor brake, you are using more gas and willlower your mileage by more than 30%.

Keep the pressure under control.Correct tire pressure is crucial to good gasmileage. Make sure that your tires areproperly inflated. The correct PSI (poundsper square inch) can be found on the tire,on the sticker on the door or in yourowner's manual.

Change your oil regularly. The classicrule of thumb is to change your oil every

three months or 3,000 miles. This rule is asource of great debate. The point at whichoil breaks down has improved over theyears and many experts feel today's oillasts longer. The best way to judge whenyour oil needs to be changed is by consult-ing the vehicle owner's manual.

Pace yourself. If you do a lot of high-way driving, use your cruise control. Thiswill allow you to keep a constant rate ofspeed and improve your gas mileage.

volve an inspection of several areas, includ-g the battery, engine mechanical, power-ain control, fuel, ignition and emissions. Notvery shop defines a tune-up in this way, how-ver. Generally, the more involved the tune-p, the more it costs.

When scheduling a tune-up, it is importantat you find out what it will entail and howuch it will cost. Be wary of really low esti-ates; chances are the shop is pushing forour business and the final bill for the tune-upll be much higher.

The best shops understand that not allivers know what a tune-up is and request

ne on the assumption that it will fix whateverwrong with their vehicle. They will ask why

you think your vehicle needs a tune-up and go

from there. You may discover that what youreally need are new battery cables ratherthan new spark plugs.

Once you have several estimates, sit downand compare them. Select the shop whoseestimate includes a fairly thorough inspectionat a fair price. You want to make sure thatwhen you drive away from the shop your vehi-cle is running smoothly and efficiently.

The term "tune-up" means different thingsto different people. Keep that in mind as youshop around for estimates. Know what youare getting before you take your vehicle in,and if you are getting a tune-up for any reasonother than maintenance issues, relay that infor-mation to the shop. I f you don't, you could endup paying for a tune-up plus a repair.

paper towel to clean the windows, use news-paper. It does a great job and you will beusing it to get the news AND clean your car.

Determine if your auto shop is green. Askif they recycle oil and antifreeze. Also find outif rebuilt parts are available. The cost of theseparts can be 50% less. You'll be saving moneyand recycling at the same time.

One of the best ways to save money andbe green is to be creative. We could all usesome extra money and maintaining our planetis something we can all take part in. Springhas sprung and things will be getting green.

By Craig W. ArmstrongSpring is here and it's time to enjoy driv-

g again. Gone are the icy roads, blowingow and brown slush. You may be consid-ing a trip to enjoy the warmer spring

eather. You know where you want to go;ou just don't know how to get there. That'shere a GPS can help.

A GPS or Global Positioning System is aarvel of modern technology. It's a deviceat computes your location using triangula-

on. The GPS unit in your vehicle is actuallyst a receiver that receives signals frombiting satellites. Once the unit knowshere you are, it can instruct you on how toet to your destination. After putting yourestination information into the device, it willve you step-by-step instructions on how toet there.

Before you buy any technology, it isport to ask yourself a few questions. Asth most things, you get what you pay for.e more you spend on a GPS, the more fea-res it will contain. Some GPSs come with aundle," which contains extra components.f course, a GPS can also be purchased byelf.

Consider warranty, support andpgrades. The longer warranty you can get,e better. If you are thinking about buyingn extended warranty, make sure it coversmething that is likely to break down. Makere there is toll-free or Internet support.

ome people don't do well with writtenstructions, so it's nice to be able to talk tonother human being. Talk to whoever is sell-g you the device about upgrades. Will it

require an upgrade? Approximately whenwill it need an upgrade? What will it cost?

Find out if the device is "plug and play."This means is it ready to use right out thebox. Consider where you will mount the

device in your vehicle. Does the unit comewith what you will need to mount it?One of the coolest things about many

GPSs is that they can speak. Having a unitthat can speak is convenient. It allows you tokeep your eyes on the road while it givesyou directions. Keep in mind some deviceswill simply say, "Take the next right," whileothers will have the ability to give you spe-cific street names, "Turn left on WashingtonStreet." Some units can be programmed tospeak in an American or English accent or ina male or female voice. Many units canspeak multiple languages. If you can't speakJapanese, this really isn't helpful, but it canbe entertaining on long trips.

