At the historic Ryman Auditoriumin downtown Nashville through January.

N othing says “Nashville” quite like a night at the Grand Ole Opry – the show that made country music famous. All the Opry fun dates back to 1925, when

Nashville radio station WSM announcer George D. Hay introduced fiddle player Uncle Jimmy Thompson as the first performer on a new show called the “WSM Barn Dance” and unwittingly paved the way for the world’s longest-running live radio show. Now in its 86th year, the show Hay started has launched countless country music careers and led the way for Nashville to become known as Music City around the globe. Early Opry performers such as Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, Ernest Tubb, and Bill Monroe became musical foundations for the Opry during its early years. Later, other Opry stars would become entertainment icons in their own right, including Patsy Cline, George Jones, and Bill Anderson. Today, the Opry makes its home at the Grand Ole Opry House, offering performances every Friday and

Saturday night as well as Tuesdays March – December. Each Opry show highlights a mix of new stars, superstars, and legends of country music performing a wide range of styles under the country umbrella. Dierks Bentley, Jimmy Dickens, Vince Gill, Charley Pride, Josh Turner, and Carrie Underwood are among the Opry’s 60+ members today.Thousands of people make pilgrimages every year to see and hear these stars and more, while millions tune in to enjoy the Opry via 650 WSM, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, syndicated radio, TV, opry.com, or the Opry’s mobile app. Fans can also get more up-to-the-minute information and news by following the Grand Ole Opry on Facebook and Twitter. Still, there’s nothing like being in the Opry House for a live Opry performance. Meanwhile, CMA award-winning Opry member Blake Shelton is set to welcome fans to the Opry House daily as the video host of Opry Backstage Pass Tours, a one-of-a-kind experience that gives guests a look behind the scenes of country’s most famous show..

T he 29th annual A Country Christmas, presented by Kodak, returns to Nashville’s Gaylord Opryland Resort with beloved traditions and the chance to make new ones beginning Nov. 16, 2012 and running

through Jan. 1, 2013. “With more than two million twinkling lights and acres of stunning decorations that attract visitors from all over the world, there’s no better place to celebrate the season,” said Gaylord Opryland General Manager Pete Weien. “And, of course, it wouldn’t be Music City, USA, without amazing live shows and entertainment.” A Country Christmas has been hailed as one of the “Ten Great Places to Catch up with Santa” by USA Today; “The Most Christmassy Hotel in the Nation” by the Travel Channel’s Extreme Christmas; one of the top ten places to spend Christmas in the world by Travel + Leisure; and a “Nashville treasure” by Southern Living. This Christmas, Gaylord Opryland welcomes country music superstar and Grand Ole Opry member Lorrie Morgan for Lorrie Morgan’s Enchanted Christmas Dinner & Show. Lorrie and her exceptional family of musicians will take audiences on an enchanting journey through Christ-mases past and present, featuring songs from Lorrie’s popular Merry Christmas from London album along with the many hits of her platinum-selling, 16-album career. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular® starring the Rockettes return to the Grand Ole Opry House with an unforgettable 2012 edition featuring dazzling costumes and a new 3D movie scene, as Santa Claus and his rein-deer take audiences on a magical journey experiencing the sights and sounds of New York City. Additionally, the stage will come alive with beloved numbers like the leg-endary “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and the stunning reenactment of the first Christmas in the “Living Nativity.” Guests can now animate their holiday getaway with interactive experiences with favorite characters from such DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. films as Shrek, Kung Fu

Panda and Madagascar. The Christmassy DreamWorks Experience features the resort’s popular ICE! attraction, the ShrekFeast interactive character meal, “Character Passport” meet and greets, Gingy’s Gingerbread Decorat-ing, DreamWorks-themed scavenger hunt, the Holiday Shrektacular street party and more. Forty artisans from Harbin, China are working to transform two million pounds of ice into larger-than-life colorful sculptures and incredible 20-foot-tall ice slides. ICE!™ featuring DreamWorks’ Shrek the Halls—presented by Coca-Cola and sponsored by Delta Dental of Tennes-see and NovaCopy—will be bigger than ever in the new 40,000-square-foot Gaylord Opryland Events Center. When Shrek tries to plan the “perfect Christmas” for Fiona and the kids, his plans are disrupted by chaos and com-motion. But, in the end, Shrek learns the true meaning of the holiday. The festivities continue with Holly Jolly Town Square, a step back in time to the nostalgic 1950s with all the shops from main street, a holiday kids’ train and story time with Mrs. Claus; the Hall of Trees display benefiting local chari-ties; the Treasures for the Holidays craft and gift show; photos with Santa; carriage rides; a FREE outdoor nativity display and more. Fun-filled performances, chef-prepared meals and sweeping views of the Nashville skyline await guests on a one-of-a-kind Christmas cruise down the Cumberland River aboard the beautiful General Jackson Showboat—one of the largest showboats in the country. A Country Christmas vacation packages and event tickets are available at www.ChristmasAtGaylordOpry-land.com or by calling 1-888-999-OPRY (6779).

