Pressure in the Church Teaching Supposed Scripture basis

Material wealth is

my right

Prov 13:22 (A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children, but a sinner's wealth is

stored up for the righteous.)

I work to become

rich

Deut 8:18 (But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce

wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.)

Godly people are

rich

The Lord has greatly blessed my master (Abraham), so that he has become rich; and He has

given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and maids, and camels and

donkeys. Genesis 24:35

Now Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. And the Lord blessed

him, and the man became rich, and continued to grow richer until he became very wealthy; for

he had possessions of flocks and herds and a great household. Genesis 26:12-14

(Jacob) became exceedingly prosperous, and had large flocks and female and male servants and

camels and donkeys. Genesis 30:43

Ungodly people are

poor

Poverty and shame will come to him who neglects discipline. Proverbs 13:18

I give to get Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and

running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to

you."

I spend on whatever

I want, whenever I

want

Proverbs 13:4 The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully

satisfied.

1 Tim 6:3-10

If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound

instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 he is conceited

and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and

quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5

and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of

the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing

into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and

clothing, we will be content with that. 9 People who want to get rich fall into

temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge

men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of

evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and

pierced themselves with many griefs.

Luke 12:15

Then he (Jesus) said to them, "Watch out!

Be on your guard against all kinds of greed;

a man's life does not consist in the

abundance of his possessions."

The Traps 1.We easily fall into the temptation to ‘love of money’ or

‘coveting’

2. Can easily shift our focus from eternity to the here and

now.

3. Gives a false sense of security

4. Gives a false identity

5. Gives a false sense of freedom

6. Breeds Ingratitude and a lack of Contentment

Page 7: Get Rich or Die Trying Powerpoint

Contentment “It is a very rare thing to meet with people who say that they have

enough, for those who have most generally desire more, and those

who have little feel that contentment is a thing which cannot

reasonably be expected from them. For any person honestly and

truthfully to say, "I have enough," is so unusual a circumstance that I

do not remember having heard it often. I have done so a few times, at

long intervals.” C. H. Spurgeon

“Who is rich? He that is content. Who is that? Nobody”.(Benjamin

Franklin)

“Some are contented because they are utterly reckless, and only

consider present pleasure. They live from hand to mouth, and never

calculate what may happen tomorrow. Laying by for a rainy day

seems to them to be preposterous. If they have just sufficient for the passing hour, it is quite enough for them” C. H Spurgeon

Page 8: Get Rich or Die Trying Powerpoint

Definition of Contentment It is a disposition of mind in which our desires are confined to what we

enjoy without murmuring at our lot, or wishing fervently for more.

Contentment does not imply unconcern about our welfare, or that we

should not have a sense of anything uneasy or distressing; nor does

it give any countenance to idleness, or prevent diligent endeavours to

improve our circumstances. It is to be free from care, worry and

anxiety because of satisfaction with what is already one's own. The

Hebrew means simply "to be pleased." It is more inward than

satisfaction; Contentment is a habit or permanent state of mind,

satisfaction has to do with some particular occurrence or object.

Page 9: Get Rich or Die Trying Powerpoint

Symptoms of Discontentment •What we have always falls short of what we want

•Focuses on what we don’t have

•Does not give thanks for what has been received

•Misses the wonder of Gods miraculous daily

provision

•Compares itself with other people in a distorted way

– The grass is always greener on the other side of the

fence

•Results in murmuring and complaining

•Tries to amass for tomorrows needs today

•Attitude of entitlement, basic needs are not enough,

luxuries are my right

Freedom From The Trap

• Heb 13:5-6 Keep your lives free from the love of money and

be content with what you have, because God has said,

"Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." a 6 So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" b
