Thesis. - François Tack was the leader of a V.O.C. delegation to Susuhunan

Amangkurat II, ruler of the kingdom of Mataram, who held court in Kartasura. The

aim of this mission was to make a settlement concerning the money the Susuhunan

owed to the V.O.C and to ask for extradition of Surapati, a former Balinese slave,

who raided the countryside south of Batavia and who had sought refuge at the court

of Amangkurat II. The Dutch who thought of Surapati as a murderer, never

succeeded to caputure him. The Javanese on the other hand thought of him as a

warrior for freedom. The story of Surapati's life is told in the Javanese text Babad

Kraton.

Abel Tasman had two ships under his command during

his memorable voyage to the mysterious 'Southland' in

1642: the yacht 'Heemskerck' and the fluyt 'Zeehaen'.

Cor Emke has recorded the entire (experimental)

building process on cad drawings. These drawings are

not only printed but also recorded on cd-rom. This cd-rom enables the model builder

to examine and print each part of the ship in a scale selected by himself. In the book

to which the cd-rom belongs, Peter Sigmond describes the historical background of

Tasman's expedition. Original illustrations from Tasman's journal, and paintings and

pictures of yachts and fluyts illustrate the narrative. The book also offers an analysis

of seventeenth-century shipbuilding.

time. After he divided his fleet on January 6, 1607, Matelief

visited Bantam, Jakatra, Amboina, and Ternate, where he built

a fort, and the China coast, where he attempted to negotiate a

trade agreement. His journal is well written and exceedingly

- During this second voyage of the Dutch to the East

Indies superior leadership was displayed. The able and

sympathetic admiral, Jacob van Neck, was in supreme

command. All eight ships reached Bantam and four of

them were able to return immediately, loaded with

pepper. The remaining four, under the command of vice-admiral Wybrant van

Warwijck, continued the journey to Amboyna, the chief centre of the clove trade in

the Spice Islands. Warwijck despatched his deputy, Jacob van Heemskerck, to the

Banda Archipelago, the only place in the world in those days where nutmeg and its

The Meermin slave mutiny took place in February 1766 and lasted

for three weeks. The Meermin was one of many slave ships owned

by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Her final voyage was cut

short by the mutiny of her cargo of Malagasy people, who had been

sold to Dutch East India Company officials on Madagascar to be used as company

slaves in its Cape Colony in southern Africa. During the mutiny half the ship's crew

and almost 30 Malagasy lost their lives.

Van Riebeeck Society, 2nd series, 13. - Hendrik Swellengrebel Jr (1734-1803) was

the son of Hendrik Swellengrebel who served as governor for a number of years and

retained extensive properties there. The younger Swellengrebel lived a comfortable

life in the Netherlands, but visited the Cape between 1776–1777. Thereafter he

retained an interest in Cape affairs. He became associated with the rebel Cape Patriot

movement and did much to promote its economy. His letters contain much

information on the social history of the colony in the last quarter of the 18th century.