Once in a while you stumble across an entertainer who is so engaging, so charismatic, so talented,

that you have to go back time and time again. Chelsea Field is one such entertainer. But as much as Chelsea enjoys writing and performing, she loves the connection with her audiences even more. “To hear that something I wrote or a performance I gave touched someone means everything to me,” she said. “That’s what my music is really all about, giving expression to love and loss, hopes and dreams, joy and sadness. Those are experiences and emotions we all have and if my music can help someone through a rough spot or give their joy wings, then I can’t ask for any more than that.”

Chelsea has become a regular opening act for such well-known artists as Big & Rich, Jason Aldean, Keith Anderson, Billy Currington, Dierks Bentley, Tracy Byrd, and Miranda Lambert, to name a few. On select dates, Chelsea will be making special appearances at Tequila Cowboy and the Wildhorse. Find Chelsea at www.chealseafield.net and at myspace.com/chelseafield.

Are you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is

definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

Conway Twitty to Sara Evans and Toby Keith. There is entertainment for the entire family. The “Best of Country” Dinner and Show, throughout their season, includes guest stars such as “Opry Star” Jeannie Seely, “The Fiddle Man” Tim Watson, Tommy Cash, Diana Murrell, Paula Poe (from the Tammy Wynette Show) and many others. This is a fantastic show you won’t want to miss! The standing ovation at the end of the show is an indication of the great time the audience had. Following the show there is a meet and greet with the performers. I would highly recommend that visitors to Nashville experience Nashville Nightlife where you will see the best of country from old to new. Come see why the Nashville Nightlife Dinner Theater presents a Dinner and Country Music Show voted the best combination in Nashville. Don’t miss this Nashville tradition. Located at 2416 Music Valley Drive in Music Valley Village across the street from the Gaylord Opryland Resort and the Grand Ole Opry. Call 615-885-4747 or 1-800-573-7973 for information and reservations or go to www.nashvillenightlife.com. Tour groups are welcome.

This Greek revival house was home to five generations of the Harding-Jackson family, original owners of the Bell Meade Farm. In the late 19th century, the farm encompassed 5,400 acres and was one of the largest private estates in Nashville and was a thoroughbred nursery famous for breeding and training championship race horses. Located at 5025 Harding Rd, Nashville. Call 615-356-0501 or visit www.bellemeadeplantation.com.

L et me be the first to welcome you to our beauti-ful city of Nashville or as I love to call it … Music City, USA! My name is Christina Sheer and I am delighted to be the newest addition to the Getaway

Nashville team as the Social Media Manager. Ten years ago I moved from Motown to Music City to pursue a career within the entertainment industry and to my surprise I fell in love with this charming little big city. From the endless live music scene to the kindest strangers you will ever meet, Nashville quickly became my home sweet home and I’m sure it will feel like home to you too. I encourage YOU to explore Music City and Middle Tennessee with an open mind! During your visit I’m sure you will experience lively country music and designer cowboy boots but you will also discover a vibrant soul music scene and fashionable hipsters. Whether you are an aspiring foodie dining at an East Nashville restaurant or an art lover at a downtown gallery during the Nashville Art Crawl … there is something for everyone. Here are a few of Music City’s hidden jems: Rock Music Fan? Stop by Third Man Records at 23 7th Av-enue South to see where Jack White is hard at work champi-oning the local rock scene. Be sure to pick up vinyl recordings

from some our local favorites such as Jeff The Brotherhood, PUJOL and The Black Belles.

