Getting startedWelcome to Interactive Science Online Self-study and Assessment Centre (SAC). Whether you are a teacher trying to assess your students’ scientific knowledge or you are a student who would like to strengthen scientific knowledge, SAC provides all the necessary tools to fulfill your needs. In particular, students can understand their strengths and weaknesses through their practices in the self-study corner (Fig.1).

This users’ manual is mainly divided into two parts:

Part one is designed to help teachers in assigning a test and analysing their students’ performances.

Part two is designed to help SAC administrators of the schools to manage the database of teachers and view the databases of classes and students.

Part ONE: Teacher’s login

Welcome to SACYour computer has to be connected to the Internet before you can access SAC. Open Internet Explorer and type http://sac. i s.ilongman.com in the URL field. Choose English for the interface of SAC (Fig.2).

Enter your username and password in the corresponding fields (Fig.3). Click ‘Submit’ to log into the system.

You should set up an easy-to-remember password. Passwords that can be easily guessed or cracked using password crackers are not advised to use. See p. 21 to learn how to change your password.

Tips If you forgot your password, enter your username and click ‘Forgot password’. The password will be automatically sent to your e-mail account registered in SAC.

Getting familiar with the interfaceYou will see the screen as shown in Fig.4 after you have logged into the system as a teacher. SAC provides all the necessary tools for teachers to assess their students’ performance. Click the tabs on the toolbar (Fig.5) to access the various functions of the system.

Remember to logout the system to end your working session.

Paper managementClick ‘Paper management’ tab and open ‘Paper management’ page (Fig.6). Then click a chapter on the leftmost column to proceed to the ‘View chapter’ page.

View existing test papers

On the ‘View chapter’ page, you will see a table showing the papers available for the chapter (Fig.7). Click the test name on the leftmost column to view the content of the test paper (Fig. 8).

Test managementBy default, teachers will enter the ‘Test management’ page right after logging into the system. Fig.9 shows the interface and the functions accessible on this page.

Add a testClick ‘Add test’ to proceed to the ‘Add test’ page (Fig.10).

First, select the chapter/test from the pull-down menu. Then, select the classes that will do the test. Set the period in which the test is available for the specified classes. Next, enter the duration of the test. You can also select certain classes that are allowed to view the results. Finally, click ‘Add Test’ on the top/bottom to assign the test to students (Fig.11).

Modify a test

After you have assigned a test to the students, you can

change the preferences of the tests if necessary. To do so, click the test name on the ‘Test management’ page and enter the ‘Update test’ page (Fig.12).

On the ‘Update test’ page, teachers can change the classes who are going to do the test. Teachers can also modify the period and duration in which the test is available to the students. Teachers may also allow students to view their results and the answers for the test.

Remove a testIf teachers want to remove the tests assigned, click the box in front of the test name and click ‘Remove test’. After the removal is confirmed, the selected tests will no longer be available to students.

Download test paperOn the ‘Test management’ page, you can choose which test papers or answers to be downloaded. Click the download

tips To select all the tests in one time, click the k box at the top left corner. Click ‘Remove test’ to remove all the tests shown in the table.

note When the test selected to be removed has already had the students’ results, these results will be removed altogether.

button and choose ‘Save’ in the dialog box popped up to save the document (Fig.13).

Test logClick ‘Test log’ on the toolbar to proceed to the ‘Test log’ page (Fig.14). On this page, teachers can view the test results of students and the analysis of their performances.

Remind studentsTeachers can remind their students the deadline of the test assigned. On the ‘Test log’ page, click ‘Remind student’. Choose a method to remind students from the dialog box

View results and analysisAfter students have completed the test, the system will update the test results and automatically analyse the performance of the students.

Result generated by studentBy default, the results generated by students will be shown. The screen will automatically refresh and show the results and analysis generated by students (Fig.16).

Result generated by classClick the button in the ‘order by’ combo box. Select ‘Generated by Class’. The screen will automatically refresh and show the results and analysis generated by class (Fig.17).

Result and analysis of a particular studentYou can look up the result and the performance analysis of each student. Click ‘Look up’ and proceed to the ‘View result in details’ page (Fig.18).

Export Students’ resultsOn the ‘Test log’ page, click ‘Export’ to export the result of all students.

Student databaseYou can view the data of the students online or export the data to common file formats. Click ‘Student database’ tab to proceed to the ‘Student database’ page (Fig.19).

Export students’ dataClick ‘Export data’. On the ‘Export data’ page (Fig.21), set the preference how you export the data. Select the fields of data, the classes and the file format being exported. Finally, click ‘Export data’ and choose ‘Save’ in the dialog box popped up (Fig.20).

