Lets face it. The Great Recession put a kink in manyAmericans retirement plans. Combine that financial blowwith the general uncertainty regarding Medicare and futurecost of private health insurance.

As a result, more boomers are staying the workforce longer. So what does this mean forndividuals? Along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, its important that boomers routinely getheir hearing checked-and that they address any hearing loss so it doesnt undermine their efforts onhe job or their quality of life.

Maturing workers should be getting their hearing checked. And if there is hearing loss theyshould discuss with their hearing healthcare provider whether or not hearing aids could help.

When people with even mild hearing loss use hearing aids, they improve their jobperformance, increase their earning potential, enhance their communication skills and improve theirprofessional relationships.

I urge anyone planning to stay in the workforce longer to take that first most critical step tooptimizing your hearing health and enhancing your chances for career success by taking a hearingest. Your hearing health and continued job success are within your control.

Boomers benefit fromhearing aids as they stayin the workforce longer

all of his instincts. Many dogs are territorial. And when chained they become extremely protective of their area prone to biting. Often times they feel trapped and confined which leads them to be frustrated, agitated, and

Everyone knows they need to do it, but themost important thing with exercise is actuallygetting started and making it a habit.

The good news is there are many ways tomake fitness a part of ones daily routine, andthe positives are plentiful.

Marilyn Ranney, a clinical exercise physiol-ogist and certified wellness coach with theWorkforce Health division of Froedtert and TheMedical College of Wisconsin, emphasizedthat exercise is a must, not a maybe.

Exercise is essential, she said. It is a nec-essary component of leading a healthylifestyle.

Seconded Dan Zeroth, recreation supervi-sor with the Menomonee Falls CommunityEducation & Recreation Department, Physicalactivity is an important part of staying fit nomatter what age you are.

And the options are endless, he said.Aside from just the structured activities,

theres also sports leagues and many passiveforms of recreation out there, said Zeroth. There are so many different ways to get fit.

Some things to keep in mind: Consult with a physician: One should

always begin any new vigorous exercise pro-gram by checking in with the doctor, said

Ranney. Make sure to get the okay before youstart anything new, she said. Set some goals: Edward Pipp, owner of

Preferred Fitness in Germantown, said itsimportant to set goals both long term andshort term, but be realistic and dont overwhelmyourself.

The federal governments Physical ActivityGuidelines for Americans recommend two anda half hours of exercise per week for the aver-age healthy adult to maintain ones weight andbetween three and five hours per week forweight loss. This, said Ranney, could mean abrisk walk or strength-training or a combinationof things, and you should try to spread that outover a weeks time.

Make it Me Time: Schedule your work-out time keep it, said Pipp. Mark time off onyour calendar, he said. This is your personal

time so schedule it as you would other thingsyou enjoy. All the while keep your eyes on the prize,

he said.Find your reason to workout, Pipp

advised. This is the best way to stick to a work-out routine.

Dont overdo it: Individuals often assumethe more exercise, the better, but this is thewrong approach for a variety of reasons,

explained Pipp.Slow and consistent is the

factor in achieving desired rstarted, especially if someoncised in awhile, he said. Doisoon or performing intense exebasis will have deleterious effecle/tendon strains, loss of leaness-level plateaus.

Pipp said one should starta week, with a combination weight training and stretching.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce

Dear Dr. Winter, Mother is 96 years old and shestarted wearing dentures at about 60. She has no lowerbone left! She has tried denture paste but it is useless.

She eats the paste, gets sick to her stomach and whenshe leaves it out her lower denture bounces like abasketball when trying to eat. She can only drink herfood now and is not a candidate for any surgery. Anysuggestions?

Dear L, I am sorry for your mothers problems. Iwould need to see her existing denture to evaluate thebite, the extensions of the denture acrylic and make sureit is fabricated properly to optimize her situation. Whenpeople have no bone left a soft silicone liner may helpto increase the hold of the lower denture and providemore comfort. We do this by first testing it in tissueconditioner (like a soft band-aid) to see if her biting andchewing can be improved prior to making her a new setof dentures. That way she can see if we can help herbefore undergoing the expense of a new set of dentures.Lastly, I have successfully used mini-implants tostabilize dentures in patients with very little bone as wecan place these in as little as 10 mm of bone. Thesewould greatly help keep the dentures in place and

prevent movement that interferes with her chewing! You can see videos of this on our website.

Dear Dr. Winter, I am a male that has suffered frombulimia for many years since high school wrestlingmade me constantly drop weight for my matches. I amafraid I have permanently damaged my teeth and myfront teeth are chipping and thin. What do you suggest Ido to prevent further tooth destruction and reverse thedamage I have done? I am free from purging for overtwo years and now its time to fix myself.

Dear Steve, I applaud you for your courageousbattle with a most troubling and debilitating illness. Ialso appreciate bringing this illness to the attention offellow men, as this disease doesnt just affect women.Bulimia or binging and purging are a subset of Anorexiaand the acid reflux effects of purging can cause damage

to enamel of teeth. I would need tenamel is gone to discuss treatmeevaluate your remaining enamelsensitivity and your bite to determcrowns, orthodontics or perhaconservative fillings. It is important

major problem of acid erosion is thatand get thin, the opposing teeth supeup onto the worn area. So treating babout the thinning worn teeth but ththe opposing teeth. You can see extreatment on www.winterdental

We welcome our readers to call u