Pancake Lover? Pancake Pantry is by far one of the premiere breakfast options in Nashville and the long line wrapped around the building proves it! Rain, snow or shine there is typically a wait at the 21st Avenue Pancake Pantry location but I promise you it’s worth it. Poster Collector? One of the oldest working let-terpress print shops in America is located on Broad-way in the heart of downtown Nashville. The Hatch Show Print features unique posters of performers ranging from Country Music Hall of Famers Hank

Williams and Johnny Cash to contemporary stars such as Garth Brooks and Wynonna Judd. While visiting our beautiful city be sure to tell us about your experience in 5 ways:

1. Tweet to me at @ITSaSHEERthing2. Post a message on the Getaway Nashville

Facebook Page3. Check In to your favorite restaurants on Foursquare4. Write reviews about your hotel stay on TripAdvisor5. Post photographs of your and your friends on Instagram

There is only one Music City, and today Nashville continues its emergence as a cultural, artistic and entertainment-rich

destination, filled with unique music, a myriad of art galleries, botanical gardens and greenways, historic homes, honky-tonks and culinary delights. There’s a whole host of attractions that have made Music City famous. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which includes over a million artifacts exploring country’s connections to blues, R&B and pop, will also feature the temporary exhibit, The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and California Country opening in March 2012. Across the street stands the home of the Grammy-award winning Nashville Symphony, the dazzling $123 million Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Inspired by the greatest concert halls in the world, the 197,000-square-foot classically-

columned venue offers an unparalleled acoustical experience. Nashville has a pristine collection of antebellum estate mansions: Belle Meade, where a string of winning thoroughbreds was raised; The Hermitage, presidential home of Andrew Jackson; and Belmont Mansion, drenched in Victorian grandeur. Tour the beautifully-restored hilltop State Capitol building, then walk down to the Tennessee State Museum for an educational tour of the state’s history and culture. Dubbed the Athens of the South for its elegance, style and many academic institutions, Nashville claims a full-size replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, complete with the 42-ft high statue Athena, the tallest indoor sculpture in the western world. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, an exquisitely converted Art Deco post office, hosts roving exhibitions changing every couple of months. The mansion at Cheekwood houses an extensive art gallery surrounded by 55 acres of divine gardens. What truly sets the city apart is the music. Music is the very heart of Nashville. Long recognized as the world’s capital of country music, Music City also boasts sounds of pop, rock, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, blues and soul. Supported by rhythm tracks of culture and history, Nashville is uniquely and authentically “Music City.” In Nashville you can hear great music 24/7, 365 days a year. A great place to begin a tour is on Lower Broadway where honky tonks line the street. Here you’ll find evocative names like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and Robert’s Western World, and you never know who you might see (or hear), a current star or the next big thing.

You’ll catch star-dusted pickers and songwriters all over town, in places like bluegrass venue Station Inn, the rockin’ Exit/In, the honky tonkin’ bars on Broadway, the song-centered Bluebird Café or the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Of course, the ultimate country venue is the Grand Ole Opry House, where legends and current stars perform on the nation’s longest-running live radio program. Eating and drinking are high on the list of priorities. Nashville’s palate offers everything from Southen fare to haute cuisine with quite literally everything in between. Here, a perfect barbecue is as celebrated as the most spectacular creation from any of the city’s award-winning chefs. Whether it’s a family-friendly meal, dinner and a show or a romantic repast, the city’s restaurants serve every dish with a side of Southern hospitality. With its charming mix of musical, historical and cultural flavors, Nashville is truly a city for all seasons and styles. So whether it’s listening to live music, soaking in the art scene, exploring history or simply relaxing, you’ll find many ways to enjoy Music City and discover why music calls us home.

DID YOU KNOW…The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville.

DID YOU KNOW…That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art.

DID YOU KNOW…Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon.

DID YOU KNOW…Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album.

The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere.

DID YOU KNOW…Country singer Randy Travis was a cook and dishwasher at the Nashville Palace before he made it big.

DID YOU KNOW…Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were

two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep.

DID YOU KNOW…In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio.

DID YOU KNOW…The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art.

DID YOU KNOW…African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals,

angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.

november/december 2012 53

DID YOU KNOW…Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson.

DID YOU KNOW…The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come.

DID YOU KNOW…Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry.

DID YOU KNOW…After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine

Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open by day as a museum and at night plays hosts to artists of all genres.

DID YOU KNOW…Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job.

DID YOU KNOW…That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish.

DID YOU KNOW…President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo.

DID YOU KNOW…Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast.

DID YOU KNOW…The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee.

DID YOU KNOW…The Union Station Hotel, a National Historic Landmark since 1977, was originally built in 1900 as the city’s railroad station.
