DESCRIPTION

"Ut pictura poses ... Gitane's "The Blood" is a surrealist-poetic-erotic feast of language and art, best to be spoken aloud to feel the words drip from the tongue (no pun intended!) Like her words, Gitane?s art is both spiritual and earth-bound in Nature as well as the likes of modern warfare; like a murder of Crows, her work gathers in the trees as a warning and a welcome ... Born on May 16, 1958, Gitane Demone is best known for her contributions to the gloomy rock group Pompeii 99 which subsequently merged with cult death rock group Christian Death. Besides the obvious influences of punk and gothic rock, her vocal work is also inspired by jazz, particularly singer Billie Holiday. Her visual appearance was marked by bold presen-tations of S&M and fetish aesthetics, which also featured in her lyrics and music, e.g. on ›Demonix‹, a project she realised in collaboration with Mark Ickx of Dutch group A Split Second.

After her involvement in Christian Death, Gitane produced several solo works, including the albums ›Am I Wrong?‹ and ›Dream Home Heartache‹ (with former bandmate and Christian Death founder Rozz Williams), as well as collaborations with deathrockers Dreadful Shadows and experi-mental noise outfit +DOG+.

Her current group The Crystelles, in which she performs alongside her daughter Zara Kand, celebrates sinister rock‘n‘roll with a Southern edge, and her live performances demonstrate impressively that her rebellious spi-rit has not diminished and still inspires aficionados of alternative counter-culture to this very day.

›The Blood‹ is is her first book publication, a poetic yet surreal and partly grotesque narration illustrated by Gitane with unique artworks.

»I’ve been stringing words together, creating visual art & catching melodies since I was three years old – that’s about as far back as I can remember. Later, I prioritized music, encompassing lyric-writing, compostion & arrangement & live performace, with voice as my lead instrument.

I think I have a long way to go until I achieve the kind of Art I am after.«