Investing in a GPS can save you timeand frustration. Just make sure you do yourhomework and ask the right questions.Getting a GPS that fits your needs will makeyour travels a lot smoother.

The Germantown School Districtpproved the upcoming summer school pro-am last week, though a few board mem-

ers indicated they wish there were moreourses offered.

The pre-kindergarten to eighth gradeogram will run from June 18 to July 18hile makeup courses for freshmen andphomores at the high school will also befered. Summer band, band camp and

nrichment programming available in previ-us years will be offered again this year, ccording to information from the district.

Maria Kucharski, summer school coordi-ator, told the School Board April 8 that newourses will include a gearing up for sec-nd grade course and individualized read-

ing instruction for kindergarten and firstgrade students.

Board member Bruce Warnimont notedthat summer school is voluntary and open toall district residents. Warnimont that made anobservation that he said he has made in thepast about the district summer school pro-gram.

Personally, Im really disappointed thisis all we offer for summer school. In fact, Icant even articulate how deeply distressedthis is all we do for summer school,Warnimont said. I think we have a tremen-dous opportunity to provide better educa-tion, different education, less costly educa-tion if we would take advantage of utilizingthe buildings during the summertime.

Board member Sarah Larson, who grad-uated from the district, recalled a robustoffering of summer school offerings in the

past and asked why the district moved awaythat programming.

Warnimont said that, speaking as a par-ent, the change in philosophy occurred whilethe district was financially robust in themid-1990s.

Board member Tom Barney said while hewas pleased with the new reading program,he wished there were more options. Henoted that a co-worker whose children attendthe Slinger district take a rocket buildingcourse during the summer session.

It would be nice if there was the coolfactor in some of the summer school stuff,Barney said.

Kucharski noted she oversaw the KettleMoraine summer school program for fouryears, and that program served 1,900 stu-dents. That district offered courses such asswimming and fishing. She noted there was a

full-time summer school coordprogramming was run at twotions with a $550,000 busaid the Kettle Moraine progtive impact in what the diststate aid but said the district hhaving summer school as phead in creating its budget.

We really have to budgin a huge way if we want todirection, Kucharski said.

She also noted that in Ketrecreation department was othe school district whereas thates the recreation dGermantown.

The village of Richfield became the firstommunity in Wisconsin to have updatedoter registration lists for upcoming elections.

As of result of the steps taken by the vil-ge, 130 names have been removed frome villages voter registration lists. The

ocess of removing names from voter regis-ation lists involves sending out postcards todividuals who have not cast a ballot in fourears will receive a postcard instructing themn how to remain on the voter registrationt.

State law required communities to havepdated voter registration lists by January.owever, several communities did not meete January deadline and as a result the

state Government Accountability Board(GAB) will not start mailing out postcards tostate residents until April 15.

In a statement issued in late March,Richfield Administrator Joshua Schoemannmade it clear the village was taking steps to

comply with the law even though there weredelays. The fact is that the village of Richfield

was in compliance at the January deadline, and was prepared to meet its statutory obli-gations, Schoemann said in a statement.

In response, village officials contactedthe GAB to get information to conduct thepostcard mailings to remove names from thelist. After receiving the list, Richfield sent out

400 postcards to inactive voters and subse-quently removed the 130 names from the list.

In a statement issued by the village,Schoemann said the village proceeded withthe voter maintenance list process to complywith state law.

We did it because state statutes man-date this duty be completed by the municipalclerk. Once were were informed that theGAB would not be performing the voterrecord maintenance within the required time-frame we moved quickly to bring our com-munity into compliance, regardless of whatany other community in the state was doing,Schoemann said. To us, the minimal cost of$261 to send out the postcards was a small

price to pay to have the molist possible.

The village said the statetion system will be purged bystatement from the village,Caroline Fochs said village

overwhelming feedback relages steps to update the volist.

Very rarely do we get sing of community support foing the law and doing our jothe statement.