Send e-mailYou can send e-mail messages to your SAC administrator, other teachers already registered in the SAC database and your students. Click ‘Send e-mail’ tab on the toolbar. In the screen shown in Fig.22, select the receivers, type the subject and the content of the e-mail in the text fields provided. Finally, click ‘Send’ to deliver the mail to the receivers.

Messages to your studentsBesides sending e-mails, the system also allows you to send messages to your students. Click ‘Message to student’ on the toolbar. On the ‘Message to student’ page (Fig.23), you can send messages, view the messages sent to your students or remove the message history.

Send messagesClick ‘Add message’ to proceed to the next page (Fig.24). Select the receivers. Then, type the subject and the content of the message. Finally, click ‘Post’ to send the message to the specified students.

Remove message historyOn the ‘Message to student’ page, click the box in front of the name of each message. Click ‘Remove message’ to remove the selected message. Or click the box on the top to select all messages to be removed.

Change your passwordTo change your password, click ‘Change your password’ tab on the toolbar. Enter your old password and your new password in the fields provided. Finally, click ‘Submit’. The new password will be effective immediately after you have received a confirmation message from the system (Fig.25).

Part TWO: Administrator’s loginSAC administrators can maintain the database using Internet browsers. Open Internet Explorer and type http://sac. i s.ilongman.com in the URL field. Choose English for the interface and then select SAC administrator login. Enter your username and password in the fields provided (Fig.26). You will see the screen as shown in Fig.27 after you have successfully logged into the system. Click the tabs on the top of the screen (Fig.28) to access various functions of the system.

Database management

Class databaseYou will enter the ‘Class database’ page (Fig.29) by default after you have logged into the system as an administrator. On this page, you can view forms and classes in the database.

Teacher databaseSAC administrators can change the information of the teachers. Click ‘Teacher database’ tab to proceed to the ‘Teacher database’ page (Fig.30).

Import teachersSAC provides the capability of importing teacher accounts. Click ‘Import teachers’ to proceed to the ‘Import teachers’ page (Fig.31). Click ‘Browse’ and select the file for import. Click ‘Submit’ and the teacher accounts will be imported immediately (Fig.32).

Add teacher accountAdministrators can create one teacher account each time. Click ‘Add teacher account’ and proceed. On the next page, fill the information in the fields provided (Fig.33). Finally, click ‘Submit’ and the teacher account will be created.

Update teacher accountAdministrators can help a particular teacher to update his/her information including his/her name, class, username, password and e-mail address. Click the name of the teacher in the table and enter the ‘Update teacher account’ page (similar to Fig. 33). Fill in the fields provided. Finally, click ‘Submit’ and the information of the teacher will be updated immediately.

Remove teacher accountSelect the teachers to be removed by clicking the box in front of the names of the teachers (Fig.34). Click ‘Remove teacher account’. Click ‘Yes’ in the dialog box popped up and the selected accounts will be removed immediately.

Change teacher passwordAdministrators can help teachers to change their passwords without knowing their old ones. Click ‘Change teacher password’. On the next page, select the teachers who need to change their passwords. Enter the passwords in the fields provided. Finally, click ‘Submit’ and the new password will be effective immediately.

Send e-mailsAdministrators can send e-mails to the teachers through SAC. Click ‘Send e-mail’. On the next page (Fig.35), select the receivers first. Then, type the subject and the content in the fields provided. Finally, click ‘Send’ to deliver your mail.

Export dataAdministrators can export teachers’ information in Microsoft® Word (rtf) or Excel (csv) format. Click ‘Export data’ to proceed to the ‘Export data’ page. Select the fields of data and the file format to be exported (Fig.36). Finally, click ‘Submit’ and choose ‘Open’ or ‘Save’ in the dialog box popped up.

Student databaseAdministrators can change the information of the students. Click ‘Student database’ to proceed to the ‘Student database’ page (Fig.37).

View student informationAdministrators can view the students’ information. This includes the student’s name, class number, SAMS ID, and e-mail address. Click the student name to proceed to the ‘View student account’ page (Fig.38).

Change class passwordAdministrators can help a class of students to change their passwords without knowing their old ones. Click ‘Change class password’. On the next page, select the classes of students that need to be given a set of new passwords. Enter the password in the fields provided (Fig.39). Finally, click ‘Submit’ and the password will be effective immediately.

Export dataAdministrators can export students’ information in Microsoft® Word (rtf) or Excel (csv) format. Click ‘Export data’ to proceed to the ‘Export data’ page. Change administrator’s passwordClick ‘Change your password’. On the next page, enter your old password and new password in the fields provided (Fig.41). Finally, click ‘Submit’. Your new password will be effective immediately.
