My Gingerbread House

I made a house of gingerbread. It was so sugary sweet.

It took me all day long to make,But lasted just a week!

Monday - I ate the ceiling.Tuesday - I ate the door.

Wednesday - I ate the windows.Thursday - I ate the floor.Friday - I ate all four walls.Saturday - I ate the lawn.

Sunday - I licked up the crumbs.

Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments II

Ingredients and InstructionsMix 3/4 to 1 cup applesauce with 1 (4.12-ounce) bottle ground cinnamon to form a stiff dough. Roll out to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters. Make hole for ribbon. Carefully put on rack to dry. Let air dry several days, turning occasionally. Makes 12 sweet-smelling, wonderfully aromatic ornaments.

Note: These are NON-EDIBLE.

The ingredients 1 cup cinnamon3/4 cup applesauce1 teaspoon ground nutmeg1/4 cup white glue

How to do it Mix all ingredients well until they form a dough. Flatten the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Keep in mind that the dough will be quite dry, and can be tricky to work with.

Use cookie cutters to cut out festive holiday shapes. Use a toothpick, pencil or a drinking straw to punch a small hole in the top of each ornament if you plan to hang them. Keep them flat and move them to a warm, dry spot for 48 hours to allow them to dry. Alternatively, put them in a warm (not hot!) oven overnight.

Social Studies Gingerbread writing ideas-

Page 29: Gingerbread Man unit 2

I also do a unit on the Gingerbread Man.  For one activity, I tie it into our study of communities in Social Studies.  We talk about different places in our community where you can go, and each student selects a business or public place to write about.  They each write a page for a class book where the Gingerbread Man visits the place, gets into some kind of mischief, and is finally chased away saying "Run, run as fast as you can!  You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!"  We use transition words and decide as a class what order the pages should be put in.  I type them up and have the students illustrate a page to go with it, then bind the pages into a class book.  They turn out really, really cute!  One year, one of my creative students ended the story with the Gingerbread Man running into our classroom and me catching him and eating him!

DIFFERENT IDEAS for Gingerbread Man:

Bring in 2 kinds of Gingerbread men cookies. Graph your favorite type of gingerbread cookie. Graph results on graphing pocket chart. Discuss class results.

Bring in Little Debbie gingerbread men snack cookies. Let the children unwrap them and take only 1 bite. Then say, "Freeze!" Make a class graph to show which part of the cookie they bit first. Talk about the graph finding which part had the most, the least, the same? Let them finish the cookie.

Take gingerbread cut outs & write numbers of them 0-9 & have students draw two & add them together. Or use < or > or =.

Cooking-All students participate in all parts of the work. The dixie cups referred to are the 5 oz wax coated paper cups (Dixie brand) And these are all cooked in a covered electric skillet.
